Sneak peek into the FrenchIf you think French is all about grammar, worksheets, Classroom and studies you are completely wrong. Earlier, I used to think the same, but after 9th grade, I have not only developed academically, but my perspective towards the language has also changed. We performed group activities, watched videos, movies and cartoons in French and by the way “Caillou” was my favourite. Personally, to understand French better, I used to go through Pooja ma’am’s segregated notes and solve exercises from books. Just imagine a class where the teacher speaks only french and like a parrot you could only tweet <<Répétez s’il vous plaît ?>>. Hey don’t be a DAMSEL IN DISTRESS cause this rule will surely ensure that you are confident to take on the world ! These memories of the French class would be cherished forever. By Naisha Teckwani. Learning French can open up new opportunities in various sectors like foreign language trainer, translator, diplomatic service worker, hospitality sector and this was one of the main factors that encouraged me to learn French. I knew it would always be a skill that would be handy and could be easily converted into a full-time career. Now, since I have pursued French, it will help me in many other ways like not only getting admissions in good foreign universities but also building an attractive CV that would allure new opportunities in our country too. At the end of grade 4, I was in a bubble to select either Aamchi Marathi or le français. Marathi being my mother tongue I thought French would be something fascinating. That was the beginning of my journey with French. A whole new world of alphabets, words and sounds opened up to me. It was like my secret language at home because no one understood it. By grade 8, I was introduced to the French culture, lifestyle, history and it all became very delightful. So at the end, when I had to make a choice between French and Hindi, it was very easy to decide. I worked hard to make the cut-off and I don’t regret my choice. The highlight of the journey was the interaction with the foreign exchange students and using the knowledge in the best possible way. What an enriching experience! I will finish school this year but I plan to continue my journey with french. I love speaking it as much as I admire the French Fashion. Being a millennial, keeping up with trends and the latest in vogue has not been difficult as understanding french fashion is much easier with the help of social media now. Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire are my go to french fashion magazines. They have totally changed my perspective related to styling and have taught me to always choose style as well as comfort because French fashion is afterall simple, basic, stylish yet chic. Fact Check- Did you know that Paris has been ruling as the fashion capital of the world since the 17th century ? It is also home to some of the legends in the fashion industry including - Coco Chanel, Christian Louboutin, Jean Paul Gaultier, Yves Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton. But wait, that's only the tip of the iceberg in French fashion! In addition, even the L’oreal shampoo in our bathrooms is one of the many gifts of the French. Incase you think that French is only limited to ‘Le Mussée du Louvre’ and ‘La Notre Dame’, you are absolutely wrong. There is plenty more to apprendre et s’amuser in the subject. By Sania Shah

French music is anything you want it to be, it can be rapid like “La Foule” by Youssoupha or slow like “On ne Change pas” by Céline Dion. It can also be pop like “Elle me dit” by Mika or foot tapping music like “Le Chemin de Pierre (version mixte)” by Nolwen Leroy. Another advantage of learning French that a lot of people overlook is its usage in Social Science for it includes a part of the French history such as French Revolution and Napoleonic wars which became a lot easier to understand as I had prior knowledge of the language and its culture. France and its rich gastronomic tradition has always been a very fascinating topic, especially for a food lover like me ! The very fact that France has more than 1,200 types of cheese and about 2,900 varieties of wine itself intrigued me. My interest in French food grew with the various activities we did in our French classes with Pooja ma’am. For instance we learnt about 15 new and exciting French recipes like la Salade Niçoise, le gratin Dauphinois, la Bouillabaisse and many more. To add on, I would like to say that learning the recipes wasn’t the end, in fact I went back home and actually tried a few recipes like la crème caramel and les crêpes. (The Caramel custard turned out very good but unfortunately I ended up eating a burnt pancake !) Below is a recipe of Mousse au Chocolat (Chocolate mousse) that I loved a lot and would recommend each one of you to try it. Ingrédients: 75g de chocolat (chocolate) 40g de sucre en poudre (powdered sugar) Une tasse de crème (1 cup of cream) Préparation: 1. Mettez le chocolat dans une casserole avec un peu d’eau. Faites cuire.(Place the chocolate in a casserole with a little water and cook) 2. Retirez du feu et laissez refroidir.(Remove from the heat and let it cool) 3. Ajoutez le sucre et la crème dans un bol et mélangez bien.(Add the sugar and cream to a bowl and mix well) 4. Ajoutez le mélange de sucre et de crème au chocolat et remuez bien pendant dix minutes. You might think France and India do not have a lot in common and you are completely right. But surprisingly they do have a few things in common. For example the language used in both the countries ie. French and Hindi have nouns and adjectives with genders which was difficult for me to comprehend and learn initially, but eventually I got a hang of it. I learnt a lot about French culture while studying French (mainly because it was worth 20 marks in the exam) but it was an enjoyable experience. I will always remember learning about French culture through portfolio assignments. When it came to the drawing assignments it was like a nightmare all thanks to the lack of Leonardo da Vinci skills in me. But folks that’s what made me learn better and at least the Victor Hugo in me survived. Pro tip : While learning about French culture, you’ll surely come across many bizarre facts. Did you know, the French relish snails and frogs? Did you know, the French students do part time jobs such as baby-sitting, helping with household chores etc. to earn their pocket money? And lastly some of the most memorable moments of my school life were during french class so if you get an opportunity to learn French, don’t hesitate and go for it! This is a line which will help you a lot if you are learning French: “Désolé Madame, J’ai oublié de faire mon devoir!” You can ask Pooja ma’am what that means. By Arjun Shivaramakrishnan

