INSTRUCTIONS: How to Use This Book The purpose of this History Makers training is more than to share relevant content on leadership. Instead, our goal is to facilitate a transformative learning experience for you in the context of Christian community and an environment of worship and prayer. This book was designed to be used by faculty and participants in History Makers Module 2. This section describes some specially designed features that will be part of your History Makers training experience, whether online, in-person, or hybrid. PRAYER TRIPLETS Prayer is the first of ILI’s five strategies to accelerate the spread of the Gospel. The organizing team will place three participants of the same gender in a “prayer triplet.” These small groups are safe spaces to share prayer requests and receive accountability and encouragement. The particular way these prayer groups function will be different for each training method. Your triplet will meet daily during in-person events. If you are part of an online or hybrid training event, prayer triplets will use breakout sessions and text messaging groups on WhatsApp or some other texting platform for interaction. BUILDING INTIMACY WITH GOD Worship, Scripture, and personal time with God are vital elements of every History Makers training that encourage intimacy with God. The organizing team will ensure all three aspects are incorporated and featured during the event, with unique practical implementation for in-person, online, and hybrid events. WORSHIP. Expressing our worship for God through song, prayer, and other expressions is encouraged during the training. • In-person: Every morning will start with approximately 15 minutes of worship through song and prayer. • Online: Video sessions will alternate devotional readings and worship videos. On odd sessions (1, 3, 5, etc.), the host will play a worship video followed by a short time of prayer. A3
SCRIPTURE. The Daily Devotionals session contains seven devotional messages to encourage participants to practice spiritual disciplines and deepen their intimate relationship with God. • In-person: Every morning, after the worship time, a faculty member will bring a ten-minute devotional reflection based on one of the seven messages. • Online: Video sessions will alternate devotional readings and worship videos. On even sessions (2, 4, 6, etc.), the host will bring a 5-minute devotional reflection based on one of the seven messages. PERSONAL TIME WITH GOD. Every leader participating in a History Makers training is encouraged to practice the spiritual disciplines to deepen their relationship with God. • In-person: Participants will have thirty minutes to themselves every morning to focus on their relationship with God and practice the spiritual discipline featured in the day’s meditation. • Online: Participants will be invited to practice the spiritual disciplines between sessions and share their experience voluntarily with other participants using the messaging forum (WhatsApp or other). THE HISTORY MAKERS CURRICULUM The History Makers Journey consists of teaching sessions and application workshops designed to equip leaders of different ages and leadership levels from various cultural and social backgrounds. The content has been designed to facilitate contextualization for maximum impact. This book contains more material than can be covered in one event. Teaching sessions and workshops are divided into two categories: Core and Electives. 1. Core sessions and workshops cover subjects required of every History Makers event, independently of the focused group or cultural circumstance. E 2. Elective sessions and workshops are chosen by the organizing team to tailor the experience based on the targeted age group or cultural context. For a complete description of the History Makers training, including the different modules and methods of delivery, please go to page 179. A4
CREATING THE BEST ENVIRONMENT FOR LEARNING The organizing team will create an environment where every participant will learn in the context of prayer and God’s presence. Facilitators and participants are equals: leaders who influence others to God’s purposes. So, instead of teachers and students, we are all peers learning from each other. Here are some practices that the organizers could implement during in-person training events: EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING ACTIVITIES are optional extracurricular activities outside the scheduled session and workshop times that can help enhance the learning experiences and require very little preparation or materials. TIME KEEPERS. History Makers is an intensive training event with a full schedule. Therefore, punctuality is essential for the accomplishment of teaching goals. The participants will be responsible for helping the organizing team stay on time. Choose a participant daily to control the teaching time and ensure that the facilitators begin and finish their sessions on time. In addition, the coordinator should provide instructions and tools for the task. WORSHIP LEADERS should be identified within the group or invited to the training to be responsible for the moments of worship through song during the training. A5

HISTORY MAKERS THE VISION Equipping Leaders. Spreading the Gospel. In the Middle Ages, God spoke to a young man in the Italian city of Assisi about “repairing my church.” Francis of Assisi went on to become a leader of one of the most significant monastic orders in the Catholic Church. The impact of Francis’ words and life echo through the centuries and influence people today. In the sixteenth century, the world was changed by the Protestant Reformation started by Martin Luther, a young priest in a small corner of Germany. A couple of centuries later, England was spared from a bloody peasant revolution by the Evangelical revival ushered in by John and Charles Wesley. In the last century, a preacher from the Southern region of the United States, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “had a dream” and the movement he started helped change the face of a nation and shape the thinking of the modern world. Also, in the last century, a small Albanian woman, known as Mother Teresa, touched the lives of countless poor men, women, and children, setting an example to serve those in need and alleviate suffering around the world. Each of these men and women were history makers in their own time. Some had a global impact while others fostered less broad—but by no means less important—changes. The common factor in these and many other examples of events and movements is a leader with a vision, a dream, and a plan. As a result, he or she led others in a movement that brought transformation and ultimately changed the course of history. Question for Reflection Do you think you could also be a History Maker? What would it take for that to happen? THE VISION THE VISION As the millennium dawned, God called together a team of leaders from around the world for the single purpose of fulfilling Christ’s command to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28:19). This team knew that accelerating the spread of the life- transforming power of the Gospel would change history. As this global team of leaders met, they focused on a very important question: What is the single most important factor impacting the acceleration of the spread of the Gospel? The answer to the question was leadership empowered by the Holy Spirit. God then gave a clear and compelling vision to the founding team of the International Leadership Institute: Change history by accelerating the spread of the Gospel through leaders of leaders empowered by the Holy Spirit. 1
