As I write, it is currently blowing a 30 knot nor easterly with a forecasted westerly gale for the following day. This means we will have to move anchorages in between breeze changes at around 4.30am. We could go into a marina, but provided there are other safe choices, we’d prefer to save our money. The constant movement and noise of a boat in a blow can be stressful and not conducive to a good night’s sleep. However, when it is calm, it is bliss. As for Delvy, she doesn’t have any of those concerns except maybe not park under a big tree in a storm, avoid hail and driving in inclement weather. EXERCISE Living on a sailing yacht is physically demanding — your body is always moving, and when it’s rough it can be exhausting. Boat ownership equals daily maintenance, there is always some job to do. There can be a lot of down time though, as there are fewer external distractions — we are basically marooned on our RZQLVODQGVR1HWÁL[ZLOOJHW a workout if we have internet connection. On land, it’s easy to step out and go for a walk, a bike ride or a wander to the shops (depending on where you are), but when on anchor any land activity has to be planned according to weather, tides and dinghy access (or ability to swim ashore!). We always plan an exploration activity like a beach or bush walk when we arrive at a new anchorage — that’s the fun of cruising, to discover new places. Sometimes we just noodle around in the dinghy, going up creeks and inlets. Whatever we do, the fresh sea air always aids a good night’s sleep, and as an added bonus also keeps hay fever away. – THE WANDERER JULY 2022 – 35
