If using screws, the bunk beds will be easier to dismantle at a later date. This frame was made to suit the ceiling height and to fit a king single mattress inside, allowing a bit extra for bedding. I fixed the frames into the walls, floor and ceiling, making sure everything was level and plumb. 2Add joists (the horizontal structure) to build a platform for the mattress. I used a skillsaw and chisel to notch the joists into the upright framework for strength. Alternatively, you could butt them in flush and fit the joist hangers. I only needed one level of joists because I put an existing bed and trundler at the bottom, but if you require two or three levels, simply repeat this step. Don’t forget to consider factors such as head height, access and safety when designing multiple level bunks. 3Fit the platform for the bed. I used a 12mm sheet of MDF, but you could also use plywood. Fix this down to the joists using either short nails or screws. 4Measure and cut MDF to encase all the framing timber. Try and have all the smooth faces towards the front of the bunks and the cut edges towards the back. 5Before fixing the MDF to the framework, give everything a really good sand, then prime with Resene Quick Dry primer. I used Resene Indian Ink to paint two top coats.

6Fix the MDF to the framework. I used a finishing gun or bradder. I made sure I numbered the back of each piece when I measured and cut it so I would know where it would go back on. Fill nail holes with Resene EzyFill Quick. Lightly sand and paint one more top coat to finish it off. 7For the ladder, I used 40mm x 40mm dressed pine, notching in each of the rungs like the joists. The ladder was painted with Resene Colorwood in Resene Bark and fixed to the end of the bunks with four large screws. 8Provide privacy for your guests by adding curtains to create that enclosed feeling seen in old-style Scandinavian bunks. This look is cosy if you have multiple sets of bunks in one room. I hung the curtain rod on the inside of the framework and added corduroy curtains. 9Create a front for the trundler, it’s an optional step but great if the bed is unsightly. Cut the face/cover for the front face of the trundler bed. I used 18mm MDF and fixed a border on it, then repeated the sanding, priming and painting process as described in Step 5. 10Add handles, then drill four holes and use four bolts (as pictured) to fix the face piece to the metal frame. Tip Choose a waterborne enamel, such as Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen, for walls in high contact areas, such as this bunk bed. 6 This will make it easier to wipe them clean later. You can also apply Resene SpaceCote Clear for extra protection. 78 9 10 102 YOUR HOME AND GARDEN

Hit the Our electronics may make living easier, but they don’t necessarily make it easy on the eyes. right cord From plugs to chargers and cords, electronic clutter is taking over our homes at an alarming speed. How to hide messy Thankfully, new technology and a bit of DIY electronic clutter without innovation is helping to turn the tide on the sea of cables. “People do not want to see cords everywhere breaking the bank so we are getting clever at hiding them,” Julie Rees, lead designer at Sojo Design says. “As they vary in Text Caroline Moratti colours and lengths, they’re also tripping hazards.” Here’s how to avoid any accidents and save your space with a few quick and easy changes. Power planning If you’re about to undertake a renovation or new build, it’s best to plan ahead around what electronics you’ll need and where. Julie emphasises the importance of “spatial design and floor planning so we can determine where lamps or cords of any sort are discreet.” If you know where you’d want a certain lamp to go or your TV, make sure that a power point is close by to limit extension cords snaking around your space. Plan your furniture placement and work around accordingly; you’ll be thankful when you no longer have to use extension cords just to charge your phone at night. Power points built into floors are becoming a hot option, especially since they can be disguised by a recessed lid to preserve your floors. Importantly, they’re perfect for flexible living arrangements, such as using laptops around dining tables, and then packing away your work in time for dinner. COVER THOSE CABLES Cable covers are going to be your new best friend, trust us. Thread the cable inside these plastic tubes or wrap the cover around your cable, depending on what type you purchase, and away you go. These are perfect for running under rugs, or along wall skirting, especially if you get a colour that matches your walls. Cable covers help to reduce trip hazards as well as protect the cables themselves from foot traffic wear and tear. You can even get covers that can conceal several wires at once, helping to maintain a smooth and seamless appearance in your home. 2 1 104 YOUR HOME AND GARDEN

LIVING ROOM HACKS M This social area is never easy, especially because it’s MASTER OF DISGUISE If your a space open to the scrutiny of guests but cords can power point is in an inconvenient be conquered, even here. “On occasion, we need to get cords cut down for lamps so there is less excess position, clever furniture on floor,” Julie says. While it is possible to shorten positioning and attaching the a lamp cord in a DIY afternoon, it’s best to leave it power cord to an appliance such to an electrician for safety reasons and to avoid as a desk lamp up the back of possibly damaging your favourite piece. On the a table leg will minimise seeing flip side, cordless lamps have been growing in popularity overseas, with hopes they will soon an unsightly cable. reach our shores in a meaningful way. But if you have a lamp with a long cord, all hope is not lost. Sometimes the best way to deal with cables is to hide them in plain sight, all it involves is a bit of adhesive hook trickery. Small, transparent adhesive hooks can be purchased from hardware stores and attached along furniture lines, whether that’s to the back of a sofa or creeping down a coffee table leg. Run your cable through it until it subtly reaches the socket. This’ll elevate cords above tripping level while offering a discreet look overall. To really get the most out of this method, paint the cord or cord cover to match the colour of whatever furniture it runs down, tricking the eye using a camouflage effect. Make sure to paint match so that the cord or cord cover blends in. Leftover furniture fabric swatches can also be used to hide wires. 1 D-Line 1m black cable cover, $34.98, from 3 Bunnings. 2 Command cord clips small clear, $9.49, from Mitre 10. 3 Haven entertainment Box it up unit, $799, from Target. 4 Motley storage box, $179, from Freedom. 5 Onito basket, In our experience, the TV area is always hit hardest $109, from Freedom. by disorder. A rattan basket can work wonders here, simply thread cords through the basket handles and hide them inside. If you don’t have basket handles, simply cut an opening through the wicker. Inside the container, your wifi router can whir on undeterred, but outside paints a different picture. If 4 you don’t have a basket, even a painted shoebox will help contain any tripping hazards. On a smaller scale, a much sneakier version of this hack is to grab a sturdy hardback book and cut out a secret enclosure that can fit your phone to charge at night or to hide the modem in the lounge. Several small craft vendors also sell fake books if you don’t have the heart or skills to take scissors and craft knife 5 to your favourite classic. YOUR HOME AND GARDEN 105