THE MISSION A second key question emerged as ILI’s founding leaders prayed and asked for God’s guidance: What are the qualities of Christian leaders who are changing history? Identifying these unique facets of their faith, thinking, skills sets, and actions could potentially change history if these attributes were multiplied in the lives of others. Through fervent prayer, in-depth discussions, and two years of research, the International Leadership Institute identified the answer. The best Christian leaders live by Eight Core Values that affect who they are and everything they do. The values are: Intimacy with God - Passion for the Harvest - Visionary Leadership - Culturally Relevant Evangelism - Multiplication of Leaders - Family Priority - Faithful Stewardship - Integrity The picture was now complete. God had given the Global ILI Team a highly focused and strategic mission. The International Leadership Institute trains and mobilizes leaders of leaders to reach their nations with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In the year 2000, over 140 leaders from around the world participated in ILI’s launch event during Amsterdam 2000, a global congress on evangelism for 10,000 Christian leaders worldwide. One year later, ILI held its first international leadership event to train and mobilize leaders of leaders in the Eight Core Values. Every aspect of the ILI mission is: Biblical, Relevant, Reproducible, Transformational, and Sustainable Equipped and empowered leaders are powerful instruments in God’s hands to help bring His Kingdom on earth. The ILI tagline reflects our commitment to: Equip Leaders the Eight Core Values are powerful, transformational tools Spread the Gospel for leaders. the result of leaders equipped is the lost reached and the Gospel spread further and faster. HISTORY MAKERS The International Leadership Institute is a global movement that equips leaders of all ages and walks of life through the History Makers Curriculum. Alumni serve on the leading edge of the Church and the frontlines of the spread of the Gospel in more than 150 nations of the world. Because alumni are mobilized to train other leaders, the movement grows as each graduate invests in equipping others. One priority is investing in leaders from nations where the Gospel is the least accessible and Christians are routinely persecuted. THE VISION 2
BIBLICAL FOUNDATION God’s passion remains unchanged. The Bible proclaims, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16 The ultimate manifestation of God’s love was Christ’s death on the cross. The foundation for all we do is God’s love, Christ’s love, and the work of the Holy Spirit. “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” - Luke 19:10 It could be said that this is Jesus’ mission statement, which became the Church’s mission. “Because You [Jesus] were slain, and with Your blood You purchased persons for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.”— Revelation 5:9 Christ’s sacrifice was sufficient and targeted at men and women from every nation of the world. More than five billion people—two-thirds of the world’s population—still need to be reached with the life- transforming power of the Gospel. As Christians, we are commanded to “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of and the Holy Spirit.” — Matthew 28:19 “You will be My [Christ’s] witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”—Acts 1:8 FIVE STRATEGIES Working diligently by the power of the Holy Spirit, ILI develops leaders through five important strategies: 1 Pray Fervently for Leaders and Nations Prayer is essential for developing leaders. ILI alumni are on the frontlines of the spread of the Gospel and need constant prayer. You can participate by joining ILI’s global prayer community on Facebook. Check out our “Get Connected” page for more information. 2 Equip Leaders Through Lifelong Training ILI offers multiple History Makers discipleship and training experiences to help you develop your leadership. • Christian to the Core: Twelve discipleship sessions for individuals and small groups. Offered in-person and on-demand (in development). • History Makers Journey: Advanced leadership training experience designed for high-capacity leaders. Offered in-person, online, hybrid, and on-demand (in development). • History Makers Module 1: Fifteen sessions and workshops to help you launch your journey of leadership development, offered in-person, online, hybrid, and on- demand. 3 THE VISION
• History Makers Module 2: Seventeen sessions and workshops to prepare your leadership for higher impact. Offered in-person, online, hybrid, and on-demand (in development). 3 Coach and Mentor Selected Leaders for Local, Regional, National, and International Impact Coaching and mentoring this present generation is a priority for History Makers. ILI encourages all alumni to find coaches and mentors and to also be a coach and mentor to others. 4 Network Leaders for Shared Expertise and Encouragement ILI networks leaders through training events, alumni summits, and social media. Check the “Get Connected” page for more information. 5 Partner with Organizations and Individuals to Equip Leaders to Spread the Gospel ILI partners with organizations and leaders to leverage strengths and raise up more leaders who can effectively accelerate the spread of the Gospel and equip others to do the same. THE POWER OF MULTIPLICATION Training leaders is not enough. Alumni must also be mobilized to train other leaders. The apostle Paul gave clear instructions to Timothy: “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” — 2 Timothy 2:2 Every History Makers graduate is challenged to equip men and women to be leaders for the advancement of the Gospel. Training leaders to accelerate the spread of the Gospel will change lives. Alumni at every level are expected to multiply their training by leading events for leaders in their networks and other strategies. They are also encouraged to use ILI’s small group discipleship resource called Christian to the Core. ILI provides the necessary resources—such as teaching notebooks, audiovisual presentations, and other reference documents—to every graduate in digital form. Because of the power of multiplication, the global ILI team is growing exponentially with a single focus: reach the lost with the Gospel and see the Kingdom of God come on earth. Will you commit to join this global network by multiplying your History Makers training to others? THE VISION 4
THE EIGHT CORE VALUES Based on global research, the Eight Core Values are essential for effective Christian leadership. These core values form the foundation of the History Makers training. INTEGRITY IwNitThIMGAoCdY PfoArStShIeOHNarvest Faithful LVeISaIdOeNrsAhRipY HE EIGHT RCEveUalLenTvgUaenRlitAsmLLY STEWARDSHIP PFAriMorIiLtYy CVAOLUREES MULTIPoLfICLeAaTdIOerNs INTIMACY WITH GOD God looks for consecrated men and women who lead from an intimate relationship with God. Biblical Foundation—Romans 8:15 “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by Him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’” The world needs people who are deep in their spiritual lives. True intimacy with God occurs through intentional effort and discipline over a long period of time as your relationship with Him grows deeper. What needs to happen for you to develop a more intimate relationship with God? 5 THE VISION
