This is due to a This is especially true for today’s turf managers. Caring for number of factors: local parks, green spaces and sports fields is an essential • PGRs encourage the stomates (pores) of a plant to close service, but it also creates a carbon footprint and uses up a substantial amount of resources. This suppresses the plant’s vertical growth while allowing normal processes like photosynthesis and respiration to continue. Energy is diverted into the plant’s lateral growth, resulting in smaller and finer leaves, increased tillering, and a larger, deeper root mass. The turf becomes denser with a more vibrant colour the public can enjoy. This denser turf allows for improved turf quality and improved durability. The deeper root system also improved the turfs utilisation of water. As importantly though, turf treated with Primo Maxx has an improved aesthetic that will be noticed by the community. Proactive management can improve sports field durability and one application of BARRICADE and ACELEPRYN provides season-long control from pests and weeds. In addition using a turf growth regulator like PRIMO MAXX will give you greener, denser and more resilient green spaces. PRIMO MAXX lowers mowing frequency which cuts down on maintenance, traffic management costs and WHS. The turf on your sports fields and ovals will also have stronger root systems, making them better equipped to stand up to wear and tear. Member Profile Ian Clark Saint Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School Your Job Position/Title Head Groundsman at Saint Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School in Karrinyup, Perth, WA. How long have you been at Saint Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School 24 years How many staff work with/ for you? Normally I have 3 Employed by the school, and 3 contract employees. Plus, a contract turf mower. Best aspect of your job? The variety of things we deal with, you never know what to expect on any given day. You certainly don’t get bored. Your worst day at work? Probably doing retic repair under the 40-year-old Plane Trees in the entry. There is about 400mm of solid root mass to cut through before getting to the larger structural roots below, to then dig down to the main line. It’s all done by hand because there is a boardwalk over the top which prevents even getting a full-blooded swing with an axe. Actually, that isn’t my worst day at work because it took me nearly a bloody week. Best day at work? I think a perfect Autumn day when I need to go out and re – mark the lines on the fields, listening to a bit of music and not being interrupted by phone calls. Bliss Why this career? I started out greenkeeping in Bowling Clubs over 40 years ago when I was based on the NSW mid North Coast. I then branched into Landscaping and Horticulture when I moved to Sydney in the ‘90s where I completed a 4year Ass. Diploma course. We made the move West in ’95 and after a couple of different positions the job came up at St. Mary’s. It has proven to be a culmination of all the learning and skills I’ve acquired to date and then some. When I took the job, I had no idea that I’d still be here 24 years later, and the nature of the job is that there is always more to come. We are in the middle of another wave of expansion and development that will probably keep me fully engrossed until my replacement takes over. 77 Turf Grass Times - Issue 49
Turf Grass Times - Issue 49 Who do you admire in the Turf Industry and why? I couldn’t pick one person for this. Anyone who achieves a good quality turf surface, in whatever discipline, has my admiration and respect. When I see the high standard of golf courses that seems to be the norm, when I look around the private school sector and see the excellent presentation of the playing fields and passive lawn areas that are a consistent theme, and when I see the municipal recreation areas, and in particular, Kings Park, I know the work and dedication required to produce these areas year in, year out and admire the professionals who achieve these results and it makes me proud to be involved in an industry that has lifted the bar during my time to the level it now is. Who inspires you in life? Ordinary people who do extraordinary things are a source of inspiration for me. I’m not talking about people who make huge amounts of money, I mean people who take hold of life and milk it to the last drop. My wife and I attended a presentation in the Swan Valley recently where a guy had just finished riding a bicycle from the U.K. across the world to N.Z. 30 odd thousand kilometres in 5 years. Unassisted, and he had to learn as he went. Then when you look around you can find people who are doing this sort of thing all over. They aren’t looking for fame, they are just out there having their adventure and that sort of thing is what I find inspiring. If you won lotto? Every time there’s a big jackpot I ponder this question. And every time I come back with a different answer. I would definitely take some time out to travel and give the next step some thought but I’m fairly confident I would be handing the reins at St. Mary’s over to a younger person and taking a more relaxed approach to life. Sporting Hero? If I only get to nominate one it would be Kelly Slater. Freakish ability with the mind and attitude that has enabled him to be at the top for so long without being destroyed in the fame factory. Favourite way to relax? Cycling, surfing, reading, crosswords, movies……I’ve spent a lifetime finding ways to switch off and relax and I’m starting to get good at it. 78