Well, deaths and illnesses are a reality now, But surely everyone will sail through this somehow. Morals are low, fear is high, These for sure are testing times and we may all sigh!!! If we can’t thank everyone who helped us get out of this mess, Atleast, let’s not add to their stress. We may have stocked enough food, we do wash our hands, But are we ready to take a stand? Are we ready to stay safe? Are we ready to be brave? Let’s believe that we will return to normalcy soon, Accept the current reality and have faith that happy days will change everyone’s fortune!! We went from meeting our friends everyday at school and learning face-to-face to staring at screens and little picture blocks instead of people. But this did not stop any of us from enjoying our classes and definitely did not prevent teachers from being innovative and making this year not just educational but also a memorable experience for us. It is astonishing to look back at a class of just 5 students and one teacher. We remembering it as one of the most interactive and fun-filled classes of the year. Nandita ma’am made the year 2020-21 not just an enriching experience but also created an atmosphere where we could express ourselves and our thoughts more freely. As the first batch of Sanskrit students appearing for the board exams, this year meant a lot not just to us but also to our Sanskrit teacher; and yet she never pressurised us and understood that the times we were going through were tough. This year being a crucial year, there are many thanks to be given to all the teachers who have helped us through it. Projects and other assignments were made much more creative and easy owing to the technology available to us at our fingertips. Her presentations and activities just made the class even more informative and enjoyable. She made sure to revisit topics that had already been covered in previous years to ensure an in-depth understanding of the topics. We offer our heartfelt thanks to all the teachers who put in innumerable effort and stood by our side throughout this rollercoaster ride! We are forever grateful to them. आचाय� देवो भवः

The Farm By Meher Mehta Grade 3 C When we visited the farm, The restless horse was calm. We thought it was a zoo, But there was a cow that did “moo!”. There was even a pig, Who was very fat and very big. He was really nice and pink, Who had a lot to think. There was also a very bright hen, Who lived in a humongous pen. There was a woolly little sheep, Who the farmer loved to keep. There was even a dog, Whose friend was a hedgehog! We loved visiting the farm, Because it was truly beautiful and calm.

This poem was selected as a part of the Guest illustrators’ Workshop conducted by Mr. Sudhir Shetty , Renowned Cartoonist working as the Asst Art Director at HT Media House. It was a 2day workshop arranged to expose students to the nuances of illustration. The illustration on this page are some of the student illustrators’ perspective for the poem . Farewell TSS By Lakshmi Vaid, Teacher TSS “Man’s feelings are always purest and most glowing in the hour of meeting and of farewell.” Jean Paul Richter It all began in the month of June 2015, when I walked into the school as a new employee beginning the journey with TSS. Time flew by and today I sit to reflect, 6 years is a long time, I have inhaled through the system and TSS has been a part of my heart. In the hustle bustle of the corridors, under the piles of notebooks, amidst the frenzy of activities and events, I lost my self here … and also where I found myself. It was an amazing journey of self-discovery and pushing my boundaries at every step. The ample opportunities to showcase my talents brought about the birth of the MUN Club, Pankh, the movie club and not to mention the Year magazine Maverick. Endless ideas were thought of; some got to see the day of light, some were left crumpled to their fate, but neither did I stop nor did the opportunities TSS gave me. The chalk dust will fade away memories, the duster will clean the slate for the new beginnings but what remains shall be the time I have spent here. To my team Maverick, I write this especially. Like all the mothers who find their child to be the most beautiful baby, for me it is Maverick. It was a baby which was handed to me in infancy, and now the time has come to wean it. Maverick was a journey of immense inventiveness, freedom, and creativity. Sometimes like holding a baby and watching it growing into a successful and fortunate child, I have shared the same emotions with Maverick, have been possessive about it and proud of it. I stand aside now - to see it grow. Here is wishing the new team immense creativity and endless ideas to make Maverick as unique and special as it is.

To my team MUN- a lot got culminated in the seed that was sowed, together we accomplished and reached milestones. I have always dreamt limitless success and ever-growing opportunities for victory for this MUN Club. Passion and diligence drove it and wish you all the same! To dear students, whom I have taught through whether online or offline –the classroom was always my arena where I played without inhibition; whether shared anecdotes from my life or contextualised their learning, I freely expressed myself, laughed and had fun and of course then learning became incidental. You all have been the greatest energy sources. Remember, in life it takes a lot to be able to give a teacher that place in your life that is cherished by her. The lovely letters you write, or just a simple thank you has been some of the greatest gifts of this journey with all of you. The smiles, the jokes, the feelings and above all the trust and the twinkle in your eyes always started my day right. You will be missed always. My colleagues – I will miss all the fun in the staff room and all the time I spent with all of you, whether the serious or the yet so serious and the not so serious talk – all with the same enthusiasm, the insignificant conversations, unintended banter those faulty decisions or the infectious laughter over the never-ending tea breaks. Wishing that all of you bring positivity and productivity in years to come. You guys are all a bunch of crazies ... keep that up because life is not serious – no one goes out of this alive (ha! ha!) enjoy life – its all about the journey and not the destination!
