STEVE MOSHER Ethical Problems in Doing Business with China Americans hoped that China’s opening to the West would lead to the peaceful evolution of that country into a free market democracy that would respect the human rights of its own people and become a responsible member of the international community. Instead, as China has become more powerful, the ruling communist party has become more tyrannical at home and more aggressive abroad. Is it still ethically permissible to do business in or with China. Should the U.S. policy be one of complete economic decoupling? Steven W. Mosher is an internationally recognized authority on China. While completing his Ph.D. degree at Stanford University, he was selected to be the first American social scientist allowed to conduct on the ground research in the PRC since the Communist Revolution. He has authored a number of books on China, including Bully of Asia: Why China’s Dream is the New Threat to World Order. TIMOTHY NIELSEN Venture Fidelis: Building a New Catholic Business Ecosystem that Merges Success with Sanctification An increasingly secularized society is making it more and more difficult for Catholics to live a fully integrated life where their faith shapes all of their choices, even within the realm of business. Recent court battles over Catholic moral issues of employer-funded contraception, sterilization, and abortion serve as examples of how a secularizing culture inhibits business leaders seeking to live vocations in accord with their Christian principles. One way that Catholics can work to counter this is through the creation of a new class of American business with a distinctive Catholic identity that is clearly defined, explicitly stated, and legally expressed. Such a movement will provide much needed legal protection for Catholic businesses, help entrepreneurs stay true to their faith, and also serve as a means to form a systematic network of support for Catholic businesses across the nation. Timothy (T.J.) Nielsen, Executive Director and co-founder of the CEC, holds a BA in history from Hillsdale College and an MA in Theology from Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, Connecticut. T.J., who grew up in Arizona, moved to Upstate South Carolina to attend graduate school at Clemson University and then taught history and theology for five years in Catholic schools in Greenville. In July 2013 he became the Pastoral Associate at St. Mary’s Church in Greenville, South Carolina, where he and his wife, Alycia, live with their five children. T.J. is a lay member of the Dominican Order and in 2014 he co-founded the CEC, and now serves as Executive Director. In 2017, T.J. launched Venture Fidelis as an initiative of the CEC to help Catholics better live out their faith in the workplace. STEVE RAY St. Peter: The Businessman LIVE: Thursday, October 8, 12:15pm EDT I will introduce a Peter that people have never met before; not the bumbling denier, but the astute businessman, important civic leader and charismatic CEO. In 1975, Stephen started his own business with a $5 investment and homemade business cards. His building services company, Distinctive Maintenance, grew to over 600 employees at its height. Prior to 1994, neither Steve or his wife Janet had ever set foot in a Catholic Church. After studying many books to convince their best friend and recent convert, Al Kresta, that the early church was evangelical, Steve and Janet backed their way right into the Catholic Church. On Pentecost Sunday, 1994, they entered the Church at Christ the King Parish in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Steve began writing a letter to his father explaining why they became Catholic. This letter soon became the book Crossing the Tiber: Evangelical Protestants Discover the Historic Church, published by Ignatius Press. Since then, Steve’s passion for the depth of truth found within the Catholic tradition has led him to walk away from his business and pursue what he really loves—writing, speaking, producing Catholic films, and leading pilgrimages to biblical lands. Steve is a regular guest on Catholic radio and TV including Catholic Answers, Ave Maria Radio, Relevant Radio, and EWTN. He also writes Bible studies for Catholic Scripture Study International. KEVIN WELLS The Miracle of the Holy Priest and Heroism Today Kevin will discuss his near-death experience, subsequent hospital room miracle seen by eyewitnesses, and what led to his writing The Priests We Need to Save the Church. He’ll share his difficulties with Catholic publishers rejecting his book that called for priestly heroism and a willingness to die for his flock. Deemed too judgmental, each publisher rejected it - then McCarrick broke the dam of scandal, and the publishers started to call back. Kevin Wells is a former Major League Baseball writer, award-winning journalist, and author of the best-selling book The Priests We Need to Save the Church. Since its 2019 release, it has been read by many hundreds of priests throughout the world and been disseminated in seminaries throughout the country. It has been endorsed by strong American bishops, including His Excellency Bishop Strickland, who purchased Kevin’s book for each priest in his Tyler, Texas, Diocese. Kevin is a freelance writer and an active evangelist who speaks on various Catholic topics. His One 2 One podcast focuses on the heroism of strong Catholic priests and laity. He is the Director of Public Relations for World Villages for Children and is currently writing the biography of Venerable Aloysius Schwartz. He is president of the Monsignor Thomas Wells Society for Vocations, which financially and prayerfully commits itself to the promotion of strong priests and seminarians and to the practice of the fullness of the Catholic Faith. Kevin’s work with youth earned him the James Cardinal Hickey National Figure Award from the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. Kevin lives in Millersville, Maryland with his wife and three children.
