KWA 2019 Yarl Devi Run an Unforgettable Experience ‘Yarl Devi’, a popular express train, runs between Colombo and Jaffna from the fifties of the last century, except for about 25 years during the civil unrest in the country. Kondavil railway station is one of the main stopping points where this train stops to pick up passengers who travel to Colombo and drop passengers who come from Colombo. Those days the lives of those people hail from Kondavil were so attached to this train as they can even tell the time of the day when they hear the whistle of this train from a far distance. Why I am talking about this popular train here? Well, it’s an interesting story! In July this year, a 5-kilometre fund-raising charity run was organised by Kondavil Welfare Association of South London in Dulwich Park. It was named after the popular train 'Yarl Devi'. According to the organisers, all the proceeds from the fund-raising event is spent on various projects in the war affected Vanni District in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. It is spent mainly on building sanitary facilities for disabled men and women, helping women who were affected by the war to rebuild their lives. This event has been organised for the last few years, but this was the first time I was able to participate. It was indeed a privilage for me to take part in this charity run along with my wife and two of my three children making it a memorable event in my life. The great thing about this event was the participation of various age groups including some children who must be only 7 or 8 years old and some seniors in their seventies. I was thrilled that I was able to complete the run holding my breath and covering some stretches by fast walking even though I didn’t have much practice during the run up to the event. About fifty people most of whom hailed from Kondavil took part in the run and I can’t believe how quickly the 5 KM was completed. The day concluded with an excellent BBQ party, again all the food and drinks were sponsored by the participant’s families themselves. The children who took part in the event were all honoured with certificates of appreciation and medals encouraging them to keep up their good work. Even though I didn’t get a certificate, I came home with the feeling that I did something that was full of fun, helping for a good cause and after all, gained some much- wanted fitness too. KWA 2019 Our Appamma - Puvaneswary Tharmalingam Our Appamma, Puvaneswary Tharmalingam, was like no other woman. If we could be half the incredible person that she was, then that would be one of our greatest achievements. She was a caring, beautiful soul and always put the welfare of others first. Anyone that was under her wing was taken care of and let me tell you, there was no escape from eating when Appamma was around. She always had the best interest of others at heart and taught us how to be selfless and virtuous in everything that we do. Appamma wasn’t just a mother to her children, but a mother to all of us too. Having 8 children, 17 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren meant that she knew the value of family and any guests that came over, she treated like family, which taught us that her compassion had no limits. Even at her age she travelled all across the world by herself to be with and support her family and so we think it’s needless to say that she was a very headstrong woman. We could list endless qualities that we admire about Appamma, but we thought we would take this opportunity to share some of the valuable lessons she had taught us. Appamma’s courage and determination is a quality we all wish to have, and in her style, even if that means pushing your way through a crowd to get what you want. She was an inspirational woman, with many strengths; and despite having raised 8 lovely children, she remained strong and independent, looking after herself and all of us. More importantly, she has showed us that age is just a number and that we should never let anyone tell us that we can’t do something. We have shared so many incredible memories together. Our beach trips were always full of laughter and joy and something which we will always cherish is last year when Appamma was willing to come into the water and splash around with us. Every year, we look forward to our Wales trip and no matter how she was feeling, Appamma always took the effort to join us on this special journey. Kondavil will always have a special place in her heart because no matter what, she always made sure to be at our Thiruvazha every year. So Appamma, we just want to say thank you for all the amazing memories and that we will always be thinking of you in everything that we do. We will miss your hugs and kisses that were always filled with love and your unforgettable smile which lit up every room you were in. Please watch over us and guide us through our journeys in life and we promise to make you proud. You will be missed dearly, but your kind spirit will live on forever in this world. In 2019, with your help, we setup a new Tuition Centre for 69 students from three different schools across Mankulam Mrs M. Nivedita area – communities severely affected by the war. Funds raised during the 2018 Yarl Devi Run event enabled us to provide tuition lessons in three subjects to Mr S. Selvanesan year 9 – 11 students (~Rs 400,000/~£2000 per year). Uthayakumaran students from financially-challenged backgrounds. This ongoing project offers 25 students access to after-school tuition classes to improve their academic Vice President: progress (~Rs 480,000/~£2400 per year). Mr E. Umakkanthan With your kind donations, we were also able to contribute ~Rs 750,000/~£3500 Secretary: towards the Thirumarai Mandapam Project in Kondavil. A multi-purpose hall was Miss S. Abirami built to predominantly provide educational support; and is currently shared by Sri Ganesha Nursery during the day and Aaranery School in the evenings. Assistant Secretary: Miss A. Ainjita We’re excited to have introduced several new projects this year, while also working hard to develop existing projects, such as the Sri Ganesha Library. In Treasurer: the last year, we gave financial aid to the library which was used to purchase Mr. R. Ahileswaran necessary furniture, including a television for Sri Ganesha nursery (Rs 190,000/~£850). Furthermore, we’ve been involved in building the Sri Ganesha Assistant Treasurer: Children Park. A donation of Rs 315,000 (~£1500) was put towards the Mr S. Srisankar development of a park for children, which was officially opened by MP E. Saravanapavan on 29th September 2019. Charity Development Coordinator: These projects exemplify what we can achieve when people work together, Mr A. Ragavan overcome differences, and offer a small act of kindness. Thanks to you, we provide communities with a sense of hope and enable them to recover, learn and Rehabilitation Project thrive.
