FOR: The Enthusiastic Owners of Volume XXXIIl - Issue II JUNE 2020 1929 Buicks Everywhere Note: No Issues published in 2017 (Established 1987 - Into our 33rd year) DEAR FELLOW 1929 BUICK OWNERS Since it still has its original color and interior, I will try to maintain the Buick and make it ready to drive. I Wow ! What a different world we’re living in now vs. have already got a second engine from Granada in when I sent the last NEWSLETTER, on Jan. 4. Spain, as well as having some parts made. I hope that all the 29’er families are safe and haven’t Some parts are different, such as the headlights. It contracted Covid 19. It probably has had only one owner. continued to stay locked-down pending the end of this I'm currently looking for the missing parts or have pandemic. Now in our 6th week. Car meets are being them reproduced. Unfortunately, shipping from cancelled or postponed left and right. Who know when the USA is very expensive, so it is often we’ll be able to get back to normal and if the old normal cheaper to reproduce in Germany, so I plan will be the new normal. I’ve heard from many 29‘ers that they have been working on their cars during this stay at home period. It’s still a little to cold to be out in the garage in Canada at the moment. But soon ... The Cord’s transmission is ready in South Bend, IN but the Border is closed to non-essential goods. Hopefully, open soon. FEATURE 29 BUICK STORIES ARNDT WIEGANG (27) writes: “I have a 29-27 made in Germany. Buick has been sleeping. I bought an old truck from a friend. The truck was in a hall for 30 years. On the day of the pickup, I looked at my friend's vintage cars and saw a prewar car in a corner. In passing I said that I would like something like that too. Now it was about 2 years ago and I forgot the car when I got a phone call. My friend needed space for his company and asked me if I wanted the car. Since I still had space, I agreed and got a deal with him. It's a 1929 Buick 29-27 Four Door 5 Passengers Sedan The car stood in the corner for about 42 years and was bought from the former GDR. The vehicle was assembled in Berlin Borsigwald and sold in the city of Chemnitz. The owner was a factory owner who had previously driven a 1925 Buick Tourer. After that, only the son had the vehicle. Nobody could tell me why the engine was partially disassembled. It could be that the engine was disassembled during the war so that the car was not drafted into the military.

to repair the mechanics. Outside and inside, I hope to be able to keep the original condition. I will be happy to tell you what happens next when I have completed my other restoration projects.”

BENSON REPORT: Julian Griffiths updates us on IAN MacDONALD (27) writes: “Thought I would Benson. “I inherited Benson when my father in-law send some Pics of my 29-27 from February 2020 passed in October, last year. We have now have Benson and a few others.” Ian MacDonald’s 22-27 McLaughlin Buick

Sydney Harbour Bridge Sydney Opera House We visited Phil and Mary Green (49X) and saw his lovely restoration (story hopefully soon) and several of his other cars. John Lee (54CC) joined us for lunch on what is now a deserted Bondi Beach. Tony Bult’s shop in Mid January 2020 Phil’s car is a 29-49X, 7 passenger touring which has taken him at least 15 years to restore. I saw it, 29 BUICKS IN AUSTRALIA & NEW restoration underway, on my last trip there in ‘07. ZEALAND Marlene and I took off for our Australian and New Zealand adventure on Jan. 13 a little wary of the fires and volcanos that were burning and erupting. We landed in Melbourne’s lovely +35C temps. and could smell smoke but there were no fires to be seen from the center of the city. We met Canadian friends from Malaysia, attended the Australian Open tennis and had lunch with Bob Sheppard, who makes a number of reproduction parts for our 29’s, and his family. Bob Sheppard Phil Green’s just restored 29-49X From there we moved on to Sydney and stayed in a hotel overlooking the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera house.

Your Editor and Terry Cockerell and his 36 Cord Westchester under restoration Phil Green’s just restored 29-49X Marlene on Bondi Beach and Bill’s had a Haircut Ron & Bev Noonan drove us out to visit a Cord Peter and Margaret Cook, Pres. of the NWS Buick friend of mine, Terry Cockerell who owns a 36 Club led the way in his 26 Buick tourer to the Cord Westchester that he’s restoring. Australian Day (Jan. 21) rally at Camden Show ground, Camden, Australia. I drove with Colin Castle in his 29-44X. After the parade we all went back to Jim & Virginia Russell’s place for an Aussie BBQ. Who should turn up but John and Barbara Gerdtz (former 24X owner and Buick author). It was certainly nice to see them again.

Colin Castle’s 44X Joe Manzano’s 29-25X Under Restoration Then on to Brisbane and a lunch that they threw for Marlene and me. Martin Jansen, Vaughn & Lynn Gunthorpe, Adrian Dearling, Dave Wilson, Dot & Stewart Talbot and Colin Hinksman. All people I’d met either on my ’07 or ’14 trips to Australia. Margaret Cook and Marlene in a 1926 Buick Then on to the Gold Coast where we had lunch with Joe and Ana Maria Manzano (25X) who had just moved his family and car there. Your Editor and Joe Manzano (25X) Bill & Vaughn Gunthorpe (44X)

Martin Jansen’s Hopped-Up Engine on his 44X Dave Wilson (ex 25X - Benson Owner prior to Tim Wilkinson taking in its first Peking-to-Paris) and Bill Bill & Martin Jansen(44X) Glenn Smith who, along with his wife Rosemary, run Vintage and Classic Reproductions, who make parts for our 29’s and your Editor We also had a lovely dinner on Brisbane’s River Front with Graham and Susan Porter (54CCX). Here they are, dressed to the nines, in their Melbourne Cup finery.
