SQP2RS “Squeepers”

Building Academic Reading Skills The make-up of any classroom usually includes a wide variety of student reading abilities. You work hard to make sure everyone learns! For some students, grade level materials is boring, while for others, that same material is incomprehensible. Reading is an internal process. Sometimes it is difficult to tell which students are struggling or which students are succeeding unless they have some sort of “output” activity after each reading task. This is one activity that gives students the support they need before, during and after reading in order to successfully meet the academic goal for each reading task.

What is SQP2RS? SQP2RS stands for survey, question, predict, read, respond and summarize. In this activity, students use cognitive and metacognitive strategies to process non fiction text. The step by step process outlined in the following slides requires students to pay attentions to text features as well as their own thinking process. As they do this, they increase their ability to comprehend academic language in text.
