CHRYSALIS INTERVENTIONS Bringing the light of recovery to the darkness of addiction Addiction Intervention & Consulting www.chrysalisinterventions.com

Chrysalis Interventions 2 ADDICTION BY THE NUMBERS 25 million Americans suffer from addiction 23 million more are in long-term recovery from addiction About 12% of American adults suffer from addiction to drugs or alcohol. This does not count “process addictions” such as shopping, pornography, gambling, work, etc. Each addict directly affects 6-8 other people. Nearly everyone has a family member or close friend struggling with addiction. 77% of people in a survey at a well-known facility said they entered treatment because someone they loved asked them to. 85% of addicts and alcoholics enter treatment when approached by family and friends with love, concern, and a reasonable plan.

Chrysalis Interventions 3 For more than four decades, Dr. Ellis has stepped into the chaos of people’s lives to bring direction and peace. Through addiction, he entered his own darkness. His recovery began in 2013 when someone said, “We need to get you well.” ABOUT DR. TERRY ELLIS Dr. Terry Ellis holds a doctorate in Greek, a Master of Divinity in Biblical Studies, and a B.A. in Psychology. He taught Greek and New Testament in seminary, pastored six churches in 34 years, authored numerous commentaries and articles on biblical and spiritual topics, and led the life of a busy and successful pastor. And he nearly lost his life to alcoholism. After treatment, he returned to the pastorate but soon felt led to devote his life to helping alcoholics/addicts and their families. He founded Chrysalis Interventions and is now a professional, certified interventionist. He speaks widely at conventions, universities, churches, and civic organizations on the topics of addiction, intervention, and recovery. Dr. Ellis now shares his story openly in hope of pulling back the curtain of shame and silence surrounding addiction. His goal is to help people and their families escape the shadows of addiction, and help a wider audience understand the disease of addiction, the positive power of intervention, and the hope of recovery. When approached with love, concern, and a reasonable plan 85% of patients enter treatment.

Chrysalis Interventions 4 WHAT IS AN INTERVENTION? The goal is to pull back the curtain of shame and silence surrounding addiction. The success of an intervention begins long before I meet with the person of concern. I want to harness the inherent strength of the family and friends and lead with love in talking with the patient. We approach the patient with respect and each team member expresses love, concern, and the offer of a reasonable plan of recovery. The steps usually include the following: • Assessment – This begins with the initial • Anticipating objections – We list the most phone call to gain an understanding of likely objections the patient will raise the person of concern, the background, to entering treatment, and formulate a behaviors, and family history. response to each. • Assembling the team – I help the family form • Make travel arrangements – We want to a team of 2-8 persons that I train to talk to get the person of concern to the treatment the person of concern. facility as soon as possible after he or she agrees to go. • Selecting treatment options – I provide 2-3 recommendations that fit the specific needs • The Intervention – I lead the intervention of the patient. with all other team members following my lead. • Writing letters – These are key to the intervention and I provide guidelines to • Transport to the facility – I travel with the writing letters that express love, concern, person of concern; having someone that hope, and consequences. “has been there” makes a huge difference. • Follow-up with the family – They need recovery too. Chrysalis Interventions 5 5 COMMON MISTA K ES FA MILY ME MBE RS M A K E Intervention is a proven method of helping people step out of the shadows of addiction. Initiating an intervention can be very intimidating. When families hesitate, they usually are making one or more of the following common mistakes: 1 “We’re letting go.” I prefer the word detach, as in the family detaches from the behavior of the addiction. Detaching is a good and necessary step for families to take, but only when every reasonable intervention technique is exhausted should we let someone free-fall. 2 Approaching the addict one-on-one. This usually takes the form of, “Her husband talked to her and she threw a fit!” Several individual family members may have tried to get the addict to change, but one-on-one the addict always wins. He knows how to push the buttons of family members and deny, divert, divide, and debate. 3 “We’re afraid of making things worse.” Often family members fear the addict’s anger or threats, and thus do nothing. It’s a recipe for inertia, and the addiction wins. We never conquer anger with more anger, and we never conquer anger by doing nothing. Love conquers all things. 4 “She’s already said no.” The addiction is telling her to say no. Ask yourself, “What would it take to get her to say yes?” The collective love and will of a team of caring people creates a powerful psychological and spiritual dynamic. Addiction owns her brain, so team members must appeal to the heart of the addict in a planned, united, and reasonable manner. 5 Underestimating the seriousness of the disease. Family members want to believe their loved one when he says “I’ve learned my lesson. I won't do that again!” In this case, the addict and family members are underestimating the power of addiction, which makes otherwise intelligent people do extraordinarily dangerous things.

