However, wildlife laws and protection regimes for these species can be different in each coun- try, making them vulnerable to getting killed during their movement across political boundaries. In addition, many migratory species are threatened with extinction due to habitat degradation, barriers in their migration routes, and other pressures. Therefore, these species need special attention by all countries that are part of their range. In a bid to protect elephants, India put through a proposal to include Indian elephants in the Appendix I of the Con- vention to the Migratory Species (CMS) which was unanimously ac- cepted by the 13th Conference of Parties (COP) of the UN Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS) at Gandhinagar in February 2020. 51
