Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America (OSDIA) Garibaldi-Meucci Museum NYSOSDIA Board of Commissioners Dear National and State Officers, Museum Commissioners and Friends of the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum: It is with great pleasure and honor for us, as representative Chairperson and CEO of the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum (GMM) Board of Commissioners, to welcome everyone to its 32nd annual luncheon fundraiser. While these annual events have taken on a different look from year to year, this year is particularly groundbreaking in as much as it is being brought to you, for the first time, via a virtual gala event, during a global pandemic, which continues to evolve with an unpredictable outcome. We recognize our distinguished honorees this year with Robert Graham, outgoing Commissioner for the GMM, Giada Valenti, International Performer and the Hon. Thomas P. DiNapoli, NY State Comptroller. In lending their names to us, we salute them in a special way at this first ‘virtual’ luncheon ever in the history of the GMM. You, as well, our supporters have made this event an absolute social and financial success and for that we thank you. At the same time, we can happily report that despite its imposed closure to the general public, since mid- March 2020, the GMM has adapted formidably to the health crisis and forged ahead to renovate its exterior lighting, surveillance and access systems, in addition to restoring its entry doors. Although it is a significant step forward toward its restorative needs, the GMM is essentially a 177-year-old building that presently has a number of additional needs, in terms of its necessary renovation, and to that end we continue to seek your ongoing support and, yes, become a Member of the GMM! It is with the utmost level of confidence that the generous support which has historically been provided for the past one-hundred-one years by the Sons of Italy Foundation, the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America and the countless contributions from benefactors, will continue despite the abnormal circumstances we are all enduring. It is with your collective participation, collaboration and perseverance that we will succeed to preserve our unique national treasure, which symbolizes the best aspects of Italian- American heritage and culture. Our heartfelt appreciation is extended to the group of volunteers, who so tenaciously worked together to create an exceptional virtual program that will surely render a pleasurable and memorable outcome for our guests, who, for the first time, will simultaneously be viewing the day’s luncheon in an international way, throughout the United States and Europe. Buon divertimento! Fraternally, Joseph Sciame Carl J. Ciaccio Joseph Sciame Carl J. Ciaccio CEO & Chairman Emeritus Chairperson GMM Board of Commissioners GMM Board of Commissioners

` Robert Graham I grew up in England after the war and can remember visiting London as a child and seeing the devastation to the east end of London. I remember visits to school by the local police, telling the children not to dig in the bomb craters and the places where aircraft had crashed. Staten Island, GMM and OSIA were never on my mind! I was always interested in technical things, and an uncle, who worked for a British computer company, suggested that I join a training program, which required leaving school at 16 and working on punch card equipment for four days of the week and going to college one day, two evenings and a Saturday morning, all while collecting a salary and a degree. I went through the training program and was assigned to a customer, Ilford Film. That is where I got my first introduction to photography. Later as I was able to drive and had a car, I worked in the London Northeast Region on punch card equipment. My first overseas trip was a bus ride to Italy. My sister, mother and I took a ferry to Oostende in Belgium, where we boarded a bus early on a Saturday morning. It arrived in Miramare near Rimini on Sunday afternoon. I think the fare was $35. When we had more reliable cars we would drive. I always loved Italy and still have some pictures of our trips in the early 1970’s. We traveled Europe regularly and would drive to Geneva to see my cousin, after which we would drive 1000 miles to Andorra in the Pyrenees, just for the trip through the mountains. We had two “must-do” trips every year--the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Geneva Motor Show. I had no chance to go overseas with the computer company, so I joined a check printing company in England that was looking for computer engineers to design computer-controlled printing equipment to print checks. They had sold computer-controlled check printers in many countries, including the USA. I signed up in a heartbeat to come to the USA. The company in Baltimore to whom we sold the equipment hired me even before the equipment was delivered. The equipment was then sold to Citibank in New York to print travelers checks, and Citibank subsequently hired me. That is where I met my wife Geraldine. The travelers check business moved out of state, so I joined a vendor as Product Manager for the supplies division of Troy, a manufacturer of check printing equipment. One of my largest customers was the U.S. Treasury where my company’s equipment and supplies printed all U.S. Government checks. Unfortunately, checks disappeared a few years before my 65th birthday. My wife and I joined OSDIA in 2003 when Gerri was working on an “Italian Day” project. We quickly became involved, and Gerri rose through the ranks and became president of the Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro Lodge #2319, and I held the positions of financial secretary, treasurer, corresponding secretary, trustee and Commissioner of Arbitration. In addition Gerri and I have been responsible for the lodge’s newsletter since 2010. Our lodge newsletter has won several Best Newsletter awards at the NYS Conventions. I have chaired our lodge Scholarship Journal for the past 10 years and the GMM journal for the last 5 years, this year being my 6th. I currently hold the position of State Photographer. My time at the museum has been one of my favorite times at OSDIA. The GMM is truly a jewel in OSDIA, and I am proud to have been part of it for four years. I hope that I have given something and made the museum a little better or improved it is some way. I have also enjoyed being in the company of so many wonderful people that manage and run the museum on a daily basis. OSDIA should be proud of all of them.