PASSION FOR THE HARVEST God looks for men and women who share a passion for those without Christ. Jesus came to “seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10). God desires that everyone be reached with the life-transforming power of the Gospel. Biblical Foundation—Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Two-thirds of the world is yet to respond to God’s love. Millions suffer in poverty. Countless are exploited and enslaved. Until all are reached with the Gospel, every Christian is challenged to accept the privilege and responsibility to share the Good News with others. In what ways are you personally involved with the fulfillment of the Great Commission (Matt. 28:19–20)? VISIONARY LEADERSHIP God looks for men and women who are biblically committed to cast vision, set goals, mobilize the Body of Christ, and overcome obstacles in order to reach the nations for Christ. Biblical Foundation—Habakkuk 2:2, NASB “Record the vision and inscribe it on tablets, that the one who reads it may run.” Servant leaders are needed based on God’s vision for the world. These leaders set goals, mobilize the Body of Christ, and overcome obstacles in order to meet needs and bring Christ to the nations. Have you discovered God’s vision for your life? THE VISION CULTURALLY RELEVANT EVANGELISM God looks for men and women who live and teach the Gospel with cultural relevance, sensitivity, and power, so that the eternal truth of the Gospel will be understood and received in every culture of the world. Biblical Foundation—1 Corinthians 9:22 “I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.” The life-transforming power of the Gospel must be communicated by word and deed in the power of the Holy Spirit with cultural relevance. The Gospel is equally relevant to every language and culture in the world. What are the best ways to share God’s love with people in your context? 6
MULTIPLICATION OF LEADERS God looks for men and women who disciple, coach, and mentor other leaders, who in turn become leaders of leaders who effectively train others. Biblical Foundation—2 Timothy 2:2 “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” Excellent leaders multiply themselves by raising up other leaders who effectively lead God’s people and who will raise up other leaders. What are you doing to develop this present generation of leaders? FAMILY PRIORITY God looks for men and women who are convinced that the family is God’s building block for society and who make their families a priority in developing leaders. Biblical Foundation—Genesis 1:27–28; 2:24 So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” . . . That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. God ordained the family and provides guidelines for developing a healthy, strong family. Family is the first place that each person should express his or her love and leadership. What are the greatest opportunities and challenges facing your family now? FAITHFUL STEWARDSHIP THE VISION God looks for men and women who are faithful stewards of finances, time, and spiritual gifts in their personal lives and leadership with the result that people are reached with the Gospel. Biblical Foundation—Matthew 25:23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’” Leaders are responsible for using God’s gifts to achieve maximum impact for the Kingdom of God. How could you use your finances, time, and spiritual gifts more effectively to help bring the Kingdom of God on earth? 7
INTEGRITY God looks for men and women of integrity who live holy lives and who are accountable to God and to the Body of Christ. Integrity glorifies God, protects leaders from stumbling, and encourages growth. Biblical Foundation—2 Timothy 4:7 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” God desires that leaders maintain integrity and finish well in their lives and leadership. Integrity provides moral authority for our lives. What must you do today to make sure you finish well in your life and leadership? The Eight Core Values are like a bookshelf with the books listed in a special order. The two bookends are Intimacy with God and Integrity. In between are the other six Core Values. Each is critically important by itself; however, the real power and synergy of the Core Values come from balancing all eight in your life. With all eight, your life has strength and great satisfaction. Although you will face many challenges, you will be equipped to experience God’s power and presence each day. All builders know that a strong foundation is essential for every building project. Any weak area will eventually compromise other parts of the building. When the foundation is strong, the building will endure for generations. The Eight Core Values create a powerful foundation for living a meaningful and purposeful life. Each is essential, but the real strength is found in the way the Eight Core Values work together. They are the foundation for this journey; they are the foundation for your life. Compare them with your expectations, and evaluate your life based on the Eight Core Values. THE VISION 8
WORKSHOP Rank each statement below from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree) by circling the appropriate number. I have an intimate relationship with God. 12345 I am compelled by Christ’s passion for the lost to reach people who are without Christ. 12345 I discovered God‘s purpose for my life, and I am living out that purpose. 12345 I share God’s love with people in the hope that they will become followers of Jesus. 12345 I am intentionally investing time to develop other leaders to bring the Kingdom of God on earth. 12345 My family is a priority in my life and leadership. 12345 I am a faithful steward of the time, money, and spiritual gifts that God has given me. 12345 I am committed to integrity in every area of my life and in all circumstances. 12345 CONCLUSION William Carey was a humble shoemaker and lay leader in seventeenth-century England. He answered the call of God to take the Gospel to India despite great opposition from his peers and superiors. Today, Carey is known as “the father of modern missions.” His lifetime of Christian service changed history. May his words below serve as inspiration for this training and your leadership. “Expect great things from God. Attempt great things for God.” 9 THE VISION
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING ACTIVITY INTERVIEW AND INTRODUCTION This is an easy exercise designed to help participants know each other better and introduce everyone to the group. NEEDED RESOURCES Pens and paper INSTRUCTIONS 1. Pair participants in groups of two. 2. Each participant will interview each other asking the following standard questions: a. Name, age, profession/student? b. Describe your family (parents, siblings, other members of your family). c. Who was your favorite school teacher and why did you like him or her? d. What do you want your life to look like twenty years from now? e. Why are you attending History Makers? f. What is one unique thing about you that most people don’t know (no dirty secrets, please)? 3. Introductions. Each participant will introduce the person they interviewed to the rest of the group in 30 seconds or less, using the information they collected from their interview and any additional interesting information they found out. THE VISION 10
