It is wonderful to Secretary: welcome you all this evening when it is not cold but just a Miss S Abirami little bit damp. I hope you have all enjoyed our youngsters’ Assistant Secretary: performances in this cultural event. Miss A Ainjita I would like to extend a warm welcome to our Chief Guest Treasurer: Cllr Paul Sathianesan who has served as Newham’s Mr M Uthayakumaran Borough Councillor for the last 25 years. Cllr Sathianesan Assistant Treasurer: has been serving our community in London for the last Mr. E Sivakanthan 31years. He is a well-known Tamil Diaspora in the UK with his passion and extensive support towards our community, Co –Ordinater: Mr A Ragavan KWA would like to extend our gratitude to him tonight. General Members: For the last 19 years KWA has been continually committed to helping our community back home. Our organisation has delivered many prosperous projects, some of which include Mr S Srisankar supporting the former school, now a college (Kondavil Hindu College), temple and the Mr R Ahileswaran library. This year our organisation delivered six disability access toilets in the Vanni region in Puthukkudiyiruppu. This is the first of our projects to have been delivered outside of Mr S Senthuran Kondavil in which we aimed to help the more vulnerable who were affected during the Mr K Jivithkumar war. Our special thanks to Mr Elanganathapillai Sivakanthan, our committee member who visited Puthukkudiyiruppu and met the project delivery team to hand over the facilities to the community. KWA will achieve a milestone next year in celebrating our 20th Anniversary. Our younger members have already started to organise fund raising events, such as a 5K Run for Education which will help school children in the Vanni region. KWA also wants to ask all of our members’ families and friends and KWA well-wishers to participate towards this fund raising event. Our annual sports meet and beach trips were also a success this year, and I would like to take this opportunity to invite everyone and their families to these events next year. For the last two years, I have had the privilege of working alongside my esteemed committee members who are consistently working with passion to promote our charity organisation. Only with their knowledge, specialised abilities and complete dedication are we able to successfully celebrate our 19th Get Together today. I want to thank the members, trustees and the former Presidents who all gave me the opportunity to lead such an incredible group of people. KWA 2016 Chief Guest Message to Secretary… Dear Abiramy Selvalingam, It’s an honour for me to bring Greetings and Best Wishes from Newham Council and European Tamils to Kondavil Welfare Association’s Annual Get-Together 2016. I am proud and humble to be here tonight with many of my good friends and people of Kondavil. Your village is one of the best fertile lands in Jaffna. You grow many vegetables and your very special crop is “Poilai” = Pukaiyilai = Tobacco leaves. You make a very special “Koda” out of the Stems of the Tobacco leaves to moisture the Cigars making a long lasting kick out of that Cigar when you smoke. You created a very wealthy Cigar making cottage industry where not only your own people but from neighbouring village people including Urumpirai had a job opportunity. I know now you are a registered charity in UK. The help you provided earlier now formalised under the Charity bringing all Kondavil people and well-wishers under one umbrella. I have seen you have helped and supported many projects and activities in Kondavil specially to the children in schools. This charity will help to bring all Kondavil people around the world together to support all the projects and initiatives in Kondavil for the children and young people. I am proud you have helped out side your village building six new toilets in Puthukudiyiruppu. Thank you. Kondavil had the railway station we used to come and get our Yarl Devi in early 80’s when we were children. Political resistance also started by burning a train at Kondavil station. This incident stopped the train service between Jaffna and KKS. You had great people in your village with many talents, skills, knowledge experience, hard working who are dedicated passionate individuals becoming famers, teachers, civil servants and musicians (Nathaswaram & Thavil) our cultural heritage. Your village is our neighbouring village we both share many things in life. So many boys and girls came to study at Saivathamil Vidiyasalai and Hindu College some studied with me and my brothers. Many are my mum’s students. nd Today I am proud to see that the 2 generation getting to know more about their ancestors and Kondavil, connecting them to Kondavil and being part of this celebrations. You have many temples, musicians and traditional melam. We did enjoy the awesome music of Gana Moorthy & Pancha Moorthy brothers. nd Today your special event for the benefit of the 2 generation is important and warmly welcomed by the community. Your hospitality and warm welcome is really appreciated with Kondavil Identity. Today many children took part in this cultural event. I don’t have any doubt that these children will carry their parents’ identity and heritage. I have to tell you a very special thing I recently discovered that my grand mother’s father is from Kondavil. When my grandmother and her brother both become Christians as a result of the intermarriage we lost that Kondavil family connection. I hope I will manage to trace them soon to celebrate our family connections. KWA 2016 Marathon Kids: Kids Who Inspire! Vibirthra Ahileswaran and Marthesh Ahileswaran has been participating in Junior Marathons for the past 4 years. Vibirtha was 8 and Marthesh was 12 years old when they ran their first Junior Marathon. Together with their dad Rasalingam Ahileswaran, they have raised more than £5000 for KWA and they have no plans to rest on their laurels. th Vibithra is running her Junior Great Run Birmingham on October 16 this year, at the Birmingham City Centre. The money they have raised so far (~SL Rs. 800,000) has been deposited in a fixed deposit account in Sri Lanka which is managed by “Nambikai Nithiyam” and the interest is being used to improve the education of children in Kondavil Hindu College. We continue to economically support 17 displaced Vice President: students and 2 local students from poorer backgrounds, through our IDP Mr S Selvanesan project, at a cost of Rs. 100,000 per year. Going forward we are hoping to Secretary: help more young students with their food, stationeries, clothes and Miss S Abirami medical care. Assistant Secretary: Miss A Ainjita Meanwhile, Kondavil Hindu College continues to receive support from us Treasurer: in developing education standards and school facilities. In addition, as of Mr M Uthayakumaran August we have implemented a new project facilitating the provision of Assistant Treasurer: tuition lessons for Year 10 students covering Maths, English and Science Mr. E Sivakanthan – for the entire year.
