WHEN THE FAMILY BUSINESS IS A LEGACY For these Legatus members, operating the family business means continuing a proud tradition handed down from generations past — and doing so with the guiding principles and values they have inherited BY MAURA KELLER The family business has long been a staple in the American economy. According to Score, a nonprofit organization and resource partner of the Small Business Administration, 19 percent of the 28.8 million small businesses in America are family owned. Ranging in size from small “mom and pop” shops to Fortune 500 entities, family businesses generate about 64 percent of the country’s gross domestic product and 78 percent of all new jobs. And a whopping 74 percent of family- owned firms report stronger values and culture. Legatus members are at the helm of some of these companies – incorporating their Catholic faith and values to lead these successful enterprises into the future. And some have been handed down within the family for generations going back more than a century. 11August 2023 | | legatus.org

Oh, down in Mexico Forty-five Legatus members, staff, and guests traveled to Mexico June 9-12 for the Legatus Family Pilgrimage, which featured 3 visits to the three historic churches of Mexico City as well as to the Girlstown residential school in nearby Chalco. Pilgrims toured the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary; the Church of Santiago Tlatelolco, where St. Juan Diego was baptized; and the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe with its miraculous tilma bearing Mary’s image from her appearance in 1531. As always on Legatus pilgrimages, there was plenty of time for prayer, fine food, and fellowship. Here are just a few images from this year’s excursion. 1 2 1) Legatus pilgrims arrive for their tour outside the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City. 2) In the crypt of the 6 magnificent cathedral, pilgrims visit a cenotaph (monument) of Juan de Zumárraga, the first archbishop of Mexico, who was known to protect the native peoples against the abuses of their Spanish overlords. 3) Legatus pilgrims pause for a group photo outside the Church of Santiago Tlatelolco.