HISTORY MAKERS EXPECTATIONS WORKSHOP Opening Your Heart For God’s Work TEACHING OBJECTIVE To express our expectations for this History Makers training and foster a sense of expectancy for the great things that God will reveal to us during this training. INTRODUCTION What did you think when you were first invited to History Makers? Did you begin to imagine the impact this training would have on you? Everyone joined this training expecting something. This workshop is designed to let you voice your expectations. We will then build the hopes and dreams of each participant to pursue those. EXPECTATIONS: WHAT WILL GOD DO? Paul’s exaltation at the end of the third chapter of Ephesians challenges every believer: “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen.” — Ephesians 3:20–21 God can do more through us than we can ask or imagine—immeasurably more. His power is at work in us. He reveals His glory through us, resulting in lost people experiencing His grace and coming to Him. How can we experience God’s power to do in us “immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine”? It is possible to live in this power, and many around the world do. If you are willing, God can also use you to reveal Himself in a fallen world. He wants you to participate in His glory and experience the sheer joy of it. He loves you that much. Paul’s exciting sense of expectancy should be a part of every Christian’s approach to life. Expectancy is not blind, unrealistic optimism. It is founded on our trust in the God who turned Good Friday into Easter Morning. It puts confidence in God, who “in all things . . . works for the good of those who love Him” (Rom. 8:28). Our sense of expectation is founded on faith. The writer of Hebrews defines faith as looking forward expectantly: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (Heb. 11:1). This was the attitude of the heroes of faith who are described in this great chapter of the Bible. 11 EXPECTATIONS WORKSHOP
British leader John Wesley had this outlook. At the end of his life, he stated the following words: “The best is yet to be.” What is the “immeasurably more” that God is going to work for our good in this History Makers training? We focus on that question in this session. YOUR HOPES Reflect on your expectations and hopes for this training. Do you hope to find new skills for your life and ministry? Do you desire help to solve a problem you are facing? Do you need to “recharge your batteries” for the next stage of your life? Do you seek fellowship and teaching that will offer you great encouragement? All of us on the ILI team hope that this training will provide you with all of these things. We also hope that you will receive much more! OUR GOALS The leaders of this History Makers team also approach this training with great expectation. Here is, in summary, what we expect will happen during this training: RELEVANT INFORMATION Part of our goal is to give you information, the knowledge that will help you in your life and leadership. But in a limited time, we can provide only so much information. So, rather than overloading you, we hope to stimulate and inspire you to see more for yourself. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Our team is concerned with helping people grow spiritually in a living relationship with God through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. The second goal of this training is to help you launch or accelerate your leadership development. Our fellowship together and your interaction with the teaching will provide you with a positive growth opportunity. Together, we will learn from one another as we all press forward in our personal development. SPIRITUAL TRANSFORMATION There is a third aspect to our expectation for this training. It is undoubtedly God’s intention that all Christians grow spiritually and develop in their relationships with Him. But we know that in our natural physical growth, we sometimes experience “growth spurts,” especially in our teenage years. A similar growth acceleration can happen spiritually at any time. We are going along steadily in our spiritual development, and then, suddenly, God moves us forward in a great leap. When that happens, we look back and see that we have been changed, transformed. So, our third aim, hope, and prayer are that we all shall experience one of those leaps forward: spiritual transformation through participating in this training. EXPECTATIONS WORKSHOP 12
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS For each of the statements below, prayerfully write one to three responses. Complete the sentence: I want to learn more about . . . For this first question, focus on specific leadership or life principles you would like to learn more about. This question is more about broader leadership themes than practical application (that will come next). Complete the sentence: I want to learn how to . . . For the second question, focus on specific and practical leadership and/or ministry skills that you would like to acquire. Complete the sentence: I want to be different in my spiritual life in the areas of . . . For this last question, we suggest you focus on areas in your life that need growth or perhaps something you would like God to change in your leadership style. 13 EXPECTATIONS WORKSHOP
WORKSHOP Our workshop will be divided into three sections, individual reflection, group discussion, and a presentation. INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION Spend 10 minutes in prayerful reflection and answer the three questions proposed above. Next, write your personal list of expectations on the spaces provided in the book. This is an essential step because you will be able to review your expectations after the training. GROUP DISCUSSION Spend 20 minutes discussing the expectations of each group member and make a group list of the three most relevant responses for each question to be shared with the group. Make sure to write your group’s expectations in the space provided. Each group should choose a spokesperson who will present their final list to the class. PRESENTATION During the last 15 minutes of the session, each group will share their nine expectations (three for each question) with the entire group. Write down any new and relevant expectations presented by the other groups. CONCLUSION The greatest expectations have little meaning if we don’t actively pursue them. We will conclude this workshop with a time of prayer, along the lines of James 1:5 “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” Let’s pray individually and collectively for God’s eternal wisdom. Let us commit to becoming active learners, engaging with the facilitators and the content. We can trust the Holy Spirit to reveal eternal truths and insight to each of us during this training event and beyond. EXPECTATIONS WORKSHOP 14
