Bright days meet the designer The Lucciola wall light Emily Jury, senior interior stylist and designer from Lights Lights at Nectaar, lives here with her husband, Mark, Lights is a simple newborn baby, Winona, and their dog, Ruffy. design that adds to the soft brightness. nectaar.com.au | @_nectaar INTERIOR DESIGNER AND NEW MUM Emily Jury always knew she’d return to the country with her husband, Mark. The pair had grown up in picturesque rural locations and Mark’s ultimate dream was to become a full-time farmer. Their opportunity to escape the city came in 2019 when they purchased a 7.2-hectare apple orchard on the outskirts of Castlemaine and, with SF Building Services, Craft Scale Joinery and Nectaar, began building a modern farmhouse. The timing couldn’t have been better, with the arrival of the family’s first child, Winona, in June 2022, a mere six months after the build was completed. Instead of leaning in to classic farmstead design, Emily wanted to achieve a modern look that allowed the stunning vistas to be the hero of the project. “The intention was to create something serene but raw and refined in terms of the textural elements,” says Emily. “The home is built at the high point of the property, surrounded by nature, so the materials palette had to be a balance of earthy and tactile.” Huge windows frame the open-plan kitchen and dining room with double curtains from Dollar Curtains + Blinds framing the views. @reallivingmag 128

advice As you like it keep it simple Sheer curtains diffuse the sunlight; blackout To maintain a sleek look, Emily avoided curtains on a separate overcomplicating the design elements. She let the natural materials applied track provide total throughout the home speak for themselves darkness as required. which makes the most of the simple yet stunning architecture. slowly does it Don’t rush into choosing a builder. You’ll be working closely with this person for many months so it’s worth taking the time to do your research, meet with potential candidates and view their completed projects. That way, you can feel confident and comfortable in your decision. window shopping If you want to make the most of your view, allow ample time in the planning stages to really hash out window placement and, further down the track, furniture positions. Try to incorporate large glazing where the focal point is for a window that will shine. Nature’s best The kitchen island, splashback and benchtops (opposite) in Taj Mahal quartzite from CDK Stone evoke rugged, natural quarries, while the waterfall edges of the island give a sense of movement. Layers of timber, from the Barnaby Lane dining chairs (above) to the Gus barstools from Jardan (opposite), add further interest for the senses. A skylight opens up the already bright living and dining space even more. A real living 129

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT Middle ground The vestibule serves an important purpose in this H-shaped build, connecting the living and dining zones to the bedrooms and bathrooms. Large windows, which allow an unobstructed view to the gorgeous greenery encircling the home, create cohesion and consistency between these two areas. Au naturel Timber veneer joinery, by Craft Scale Joinery, adds warmth to the soft, minimalist main bathroom while natural stone, from CDK Stone, introduces a touch of drama and flair. Lucciola wall light from Lights Lights Lights. Understated chic Inax ‘Sugie’ mosaic tiles from Artedomus create a clean, neutral base for the bathroom. The series makes use of Japanese cermanic craftmanship, resulting in tiles that are both high quality and low maintenance. Walls are by Melbourne Artisan. Get dirty On a working farm, a mudroom is a must. But Emily also wanted it to be durable, warm and functional, adding that storage was a high priority. The cabinetry, made from Laminex in Elegant Oak Natural, features flush pulls and built-in handles to create the desired seamless look. texture fix Don’t be afraid to mix up your textures and get experimental. If you want an earthy look then take inspiration from nature. Something as simple as the bark of a tree or leaves could spark a unique idea. minimalist dream Don’t go overboard when it comes to colour. If your aim is a contemporary, reserved aesthetic then you’ll need to stay focused with a minimalist colour palette. Look at the hues around you and draw tones from there. material world Decide on the key materials you want to incorporate. For Emily, inspiration came from the unique spiky silhouette of the Joshua tree, native to the south-west of the United States. Drawn to raw and tactile materials, she homed in on a few options to build up a base. R @reallivingmag 130

outside A Brisbane architect creates a unique greenhouse experience within his renovated Queenslander cottage Street appeal The form of this original gable-roofed worker’s cottage in the inner-Brisbane suburb of Highgate Hill has been preserved but is camouflaged in greenery. It sits on a topographically rich peninsula of the Brisbane River. The architecturally diverse streetscape, which runs along a ridge, offers glimpses down into the gullies that stretch across the hinterland. A real living 135

meet the designer Architect John Ellway is the designer and owner of this beautiful house, which he shares with his wife, Amber Winter. jellway.com | @jellway THE TERRARIUM HOUSE by John Ellway Architect is a striking reconfiguration of an existing cottage that is both respectful and inquiring. In rethinking the ‘raise and build under’ renovation strategy so often applied to Queenslander houses, the architect and owner has innovatively responded to the possibilities of the sloping topography of his site in Highgate Hill, Brisbane. The open undercroft of the cottage is occupied with shadowy and breezy living spaces, with the private bedroom spaces cocooned within the existing timber cottage. As John’s wife Amber Winter says, “It feels like you are living under the footpath, sheltered from the street, yet connected to it.” The treatment of the street frontage retains the form of the original gable-roofed cottage, but it has been camouflaged in the greenery of a dense vine. The verandah of the cottage has been removed, allowing light, air and access between levels via a covered outdoor stair. This space marks the threshold between the old cottage and the new, as well as the connecting point between the private and public spaces of the home. A benefit of living in a climate such as Brisbane’s is the way homes can be designed so inhabitants exist deeply in tune with the weather. “When it’s hot, we have the doors wide open to encourage air flow. You get a breeze by opening portions up,” Amber says. “When it’s cooler, it can be completely closed down to be cosy and warm.” R @reallivingmag 136

outside Old meets new A covered outdoor stair (opposite) marks the threshold between the old cottage and the new at Terrarium House, and connects to the open-air living area. Leafy outlook Frosted glass washes the living area in gentle daylight while ensuring the presence of greenery is always felt. The open-plan kitchen is a highly functional composition of custom cabinetry and cast concrete elements. A double-height volume rises over the dining table, filling the lower level with northern light. Artworks by unknown artists.