Kitchen hacks We’d all love a butler’s pantry to be able to hide away the mess of domestic life, but if your kitchen doesn’t extend to that kind of luxury, Julie recommends hiding power points in drawers or on side surfaces as opposed to the back wall and obvious places. Pop-up power outlets built into your countertop are also a great option for discreet, aesthetic living. If you enjoy displaying your appliances, such as a stand mixer or blender, but don’t love the trail of cords that comes with them, then this hack is for you. Stick an adhesive hook on the back of the appliance, then wind up the cord and strap it on the hook. When in use, unravel to plug in. Avoid doing this for any appliance that heats up, such as a toaster, but otherwise it’s the perfect kitchen hack for a couple of dollars. You can also clear cords off your counter by propping up small appliances on purpose-built stands. Place coffee essentials or toast accessories around the area for ease of use, all the while knowing the cords are secretly stashed beneath. HIDE AND SEEK The best solution for keeping 15W honeycomb the cords of a wall-mounted TV out of sight is wireless charger hiding them behind the wall using recessed black, $39 from Kmart. cable plates. NO WIRE, NO WORRIES If you often find yourself charging your phone as you cook, Julie advises “introducing wireless charging surfaces in the kitchen” to help with clutter. Wireless charging can normally be conducted through any non-metallic benchtop, depending on thickness. Stick them on the underside of the overhang or the roof of a drawer so they’re concealed, then when you place a phone on top of your counter, you’ll be able to effortlessly charge, no wires needed. This hack will also work well with bedside tables or coffee tables, whenever you need a quick device charge during your day. Finally, if hiding your cords isn’t an option, lean into the exposed cable look. Think Brooklyn loft, with dangling wires and brushed metal pieces when it comes to interiors. Some rough-edged concrete accessories and Edison bulbs will add to the warehouse-chic look, perhaps brick wallpaper. It’s all about “faking it until you make it”. 106 YOUR HOME AND GARDEN

By doing this, they could stay within budget so long as they did the painting themselves. This also ensured there was money for a plumber, handyman and electrician because they “always prefer to use experts to help with the fiddly and dangerous bits”. What they did After cleaning the cabinetry with sugar soap and giving it a light sand, they painted it using Dulux Renovation Range paint in Mossa to transform it. They also changed the handles on the vanity to round clamshell knobs. Then, it was on to painting over the wall tiles and the bath surround. They painted the wall tiles a warm neutral to go with the flooring using Dulux Tiles & Benchtop paint in Buff It Half. The biggest spend was the three sets of quality tapware, switching the dated ones out for modern gold-coloured versions. They updated the mirror getting a cheapie and spray-painted the frame gold, added new lights and finishing touches such as a marble dish and fresh towels. The power of paint, they all agree, is powerful when it comes to refreshing a room.

M In the entrance Brighten a dark entrance and hallway with a mirror because the reflection will maximise any natural light and help the space look bigger than it actually is. Anchor the mirror by hanging it over a console or hall table and hang it around 1.5 metres from the ground so it can be used for those last-minute make-up checks as you fly out the door. Alternatively, hang multiple ones in varying sizes to create a gallery wall. In the bathroom Mirrors in bathrooms need to be built for purpose so you can apply your make-up and do your hair without being hindered by a steamed up, too small mirror. For that reason, some mirrors now have built-in touch-sensor LED lighting for soft illumination at night as well as a brighter option to help you wake up in the morning. Choose a mirror with anti-condensation technology to reduce fogging so it can be used directly after bathing. And, if you have double basins, then it would also pay to have twin mirrors as much for symmetry as the convenience of having your own mirror. Make sure to maximise any natural light you have, or use wall sconces on both sides of the mirror – something that will help with eyeliner application every time. It will pay to select moisture-resistant material for the mirror frames so veer away from wood here, unless you’re prepared to seal it. YOUR HOME AND GARDEN 113

If you haven’t embraced the circular mirror PHOTOGRAPHY ARE MEDIA SYNDICATION craze, you’re in the minority. While they’re still big news, the shape that’s really going places right now is the arched or oval mirror – it’s still an organic shape but just a nudge on. If you must go the square or rectangular route, rounded edges are a modern update on razor-sharp lines. Living room A generous mirror over the mantel is the most obvious place for one to hang as a decorative feature in a living space. The rule of thumb here is that it should be as wide as the mantel itself – or as close as you can get. Consider the position of any mirror that is not going over the mantel, it’s a perfect opportunity to fool the eye and visually expand the space while reflecting the beauty of the outside, not the neighbour’s roof.
