About IITBombayXIITBombayX is the online extension educational service of IIT Bombay. Its website waslaunched on 26 January 2015, with a platform built on top of Open-edX. It offers MOOCs(Massive Open Online Courses) to Indian learners. The objective is to enhance teach-ing-learning and increase access to high-quality educational material for a large number ofstudents and teachers across India in a short time.IITBombayX is used for Faculty Development Programme (FDP), Hybrid MOOCs, FlippedClassroom, School teacher training, and Skill development.MethodologyIITBombayX courses consist of weekly learning sequences. Each is composed of shortvideos interspersed with interactive learning exercises, where students can immediatelypractice the concepts from the videos. The courses include tutorial videos, reading material,online quizzes and assignments. Engagement and collaborative learning happens throughdiscussion forums, cohorts, face-to-face sessions, and Wiki.The discussion forum encourages students to post questions or comments on any topic.IITBombayX offers Honor Code certificates on successful completion of a course.Engagement and IITBombayX offers hybrid MOOCs to students, combining thecollaborative learning benefits of a high quality MOOC as well as face-to-facehappens through interaction from course faculty and learning from their owndiscussion forums, college teachers. In this model, the students study the coursecohorts, face-to-face online using a MOOC, completing all online assignments.sessions, and Wiki. Apart from the online activities, the students also attend the face-to-face session with the course instructor, through AVIEW video conferencing tool every fortnight.They also interact face-to-face with their own college teachers and peers in a regularclassroom environment at their respective colleges. Local teachers are encouraged to holddiscussion and problem-solving sessions, as in ‘Flipped Classroom’. These teachers also giveassignments and course projects to their respective students, and evaluate them locally.Student’s final grade recognized by the university, has a component from IITBombayXassessment and another from the local assessment conducted by their own teachers.Teachers can monitor the online performance of their students through an MIS (Manage-ment Information System). Thus, the Hybrid model combines the best features of bothsynchronous and asynchronous modes of interaction. Currently 181 institutions acrossIndia, are using hybrid MOOCs offered on IITBombayX. Completion rate in Hybrid MOOCs, is38%, which is much higher than the 11% in regular MOOCs.The current IITBombayX platform is an integration of Drupal 8 with Open edX. We arereleasing the source code of this front-end in open source. The courses are offered usingOpen edX, while Drupal acts as a front-end. This allows an institute/individual to fetch anddisplay courses in various ways. The power of Drupal is also used to build a filter search forthe courses. Upon installing the front-end, an institute/individual will be able to leverage itspower to make a customized portal for their MOOCs. An institute will also be able tocustomize the look and feel of their MOOC portal, without writing a single line of code, andwithout changing anything at Open edX.

These MOOCs are mainly IIT Bombay SkillMOOCsextension courses, and are taught with the same rigor as those running TeachMOOCson the campus. LifeMOOCsSkillMOOC effectively trains individuals in their on-the-job skills, with a primaryfocus on professional development. The learners honing such skills are likely tosucceed by gaining a competitive edge in their profession.TeachMOOC is designed for teachers across the country, to enhance theirteaching skills, by introducing them to various pedagogical methodologies.TeachMOOCs are mostly conducted in a hybrid fashion, where the initial part oflearning is conducted online, followed by face-to-face sessions.LifeMOOC offers courses of short duration for working professionals and othersdesiring to pursue life-long learning. Life-long learning is the journey that everylearner seeks to undertake. The purpose of LifeMOOCs is to benefit learners inelevating their careers. In addition, these MOOCs may well be used as precursors toany other domain of MOOCs.