HISTORY MAKERS INTIMACY WITH GOD Going Deeper CORE VALUE God looks for consecrated men and women who lead from an intimate relationship with God. TEACHING OBJECTIVE To understand the importance of having an intimate relationship with God as the beginning point of our leadership and to take practical steps to deepen that relationship. INTRODUCTION Imagine you are on a boat over the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. When you look down on the reef, the image is blurry, but you can make out the rock formations and coral beneath you. You can even detect the outline or shadow of some fish. Now, imagine that you put on a mask and dive beneath the surface of the water. Suddenly, you realize you are in one of the most beautiful places on earth. You are awestruck by the variety of plant and animal life; multicoloured fish swim gently among a kaleidoscope of sea fans and coral. Had you not dived into the depths, you would have missed knowing the true beauty of this special place. Now imagine exploring a cave and traveling deep into the earth until you discover unusual rock formations, including stalactites and stalagmites. Perhaps you even find gorgeous gems such as quartz, amethysts, turquoise, rubies, or diamonds. If you go deep enough, you might even discover something no one else has ever seen. In both examples, you experience the beauty of the ocean reef or the majesty of a cave only when you take the time to explore the depths. The same is true of our relationship with God. You can have a surface relationship or you can go deeper and develop an intimate relationship with Him. Deep within every soul stands a meeting place, a castle, where the believer and God can commune. For some believers, the castle is filled with warmth, joy, and laughter. For others, it is empty, lonely, and virtually non-existent. The choice is yours: cultivate a rich, fruitful inner life with the Lord, or let it remain stagnant and barren.1 15 INTIMACY WITH GOD
BIBLICAL FOUNDATION The Bible gives us three very special images of our relationship with God that help us understand different aspects of this intimate relationship: best friends, parent and child, and the relationship between a man and a woman in marriage. The development of each of these relationships requires a commitment over time. BEST FRIENDS The Bible reports many examples of people walking in intimacy with the Lord, but His relationship with Moses was special. Moses and God were friends: “As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the entrance, while the LORD spoke with Moses . . . The LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. ” —Exodus 33:9,11 The image of best friends speaks of intentionality. We are not best friends with every acquaintance we make, but only with those we take time to know in depth. Friendship also speaks of mutuality. To say that we are friends of God affirms that both parties are interested and intentional in the relationship. PARENT AND CHILD Jesus referred to the almighty God as His Father or His “Daddy” (Abba in Aramaic). To a Jew, even to pronounce the name of Yahweh is prohibited. Such an intimate way of addressing God must have surprised many. In His last prayer recorded in the Gospel of John, Jesus prayed that we would relate to God in a manner similar to His relationship with Abba. My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in Me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as You are in Me and I am in You. May they also be in Us so that the world may believe that You have sent Me. —John 17:20–21 To compare our relationship with God to a parent and child reveals God’s unconditional love for us and the assurance that, as a Father, He will never forsake us. MARITAL RELATIONSHIP The prophet Jeremiah was God’s special instrument to proclaim God’s message. He prophesied often against idolatry and called people to fully follow God. Through Jeremiah, God said, “‘I will give them a heart to know Me, that I am the LORD. They will be My people, and I will be their God, for they will return to Me with all their heart.’” —Jeremiah 24:7 INTIMACY WITH GOD 16
The word “know” translated in this verse and other Old Testament texts has a deeper meaning than the mere head knowledge that the English language implies. The same word is often used to express relationship with another person, and in its most intimate form, it includes the physical relationship between husband and wife (Gen. 4:1). The Song of Solomon uses the image of love between a husband and a wife as a metaphor for the relationship between God and His children. The New Testament calls the Church “The Bride of Christ” and talks about the end times as the marriage feast of the Lamb. To look at our relationship with God in terms of the intimate love between spouses speaks of intimacy in the greatest depths of our being. This is where our innermost secrets are open before the God who loves us with an eternal and unconditional love. WORKSHOP Review the three biblical foundation images: best friends, parent and child, and marital relationship. Which image is the most helpful to explain intimacy with God for you? Why? 17 INTIMACY WITH GOD
BARRIERS TO INTIMACY Every Christian leader recognizes the importance of an intimate relationship with God. The depth of our relationship with God will determine the quality of our lives and leadership. At the same time, we must admit certain obstacles that try to block this relationship. The following obstacles hinder the deepening of our intimacy with God, stifle our Christian growth, and limit our ability as leaders. 1 2 BARRIER: Superficiality BARRIER: Failure to Prioritize Richard Foster states, “Superficiality is the Our days are marked by the demands curse of our age. SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES THE PATH TO INTIMACY WITH GOD3 Athletes train. Actors rehearse. Musicians practice. Too many contemporary Christians sit idle and wonder why nothing ever changes. God has provided every believer with ways to experience His grace and grow in a deepening relationship with Him. The path is found in spiritual disciplines, those time- tested practices that bring us before the throne of Grace. The most common and helpful disciplines involve prayer, worship, the Bible, and service. INTIMACY WORSHIP WITH GOD SERVICE Spiritual BIBLE Disciplines PRAYER The Holy Spirit uses these elements to move us past the superficial appearances of conventional life into the unseen depths of spiritual reality. They are “means of grace” that help us to present ourselves with hungry hearts before God that He may draw us close. In worship, we surrender our lives to God and express our love. Through the Bible we come to understand His character and hear His voice. In prayer, we share our deepest longings and receive direction and encouragement. In service, we allow ourselves to be used by Him in reaching out to others. WORKSHOP Within a small group, discuss the following question: What helps you go deeper in your intimacy with God? INTIMACY WITH GOD 20