If These Walls Could Talk In Rosebank, on the north shore of Staten Island, New York, you will find a charming cottage nestled on an expansive, manicured lawn accentuated by a prominent monument. It is where, long ago, a remarkable genius, his wife, and their famous friend lived. The remarkable genius who lived there was Antonio Santi Giuseppe Meucci. His lovely wife was Esterre Mochi Meucci. His famous friend was none other than the “Hero of Two Worlds,” Giuseppe Garibaldi. If the walls of that cottage could talk they would speak of hospitality, loyal friendship, boundless bravery, progressive thinking, inventive genius, old world trust, painful suffering, deceit, infamy, and misfortune. Antonio Meucci was born in Florence, Italy in 1808. From an early age, his innate genius became readily apparent to his parents, Amatis and Domenica Meucci. “By the time he was in his second year of elementary school his parents began thinking that he could accelerate his education.” With proper guidance, Meucci excelled in drawing, chemistry and mechanics while being the youngest student enrolled in the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze. Meucci’s formal education provided him with the knowledge and skills that served his brilliant mind well, as he applied creativity and inventive methods of improving acoustics, water purification, electroplating,* battery technology, converting wood chips to paper, improving methods of testing milk, using hydrocarbon liquids as a basis for paint, carbonating fruit juices, developing a coffee/tea filtering system, developing a public address loudspeaker system, smokeless candle wicks, and in 1848 inadvertently discovering the transmission of speech over wires. After Samuel Morse’s development of the telegraph, between the 1830s and early 1840s, Meucci’s discovery produced the very first basic means of transmission of speech over wires, which he refined and named “telettrofono,” or telephone. It is worth noting that, in 1848, when Meucci made this monumental discovery, Alexander Graham Bell, the man who much later was given all the credit for inventing the telephone, was only two years old. In 1849 Antonio and Esterre emigrated to America after living comfortably in Havana, Cuba for 15 years. They settled in that charming cottage, where they lived until their passing in 1889 and 1891, respectively. It could be said of Esterre that she was practically born with a sewing needle and thread in her hands. A child who grew to become a meticulous, highly regarded seamstress by the acting troupe of the Teatro della Pergola in Florence, Italy and of the Tacon Theater in Havana, Cuba. For so many years she painstakingly created elaborate costumes and elegant garments with only a needle and thread. Antonio continued to focus on refining the development of his telettrofono with the intention of commercializing it. His phenomenal discovery became especially useful during the early stages of development, when Esterre’s debilitating rheumatoid arthritis confined her to her upstairs bedroom. This prompted Antonio to link his telettrofono from Esterre’s second floor bedroom to his laboratory, in the basement of their home, to facilitate direct verbal communication. Unfortunately, Meucci’s efforts to commercialize his telettrofono met with financial woes and deceit. His life’s savings had been exhausted to an extent to which he could not continue to raise the $10.00 fee needed to maintain a caveat, a preliminary application to obtain a patent for his invention. Meucci also entrusted, with a handshake, his working models and detailed drawings of the telettrofono to Edward B. Grant, Vice President of American District Telegraph Company, who had initially given Meucci promising assurances and later indicated the working models and drawings had been lost. Subsequently, on March 3,1876, Alexander Graham Bell, was awarded a patent for a device that transmitted sound through wires while working in the same laboratory where Meucci had entrusted his original work on his telettrofono.
