DYNAMIC CCA DEVELOPMENT SEA Games, World Youth Championship, Asian Youth Championship and the National Schools Championship series — Diploma in Communications & Media Management (CMM) graduate Zhang Bin Bin has conquered them all. Focused and goal oriented, the avid rock climber is scaling heights (quite literally) in both the sport and her career. Crowned second runner-up in the National Climbing Championship 2015 Women’s Open Speed category, Zhang Bin Bin added this latest achievement into her growing list of accolades. She is now part of the national team representing Singapore in upcoming international competitions. While some may feel overwhelmed by the amount of time and energy required to handle both their studies and interests, it was through conscious deliberation that helped Bin Bin sail through her poly years. “I was clear about what I wanted. I knew which competitions I should focus on, which to forgo and which assignments to give my all. More importantly, I knew that whatever I do or don’t do, it would have a positive impact on my future,” she said. The lithe climber also put much of what she had learnt from her diploma to good use. In fact, the production house at which she was an intern, is her current workplace. “CMM has taught me both the hard and soft skills which I think are relevant to this industry. I went for the interview; got the internship role, and then I went back to school, graduated and got the job.” So how does she juggle work commitments and rock climbing now? “Working at PixelMusica gives me a lot of flexibility to manage my time and productivity. So while I get my work projects done, I have ample time to train for the upcoming competitions. I’ve been enjoying every second of my time here and I couldn’t ask for any better.”4

SOCIAL WORK OPPORTUNITIES The Accounting & Finance Interest group (A&F IG) collected more than 20,000 ring tabs and recycled them into artificial limbs for underprivileged amputees. They say that charity begins at home. A&F IG embarked on a mission to help the less fortunate through an eco-conscious initiative titled “Rings for Life” from May to September 2015. The Community Involvement Project (CIP) saw the involvement of the entire A&F cohort, where students were responsible for collecting used ring tabs from aluminium cans. Initially challenged to collect 10,000 ring tabs, they quickly surpassed the target from the publicity and support garnered through the clever use of social media. Gloria Lai, A&F IG Vice-President who was in charge of the project, said: “When we started Rings for Life, we weren’t sure if we could reach our initial goal. It turned out to be a pleasant surprise, to receive the ring tabs by the thousands almost every week!” Through their collective efforts, the students were able to double the total number of tabs to 20,000. The tabs were later donated to the Prostheses Foundation of H.R.H. The Princess Mother, Thailand, and recycled into prosthetic limbs for amputees. These prostheses are given out free to those in need regardless of nationality or religion. The project had been deeply rewarding in many ways! Not only did it promote camaraderie amongst the A&F students, it also instilled in them a sense of responsibility towards the community and the environment.16

I NY TOURISM INROADS Offering Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) students invaluable insights into the travel industry, the new Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Singapore TP Student Chapter was officially launched in September 2015. PATA is the leading authority for the development of Asia Pacific’s travel and tourism industry. It provides leadership and advocacy to the collective efforts of nearly 100 government, state and city tourism bodies and over 55 airlines and cruise lines. In 2015, HTM acquired the PATA Singapore Student Chapter mantle. Together with the official launch of the Temasek Tourism Academy (TTA), this establishment of the student chapter will position TP at the forefront of hospitality and tourism education. Students will find themselves learning from industry experts through site visits to various hotels and attractions, overseas exchange programmes, networking sessions and industry talks. Not only will they benefit from these industry connections, they can hone and develop their leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Following formal discussions in 2004 between the Diploma of Communications & Media Management (CMM) of TP’s School of Business, and UWA’s Faculty of Arts, the TP- UWA exchange programme was established. To date, 170 students from CMM and 200 students from UWA have taken part in the study exchange. “Celebrating the University of Western Australia – Temasek Polytechnic Partnership — 10 Years & Beyond” is also a renewal of ties between both institutions. Highlights of the event included student sharings by Sarah Ison from UWA and Dazale Choy, a TP CMM senior, and a video montage showcasing reflections of previous cohorts of UWA students. Mementos between UWA and TP were exchanged on the same day. Gracing the commemorative occasion was guest of honour, His Excellency, Mr Phillip Green, Australian High Commissioner for Singapore and Professor Krishna Sen Dean of UWA’s Faculty of Arts, Programme Coordinator. Do you think CCM has prepared you well for the industry? All the subjects that were taught are definitely valuable. It’s relevant to the outside world, and we’ll use the skills eventually. Amongst others, we were taught how to prepare food, how to run a kitchen, how to dress right and how to be a professional. CCM has provided us with an all-rounded knowledge that’s necessary for the working world. 18

X-FACTOR Jermaine Leong, CMM student and humble winner of The Final 1, shares how her diploma enhances her interest in the entertainment industry. There’s a star in the midst of CMM’s 260-plus cohort, but nobody bats an eyelid. It suits freshman Jermaine Leong just fine. Jermaine was crowned winner of MediaCorp TV’s reality singing competition The Final in October 2015, earning a Hype Records recording and artiste management contract and a S$50,000 prize. Simply put, she has the X-factor. Back on campus and away from her screaming fans, however, Jermaine looks a little embarrassed by hearty congratulations from schoolmates in the School of Business concourse. While she’s happy being a stand-out performer, she’s happy just hanging out with her classmates and working on her next assignment. “Honestly speaking, I get really shy when it comes to titles,” Jermaine told campus newspaper Stop Press. Enrolling in CMM was a natural choice for Jermaine, who turned 17 in December. “Media is so important when it comes to any career, especially music as it is involved with the media on so many platforms,” she said. Her advice to anyone unsure about whether to pursue their passion? “It is true when they say that you’ll never know until you try,” she mused. “So just go do whatever your heart desires.” 19

But luck has nothing to do with her accomplishments. Optimistic and disciplined, Shermaine juggled her responsibilities with dexterity during her three years in TP. As the TP Women’s basketball team captain, she led her girls to win a historic first-ever Polytechnic-ITE gold medal in 2013 and 2014. During her reign, the team also clinched one bronze and two silver medals at the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic Games. At the same time, she was playing in the National youth basketball team, and subsequently in the National Senior Women’s basketball squad. Last year, she represented Singapore in the 28th SEA Games against Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines. Basketball may be her life, but Shermaine prioritises her studies above all else. The Diploma in Business (BUS) alumnus graduated with a 3.87 GPA, and is furthering her studies at the Nanyang Technological University. For her ability to balance her studies and sports, she won the Lee Kong Chian Award for All-Round Excellence in 2015, proving that with dedication, it is possible to have it all.20