CONCLUSION Intimacy is a choice and a commitment. The choice is yours: Cultivate a rich, fruitful, inner life with the Lord, or let it remain stagnant and barren. “My heart says of You, ‘Seek His face!’ Your face, LORD, I will seek.” —Psalm 27:8 To develop this deep, abiding fellowship with Christ, you need to have the heart and the desire to share your whole self with your Savior. “My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.”—Psalm 84:2 As you commit yourself to come closer to God, God will come closer to you and your intimacy will deepen. “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” —James 4:8a FOR YOUR PRIVATE TIME (FOR YOU AND THE LORD ONLY) Make a list of what would have to happen in order for you to know God in a more intimate way. Write down at least one specific action you will take to seek deeper intimacy with the Lord. During this week, spend time in prayer to “purpose in your heart” or to “make up your mind” that you will not allow anything to stop you from seeking the Lord in order to see Him “face to face.” Our goal during these days is to fellowship with each other, to learn, and most of all, to know God at the deeper levels of intimacy! 21 INTIMACY WITH GOD
HISTORY MAKERS DAILY DEVOTIONALS Practicing Daily Spiritual Disciplines CORE VALUE God looks for consecrated men and women who lead from an intimate relationship with God. OBJECTIVE Deepen every participant’s intimacy with God and start them on a path of practicing classical spiritual disciplines. INTRODUCTION Every day of our lives should start in God’s presence. Therefore, the first activity at every History Makers training should be a time with God. It will include worship, an inspirational message, and a period dedicated to a personal time before God. Each of these elements will be carried out differently depending on the training experience. WORSHIP Every day during in-person events or every online encounter should start with worship. These are the resources needed to lead participants in worship. IN-PERSON TRAINING: The event organizers will recruit a team of worship leaders and musicians from among the participants. If that is not possible, the organizers may enlist a guest worship leader. If that is not possible, audio tracks or YouTube videos may be used, preferably with lyrics. ONLINE TRAINING: Select YouTube worship videos to be watched together at the beginning of every encounter. DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE Each day during in-person events and at every other online encounter will focus on one specific spiritual discipline. The seven inspirational messages below will serve as a guide. The remaining reflections will serve as inspiration for you to continue the practice of Spiritual Disciplines after the conclusion of the training. 23 DAILY DEVOTIONALS

The scriptures speak of worship through singing, playing of instruments, dancing, raising of hands, spoken words, shouts, silence, lying prostrate, acts of service, creative offerings, and more. THE GREAT VALUE OF JOURNALING The discipline of writing slows us down. It prevents us from thinking about the many things going through our minds, forcing us to focus on ourselves and our relationship with God. Providing a written record allows us to look back and reminds us of God’s faithfulness in our lives. It also encourages our growth, as we don’t want to remain spiritually static, and journaling helps us track our movement. Here are one pastor’s thoughts as to the value of journaling in his life and ministry. “I have been journaling for almost eleven years now. My practice is to write each morning and then to go back and see what I wrote on this date in previous years. I started journaling because it helped me to focus on what I wanted to say to God and because it gave me a way to recount the day’s events. Journaling has been a significant blessing in my spiritual life and ministry, including the following ways: a. It reminds me of God’s faithfulness. I read what I wrote in the midst of confusion, difficult decisions, prayers that I poured out to God and then I am able to see how the story ends. It renews my faith and helps me to have faith in the face of current uncertainties and difficulties. b. It gives me faith to write bold prayers. Because I am reminded daily of God’s faithfulness, I think I have grown to where I can pray bolder prayers. c. It helps me be in ministry to others. Often I will read where two years ago, or six years ago on this date a friend lost a parent, or some way in which God blessed a friend. I can send a text or e-mail or write a note that simply says I know this is a special day for you and I am praying for you.” SUGGESTIONS FOR JOURNALING Every day, or at least every two or three days, write down in a notebook or journal: The events of the day, your thoughts and feelings about those events, and any questions, confusion, or celebrations surrounding what has transpired. Write about the things that you are facing, decisions, any difficulties or uncertainties, anything that is causing anxiety or fear. Write the circumstance and your prayer expressing your thoughts, feelings, and needs. List the needs of others that God brings to your mind, along with your prayer for them and their needs. As you look back to past entries, note God’s past faithfulness and express your gratitude for answered prayers. 27 DAILY DEVOTIONALS

As such, studying and understanding the Word of God is crucial for our Spiritual survival and growth. Consider what the Scripture says about the benefits of the Word of God. The Word of God can keep us from sin. (Psalm 119:11) The Word of God provides guidance for our lives. (Psalm 119:105) The Word of God will encourage faith. (Ro. 10:17) The Word of God will help us to be wise. (Psalm 119:98-99) There are many other benefits that could be listed. Paul summarizes the importance of understanding Scriptures when he tells his mentee Timothy these words. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. — 2 Timothy 3:16-17 In the same letter, Paul tells Timothy to study the Scriptures diligently so that he would be approved by God as one who handled accurately the Word of Truth (2 Timothy 2:15). When we study the Bible, we look deeply at a passage, ask questions, compare references, and ask God to reveal His truth. In study, we seek to understand what was said in the original context, and then discern how that truth applies to our lives and context today. There are different ways to systematically study the Bible. Here are a few suggestions: Study a particular passage, such as the Sermon on the Mount (Mt. 5-7). Work through an entire book of the Bible, day by day, focusing on a specific portion each day. Do a character study of a biblical figure, or comparing two different characters such as King Saul and King David. Do a word study, looking up all the references in which a certain word is found in the Scriptures. This will help reveal the full truth about what God says about key concepts. Examples would include grace, prayer, judgment, mercy, the Holy Spirit, etc. DAILY DEVOTIONALS 28
