Letter From THE CHAIRMAN Dear Boerboel Breeder, Owner and Enthusiast Welcome to the Royal Canin SABBS 2022 National Boerboel Show! SABBS is excited and thankful to close a challenging 2022 with a highlight and prestige event on the SABBS annual calendar. The show will be the pinnacle event for SABBS for the year 2022. We are also very excited to return to the Western Cape for the 2022 National Show. In 1997 Mr. Jannie Roodt of the then South African Boerboel Breeders’ Association stated “We are not sure that our breed is ready to be taken up into the world of showing just yet.” However, 25 years later Boerboel shows have now become important events for breeders,owners, and enthusiasts. Since the first National Show in 2008, the number of entries has grown from 120 to an average of 250 during recent years. With no National Show during 2020 due to the Covid pandemic, the 2021 National Show at the Afridome, Paris (South Africa) received a record of 412 dogs! Year after year Boerboel breeders and owners join in this annual prestigious event and 2022 promises to be no different. The year 2022 was by no means an easy year for SABBS. With a new Board elected in November 2021, the past year was one of many debates and much frustration for many. However, the leadership has performed well in difficult circumstances to catch up with what was neglected during the Covid pandemic during 2020/2021. During 2022 SABBS presented an extensive appraisal programme, breed standard workshops, identification and training of future appraisers, regional shows, Logix updates, genetic improvement programme and the ending of SA Studbook direct dealings. We honor all associated officials who volunteer their time and their selfless dedication that goes into each event to make it a success. The National Show is the platform to display and promote the Boerboel Breed, therefor we need to build on the success of previous shows. Healthy competition is also conducive in strengthening our social network. With the intention to promote the Boerboel Breed across South Africa, the National Show is preceded by regional shows during the year. During 2022 regional shows were held in the Free State, Gauteng, Southern Cape, Eastern Cape and the Western Cape. In the past the National Show has been held on a rotation basis in Paris (South Africa), Cape Town, Pretoria, Bloemfontein and Bredasdorp. With the 2021 National Show held in Paris, we decided to host this show in the Cape Town environs after an absence of 12 years! It is an exceptional privilege to share this event with our members in the Western Cape. Depending on the National Show location, breeders and owners travel from far and wide with their dogs to participate, with enthusiasts attending coming from everywhere, even overseas, to see the dogs and their owners competing against each other and to network. Boerboel shows have increasingly contributed towards the interest from the public and awareness of the breed. With reference to show participation and judging it is important to note that the dog with the best pedigree and/or appraisal score will not always be the show winner. It is to be noted that show judging is primarily guided by five characteristics of the Boerboel: general appearance, temperament, poise, angulation, and movement. In this regard, you are reminded that the Boerboel is an impressive and imposing, well-balanced dog displaying good muscle development and when moving displaying strength, endurance, and purpose. Potential judges for the 2022 show have been independently nominated by all local and international SABBS Board Members and Senior Appraisers. This was followed by a selection process of four judges out of the panel of 20 candidates tabled. The judges and every participant are thanked for their participation and commitment and we wish you the best. I thank all the organizers and everyone who worked on this show behind the scenes as well as show officials and every participant for the arrangements and contributions to make this National Boerboel Show a success.