If These Walls Could Talk Upon becoming aware of this infamy, Meucci initiated a lawsuit against Bell. Subsequently, “On January 13, 1887, the Government of the United States moved to annul the patent issued to Bell on the grounds of fraud and misrepresentation. The Supreme Court found the case [had merit] and remanded it for trial.” Unfortunately, Meucci died in October 1889 and the case was discontinued, leaving the issue of who was truly entitled to the telephone patent unresolved by a court of law. Ironically, had Meucci been able to pay the $10.00 fee to maintain the caveat after 1874, a patent for the device that transmitted sound through wires could not have been issued to Bell in 1876. “The hero of two worlds,” Giuseppe Garibaldi, during his exile in America, became an intimate friend of Antonio Meucci. During his stay in the Meucci’s household, fall 1850 to spring 1851, Garibaldi found a welcoming refuge and gracious hospitality. He reciprocated the Meucci’s hospitality by working in their small candle factory, despite his nauseated reaction to the vapors emitted by melting wax. In his memoirs, Garibaldi indicates he never disclosed his discomfort to the Meucci’s out of gratitude for their hospitality. Garibaldi also spent time hunting, fishing, and writing his memoirs. It was a time of healing for a man who would later return to Italy to continue his relentless monumental battles for the unification of Italy. Ultimately, Garibaldi would be remembered as a revolutionary hero and one of the most famous nation-builders of modern Italy. “Giuseppe Garibaldi was born in 1807 in Nice, at that time under Napoleonic rule. The grandson and son of a sailor, Garibaldi spent much of his youth traveling as a merchant sailor through the Mediterranean from Nice to the Black Sea and back again.” He would soon grow to become a “relentless fighter who lived and breathed for human liberty, rights of labor, women’s emancipation, racial equality, and freedom from oppression and repression of any form.” It was all that, and unbounded courage and confident determination that enabled him to become a brilliant guerilla warrior and the greatest Italian general of modern times. The hero who ultimately succeeded in unifying Italy. Meucci’s life and his genius would most likely rein in obscurity had he not been associated with the already famous Giuseppe Garibaldi. It is also likely that the notoriety Meucci obtained through his association with Garibaldi, the United States Congress took interest in his life, through the advocacy of former congressman Vito Fossella. As a result, on June 11, 2002, H. Res. 269 of the 107th Congress declared that “the life and achievement of Antonio Meucci should be recognized, and his work in the invention of the telephone should be acknowledged.” Perhaps the sequence of those fortuitous events enabled the Meucci home to be preserved and maintained to continue standing so prominently for over one and a half centuries. The Meucci cottage is now a national landmark known as the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum (GMM). It is a place of education and cultural enrichment. A place where the legacies of worthy and honorable historical figures are recounted. A place where there is a plethora of tangible evidence of their past existence. Indeed, the cottage walls do talk. With each guided tour, they proudly recount the lives of those honorable souls who lived there. Souls that add sparks to the brilliant, voluminous heap of Italian heritage and culture. Therefore, it is imperative to continue to generously provide the GMM financial support to perpetuate the solvency of this historic landmark, proudly owned and curated by the Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America (OSDIA), since 1919. Let us also continue to show gratitude to all those selfless volunteers who provide their services with honor, reverence and respect. Finally, let us persevere all forms of support to make sure all future generations will have palpable evidence of honorable Italian-American history, as exemplified by Giuseppe Garibaldi, Antonio Meucci, and Esterre Mochi-Meucci.
