Dweller's of Fisherman’s Flat, written by local resident Maggie Stowers, has been shortlisted for this year’s Victorian Community History Awards, as well as the prestigious Premier’s History Award. Using original images from families and the Queenscliffe Historical Museum collection and extracts from diaries, journals and ledgers, the book provides a unique perceptive of those who lived on the flat, from the Wadawurrung People to early fishing families. It also includes photographs and stories about women previously missing from the recorded histories of this area. The awards carry prizes ranging from $500 to $2000 – with one nominee to win the $5000 Premier’s History Award.  “This shortlist is a testament to the continuing effort of local historians, many of whom found inventive ways to share Victorian stories and programs remotely in 2020-21,” said Public Record Office Victoria Director Justine Heazlewood. Winners will be announced this month as part of History Month. CEO joins Climate Emergency body Queenscliffe CEO Martin Gill has been elected to the executive of Climate Emergency Australia. Established in June 2020, the group is a network of the 102 Australian local governments that have declared, acknowledged or recognised that we are in a state of climate emergency. According to Mr Gill, it had been created for local governments to work together on the climate emergency. “The key role of Climate Emergency Australia is to advocate and prepare campaign strategies on behalf of the local governments it represents. This advocacy is targeted at decision makers in Federal Government. Council’s role on Climate Emergency Australia furthers the advocacy objectives and action of the Borough of Queenscliffe Climate Emergency Response Plan,” he said.
