When he was installed in May as bishop of the Diocese of Columbus, OH, Bishop Earl Fernandes knew he had stepped outside the brotherhood of priests who had always supported him as a pastor. “When you’re a priest, you can hang out with your brother priests, but when you’re a bishop . . . In one previous position as a seminary dean, for example, he juggled several jobs both in and outside the seminary. “I like work. I can do work,” he said, but he also knows how to delegate. “I like to know what is happening, but I don’t necessarily like to micromanage everything or do everything myself, though I like to be informed. Joe and Lori Hamrock As important as attitude and approach are in handling top-level jobs, both Bishop Fernandes and Hamrock consider their Catholic faith as key to managing their duties well. Bishop Fernandes said maintaining a life of prayer — which includes a daily practice of a Holy Hour, the Rosary, and the Divine Office — is essential for him. He also has a strong devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, St. Francis de Sales, St. John Vianney, St. Alphonsus Liguori, St. Ignatius Loyola, and St. Thérèse of Lisieux, his family’s patron. Hamrock said he has often recited the prayer, “Come, Holy Spirit” in key and mundane moments to stay close to Christ. But he said a structured spiritual life with his wife that includes prayer, daily Mass, the rosary, weekly adoration, and monthly Confession also has grounded him. Finally, he said, Legatus has been a significant source of support. Participating in the meetings of the Columbus Chapter and national conferences, he said, provided him and his wife with fellowship and the recognition that they are part of a strong community. A member during most of his time as a CEO, Hamrock said, “[Legatus] helps build confidence and clarity.” L JUDY ROBERTS is a contributing writer for Legatus magazine. 14February 2023 | | legatus.org
On being ‘spiritual entrepreneurs’ Not surprisingly, both Joe Hamrock and Bishop Earl Fernandes consider the Catholic faith a “best practice” for success in business or other endeavors. Hamrock’s advice to those who aspire to top-level positions is to make time for the deeper exploration of the faith. “The faith is so rich in giving you the tools to navigate the challenges you see. When you don’t have it, you can be wandering around aimlessly and bumping into things,” he said. “It doesn’t mean you have to lead in an evangelical way. It’s how you internalize the faith and make it core to who you are and how you lead. Lead with the virtues as a guide. My Catholic faith guides me, but it’s different than reciting Scripture at a meeting.” Bishop Fernandes concurred. He likes the term “spiritual entrepreneurs” to describe those who lead in this way. “Spiritual entrepreneurs are virtuous individuals,” he said, adding that “people want to work for men and women of integrity who demonstrate faith, hope, and charity and even temperance, justice and fortitude.” The bishop said Pope Benedict XVI expanded on this idea in his 2009 encyclical, Caritas in Veritate, in which he wrote, “Development is impossible without upright men and women, without financiers and politicians whose consciences are finely attuned to the requirements of the common good. Both professional competence and moral consistency are necessary.” ISTOCKPHOTO.COM/PROSTOCK-STUDIO 15February 2023 | | legatus.org

Venerable entrepreneur was a ‘cooperative’ man Spain’s Fr. Jose‘ Maria Arizmendiarrieta built a legacy of businesses and schools based on worker-ownership and faithful to Catholic social teaching February 2023 | Venerable José Maria Arizmendiarrieta is unfamiliar to most Catholics in the United States as a saintly intercessor, even more so as a business advisor. But the story of this Basque priest’s life is inspiring, and his work continues to impact the world today. In a small Spanish town in the 1940s, Fr. Arizmendiarrieta planted the seed that would eventually grow into the multinational Mondragon Corporation, an association of cooperative businesses based on principles from Catholic social teaching. Across industries as diverse as retail, finance, and engineering, the Mondragon cooperatives show that a person-first and community-focused approach to business is not only good for persons and communities, it’s also good for business. by Rachel Hoover 17 | legatus.org
Who was Fr. Arizmendiarrieta? Arizmendiarrieta—sometimes called “Arizmendi” for short—was born in 1915 and grew up in a modest farmhouse in the province of Biscay on the central northern coast of Spain. In due time, he entered the seminary at Vitoria, but his studies were interrupted in 1936 by the Spanish Civil War. Arizmendiarrieta was mobilized by the Basque government but deemed unfit for combat because he had lost an eye in a childhood accident. Instead, he was made editor of a government-run, Basque- language newspaper. This work led to his arrest by Nationalist rebel leader Ferdinand Franco’s army in 1937, when he narrowly escaped being shot. After being mobilized again by Franco’s Fr. José María Arizmendiarrieta army, Arizmendi was allowed to continue his seminary studies.