Chrysalis Interventions 6 MYTHS The 7 Big Myths that Keep People in the Darkness Myth #1: The alcoholic must hit bottom first before help is effective. Truth: This myth is dangerous, for what constitutes “the bottom\"? An intervention \"raises the bottom.\" Your loved-one does not have to fall any further. Myth #2: The alcoholic has to want to get better before treatment will be effective. Truth: Seldom does an alcoholic wake up one morning and want to go to treatment. We ask a different question: What would it take for them to become willing to enter treatment? The answer is: The inherent strength of the family and friends expressed through a loving and careful intervention. Myth #3: Bad things don't happen every time he or she drinks, so maybe I'm overreacting. Truth: Obviously, some consequences have become alarmingly bad for anyone to consider intervention. Don’t overlook the heartbreaking episodes and vainly hope that things will get better based on a few good days. An intervention is a caring way to interrupt the spiraling cycle. Myth #4: Alcoholism is simply a matter of willpower. Truth: Addiction affects the brain and catastrophically compromises a person’s ability to think clearly when it comes to alcohol or drugs. Then, the bad decisions begin to spread out into every other area of life. Intervention begins the healing of the brain and the restoring of the soul. Myth #5: I just need to let go. Truth: Perhaps. But don’t “let go” until you’ve tried an approach which is compassionate, reasonable, and offers an excellent chance at success. Myth #6: We can't afford for him/her to enter treatment! Truth: The costs of addiction are piling up at an alarming rate. I can help you find a good treatment option even for Medicaid patients. Myth #7: A change of ______ is all that is needed. Truth: Your addicted loved one will not recover if they simply get a new job, new relationship, new school, new state, etc. You can put the problem in a lot of different settings, but it will still be the same old problem. Your loved one needs healing.

Chrysalis Interventions 7 MISSION To bring the light of recovery to individuals and families suffering from the darkness of addiction. VISION: Through education, guidance, and intervention, Chrysalis Interventions provides individuals and families a way out of addiction and into recovery. CORE CONVICTIONS • Addiction is one of the leading indicators of the spiritual crisis in our culture. • At the core of all addictions, lies a spiritual void. • Addiction tragically impacts every aspect of life: spiritual, physical, emotional, volitional, and social. • Anyone can recover. • Intervention is a spiritual negotiation. • An intervention can and should be a positive experience for every member of the intervention team. • Anywhere I can pull back the curtain of shame and silence surrounding addiction, people will recover. • Though hundreds of people have recovered from addiction during the first six years of Chrysalis Interventions – we can expand this work. THE SPEAKING MINISTRY OF CHRYSALIS INTERVENTIONS I have spoken in scores of venues about addiction, intervention, and recovery. Churches provide the richest opportunities to help people in addiction. The alcoholic or addict is not usually attending Sunday morning services, but their families are. This outreach is most effective when the lead pastor invites me to preach during the morning worship services. I weave my story into a biblically based message that will help all in attendance. During the afternoon, I’m available to speak privately with anyone who has questions and concerns about a loved one. Finally, I offer a one-hour seminar that covers the neurological impact of addiction and how people recover. In churches, I especially emphasize that faith is no guarantee against addiction, but it is a powerful element in recovery.

Addicted family members need treatment, not more of our trust. CHRYSALIS INTERVENTIONS Addiction Intervention & Consulting www.chrysalisinterventions.com (225) 405-0797