To study well, plan to block out a reasonable amount of time (at least 20-30 minutes), and eliminate distractions. You may find it helpful to have a concordance and/or a Bible dictionary handy, as well as a notebook. In today’s connected world, there are several online resources that can help you understand the meaning of certain words or passages. Finally, ask God to let His Word speak, and open yourself to receive and apply the truth you will find. BIBLICAL MEDITATION FOCUSING ON GOD’S WORD WITH ONENESS OF MIND You may be thinking, “Sit with your legs crossed, hold your thumb against your index finger, and chant strange words in a foreign language.” This may come to your mind because Christian meditation is seldom practiced and widely misunderstood. Many associate meditation with Eastern religions. Christian meditation has nothing to do with Yoga, Transcendental Meditation, or any other such practices. It is not about emptying your mind, but rather filling it in a particularly focused manner. It is not the mindless repeating of a word or phrase of one’s choosing, but rather the thoughtful consideration of a specific portion of God’s Word. In the Bible, to meditate literally means to speak to oneself or to speak again and again in one’s mind or heart. Seen in that light, Christian meditation is to consider something in a focused manner, over some period of time, thinking deeply, seeking to discern the fullness its meaning. The primary object of our meditation should be the Word of God. Psalm 119 tells us repeatedly that the Word of God should be our meditation. It should be treasured in our hearts and occupy our minds all day. Here are some other texts that encourage meditation. Psalm 4:4 encourages us to be silent and meditate while in bed. Psalm 1:1-3 encourages us to meditate in God’s Word day and night. Those who do that are considered “blessed. In Hebrews 12:2, we are told to “fix our eyes on Jesus,” having that single focus that Christian meditation represents. In Philippians 4:8, Paul tells us to let our minds dwell (meditate) on things that are “true, honourable, right, pure, lovely, of good repute, excellent, and worthy of praise.” So, Christian meditation is the spiritual discipline in which we consider deeply and in a focused and intentional way, the Word of God, the attributes of God, the Person and work of Jesus Christ, or the pure, good, true, praiseworthy things which reflect and reveal God’s truth. It is filling our mind with thoughts of these things in order to gain deeper clarity and understanding of the things of God. SUGGESTIONS FOR MEDITATION After finding a place free of distractions, prayerfully choose a verse or short portion of Scripture to think about. Read it to yourself, perhaps aloud. Work to memorize the passage. Continue to think of segments of the whole of the passage, perhaps a keyword. Ask God to speak to you, revealing to you the full truth of the passage and all the implications and applications for your life. Realize that this may be an exercise repeated many times as you seek insight into a single verse. 29 DAILY DEVOTIONALS

DAY 1 DAY 2 DAY 3 DAY 4 DAY 5 Worship Solitude Journaling Biblical Study Prayer & & Silence & Meditation Fasting PRAYER CONVERSATIONS WITH THE GOD OF THE UNIVERSE It is amazing to think that the God of the universe is listening, attentive, and waiting for us to pray to him, but that is the truth, present throughout Scripture and written in the pages of salvation history. “Prayer – secret, fervent, believing prayer – lies at the root of all personal Godliness.” -William Carey “Prayer does not equip us for greater works – prayer is the greater work.” -Oswald Chambers These words from the past remind us of the supreme importance of prayer. Prayer is both an incredible privilege and perhaps the most crucial key to living a life surrendered to Jesus Christ. There is nothing really complex about prayer. In its essence, to pray is simply to communicate with God. It is the truthful opening of and expressing of one’s thoughts, attitudes, desire, questions—one’s whole heart and life before God. Through prayer we enter into conversation with God, leading to communion with God, resulting in affirmation, instruction, correction, direction, and confidence from God. Like in all good conversations, we speak to God and listen as He speaks to us. Through prayer we can know God better, recognize His voice more easily, and fellowship with Him regularly. Prayer is essential for numerous reasons, but foundationally because God is so insistent and passionate about it. Consider what Scripture have to say about the importance of prayer: Jesus modelled a life of prayer (Luke 6:12) We should pray about everything (Philippians 4:6) We should pray so as to not enter into temptation (Luke 22:40) We should pray when we are suffering and/or for healing (James 5:13-14) We should pray to do spiritual battle (Matthew 17:21) DAILY DEVOTIONALS 30
PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS Here are six practical ideas for developing a deep, consistent prayer life. Have a designated place (your “prayer closet”) to go to for times of prayer. Go regularly to that place of prayer to meet with and to speak to and listen to God. Carry on a conversation with God throughout the day, talking with Him like to a friend. Ask God in “real time” to guide you as you make even the smallest decisions. Pray the Scriptures. Learn how to pray using God’s word to pray. Be completely honest with God above all. He knows the human heart and nothing can be hidden from Him. FASTING PUTTING OUR BODIES UNDER SUBMISSION FOR GOD’S GLORY It may be because our culture is so enslaved to our appetites, or perhaps it is some evil strategy of our enemy to keep us from God’s blessings. Whatever the reason, the discipline of fasting is a very important spiritual practice that we rarely engage or even talk about in our day. The reality is that by ignoring the spiritual discipline of fasting, we are missing out on a great opportunity for a deeper intimacy with God than we have ever experienced or imagined. Throughout the Bible, fasting refers to abstaining from food for spiritual purposes. The Greek word for fasting is “nestia.” This is a compound word, with a negative prefix (ne) added to the word for “to eat” (esthio). So the word for fasting means simply to not eat. From a biblical perspective however, fasting means to intentionally choose to not consume foods with specific spiritual reason and purposes in mind. Jesus practiced fasting and implied by his teaching that it would be a regular aspect of the life of those who chose to follow Him (Mt. 9:14-15; Mt. 6:16-18). Likewise, unless there is a specific medical reason making it dangerous for you to fast, this discipline should be a regular and valued part of our Spiritual life. Though fasting can often have a very specific goal in mind, there are two important benefits to fasting that make it a practice that should be a regular part of our devotional life with God, even if there are no specific issues involved. WE BRING OUR FLESH UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE SPIRIT. When we abstain from food for an extended period, our bodies will begin to demand that we eat. Our normal practice is to respond to our appetite. Through fasting, we exert control over our appetites and desires, rather than letting them control us. BY FASTING, WE CAN INTENTIONALLY EXALT THE GIVER OR THE GIFTS. Food is a good gift from God, and should be enjoyed and even celebrated. But the Giver is more precious than the gift. Through fasting we say to God, “Lord, You are more precious to me than your good gifts, even food.” Here are some aspects of fasting and specific benefits of this discipline for our spiritual life and intimacy with God. 31 DAILY DEVOTIONALS
Fasting is an act of obedience to a specific biblical command. (Mt 6:16) We fast to be heard by God. (Isaiah 58:4,9) We fast so we can be delivered. (Isaiah 49:24-25) We fast when we need revelation from God. (Daniel 9:2,3,21-22) We fast for health and healing. (Isaiah 58:8) Fasting as a weapon in our spiritual warfare. (Mt. 17:14-21) PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS FOR FASTING Study the subject of fasting in the Bible. Make sure you are medically able to fast before attempting it. Begin with short fasts and gradually move to larger periods of time. Stay well hydrated during your fast. You must decide whether you will drink only water, or will add fruit juices or other drinks. For longer fasts, it may be wise to consider drinking something besides water. Fasting is not something that should be a legalistic requirement, but a spiritual discipline one chooses to engage in for their benefit and to obey and please God. Break a prolonged fast gradually with meals that are light and easy to digest. Take time for prayer, Scripture reading, singing, or devotional reading during your fast (you can use the regular meal times). Remember, fasting is not an end in itself. Remember, fasting is not supposed to be easy. It is supposed to be difficult enough to be a sacrifice and to require discipline. Though challenging, it will be of great benefit when incorporated into one’s spiritual life. DAILY DEVOTIONALS 32
HISTORY MAKERS THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE LEADER Power to Accelerate the Spread of the Gospel CORE VALUE God looks for consecrated men and women who lead from an intimate relationship with God. TEACHING OBJECTIVE To understand the importance of the fullness of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Christian leader and to seek the fullness of the Holy Spirit in our lives and leadership. This session is the outline of an inspirational message to be shared (preached) in the context of worship. INTIMACY AND THE FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT Deep intimacy with God begins when we open our hearts and ask God to completely fill us with Himself. This requires a willingness on our part to fully surrender to God. It is at the point of our complete surrender that God can fill us with Himself. This is what it means to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to His Followers and assured them that the Holy Spirit would come and give them guidance: “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come.” —John 16:13 Jesus also promised the Holy Spirit would fill the disciples with power to be Christ’s witnesses: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” — Acts 1:8 NOTE: Different theological traditions have different views on the work of the Holy Spirit, particularly with regards to the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and the manifestation of the Spiritual Gifts. We require that this session be done in a way that respects different positions while at the same time affirming the empowering work of the Spirit in the life of the believer. If a true spirit of unity is maintained, God will greatly bless this session and touch every participant, independent of their particular theological position on the matter. 33 THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE LEADER
THE PROMISE WAS FULFILLED ON PENTECOST The second chapter of Acts begins with an exciting account of what happened at the upper room as the faithful group of disciples prayed and sought the presence of God: “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” — Acts 2:1-4 THE TRANSFORMATION Jesus’ disciples provide a clear example of the work of the Holy Spirit. The Gospels give us a picture of their lives before they were filled with the Holy Spirit. The Acts of the Apostles describe their lives after the day of Pentecost. The differences between the two periods clearly demonstrate how God works through Spirit-filled believers. FROM FEAR TO COURAGE FROM POWERLESS EFFORTS TO “On the evening of that first day of POWERFUL SIGNS the week, when the disciples were “When they came to the crowd, a man together, with the doors locked for approached Jesus and knelt before Him. fear of the Jewish leaders.” — John ‘Lord, have mercy on my son,’ he said. ‘He 20:19a has seizures and is suffering greatly. He “When they saw the courage of Peter often falls into the fire or into the water. and John and realized that they were I brought him to Your disciples, but they unschooled, ordinary men, they were could not heal him.’” — Matthew 17:14–16 astonished and they took note that “As a result, people brought the sick these men had been with Jesus.” — into the streets and laid them on beds Acts 4:13 and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.” — Acts 5:15 FROM FEAR FROM SELF FROM THE END TO COURAGE AMBITION TO POWERLESS RESULT EFFORT TO UNITY IN POWERFUL LOVE SIGNS THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE LEADER 34
FROM SELF AMBITION TO UNITY THE END RESULT IN LOVE The Church experienced tremendous “She said, ‘Grant that one of these two growth in the first generation of its sons of mine may sit at Your right and history, even in the face of persecution, as the other at Your left in Your kingdom.’ . . . When the ten heard about this, they people put their trust in the risen Christ. were indignant with the two brothers.” The book of Acts shows the progression — Matthew 20: 21, 24a of this growth: “All the believers were one in heart Three thousand believed on the day of and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but Pentecost (Acts 2:41). they shared everything they had.” — Believers were added daily to the community Acts 4:32 (Acts 2:47). The number of believers increased (multiplied) rapidly (Acts 6:7). The disciples were scattered by persecution, and preached the message in Judea and Samaria (Acts 8). Paul and Barnabas are sent as missionaries on their first journey through the Roman Empire (Acts 13:1–4). CONCLUSION The same promise that Jesus made to His disciples is just as valid today as when Jesus spoke it to His followers. To fully know God, you must personally know and experience the third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. In Acts, Luke records the clear instructions that Jesus gave to the disciples after His resurrection. On one occasion, while [Jesus] was eating with them, He gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift My Father promised, which you have heard Me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” — Acts 1:4–5 Christ then concludes with a glorious promise to them: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” — Acts 1:8 When a leader personally experiences the power and presence of the Holy Spirit, he or she will have the power to live the Christian life, to lead the people of God according to His agenda, and to bear witness with passion and relevance. The Holy Spirit is given to those who are willing to surrender to the Lordship of Christ and ask for His fullness in their lives. God’s revealed Word always requires a response. Take time now to seek the power of the Holy Spirit in your life and leadership. You may be praying this prayer for the very first time. Search your heart. Make a fresh surrender to God. Seek the fullness and power of the Holy Spirit in your life. May the same power of the Holy Spirit that was poured out on the day of Pentecost now be poured upon you. Amen. 35 THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE LEADER
