LIGULA MANGA No. 001 Missing my mom’s home-cooked meals an3d0 wondering why the cafeteria food can’t taste as good as it looks on Instagram. As a Vietnamese international student at the University of South Florida, one of the toughest things to adjust to has been the food situation. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate having a meal plan and not having to worry about cooking or grocery shopping. But when I see pictures of my mom’s home-cooked meals on Facebook, I can’t help but feel a little jealous. And don’t even get me started on the cafeteria food. But hey, it’s all part of the college experience, right? And at least I’ll have some good stories to tell when I’m 1back in Vietnam enjoying a proper bowl of pho. Struggling to understand my professors’ ac- 3 cents and wishing I had English subtitles in real life. One of the most challenging aspects of my college experience has been trying to deci- pher my professors’ accents. Sometimes it feels like I need subtitles just to keep up with the lecture. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grate- ful for the opportunity to learn from them, but there are moments when I just wish I had an interpreter. I guess you could say I’m hon- ing my language skills in more ways than one. 30
31 CHAPTER 001 3 Trying to stretch my budget to cov- 2 er tuition fees, rent, and Ramen noo- dles, and realizing that adulting is hard. Tuition fees, rent, textbooks, and every- day expenses can add up quickly, finan- cial challenges are the real deals for col- lege students, especially for those who are far away from home. And let’s not for- get about the Ramen noodles – a staple in any college student’s diet. I find myself constantly checking my bank account and trying to make my dollars stretch as far as possible. It’s a crash course in adulting, and it’s definitely not easy. But I know that the lessons I’m learning now about budgeting and financial responsibility will serve me well in the future. And hey, if all else fails, at least I know I can whip up a mean bowl of noodles.
LFIGeUeLlAinMAgNGAliNko.e001a criminal mastermind 432 when filling out visa and immigration forms, and wondering if my fingerprints will be used for a new CIA project. Filling out visa and immigration forms as an international student can be a daunting experience. I always feel like I’m walking on eggshells, trying to make sure every de- tail is correct. But amidst the stress, there’s a part of me that feels like a criminal mas- termind - providing the government with all this personal information, all while wondering if my fingerprints will be used for a new CIA project. It’s a weird feel- ing, but one that keeps things interesting. Spending hours on writing papers 5and getting a grade that makes me wonder if the professor actually read my essay or used it as a coaster. Ah, the joys of writing papers as an inter- national student. It’s not enough that we have to struggle through academic English, but then we spend hours crafting the per- fect essay, only to get a grade that makes us wonder if the professor actually read it or used it as a coaster for their morning coffee. Did they even understand the cul- tural references and examples we used? Or did they just skim through it, searching for errors to dock points for? The uncertain- ty can be frustrating, but it also keeps us on our toes, constantly striving to improve our writing skills and make our voices heard in this new academic environment. 32
33 Dealing with culture shock and reCHaAlPiTzEiRn0g01 that “Netflix and chill” doesn’t actually mean watching Netflix and relaxing on the couch. Moving to a new country is exciting, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges, includ- ing culture shock. As an international student, I quickly learned that the cultural norms and lan- guage used in everyday life can be vastly differ- ent from what I was used to in my home country. And while I thought I had a pretty good handle on American slang, I was in for a surprise when I first heard the phrase “Netflix and chill”. In Viet- nam, we might say “watching a movie and hang- ing out” to convey a similar idea, but “Netflix and chill” definitely has a different, more intimate connotation in the US. It’s just one example of 6how language and cultural differences can catch us off guard and leave us feeling a bit disorient- ed. But hey, it’s all part of the experience, right? 33
7LIGULA MANGA No. 001 As an international student without 3a4 car in Florida, I’ve become a pro at us- ing public transport, a connoisseur of sweating through clothes, and a master at begging for rides from my friends. Being a car-less international student in Florida is like being a fish with- out water. I’ve had to learn the ins and outs of public transportation, en- dure the sweltering heat on foot, and beg for rides from my few car-owning friends. But hey, at least I’m saving mon- ey on gas and getting some cardio in. As an international student, there are limitations on the number of hours you Acan work, and finding a job that fits into those hours can be challenging. Being an international student means having limitations on work hours, making it tough to find a job that fits 8the restrictions. It’s like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, and it can be frustrating. Scouring job boards is time-consuming, but hey, at least it counts as “job search” on your resume! 34
935 Feeling lonely during theCHAPThERo0l0i1- days, a not so uncommon “activity“ As an international student, I sometimes feel like a character in a Hallmark mov- ie: all alone in my dorm room, scroll- ing through Instagram posts of people back home having a blast. I try to con- sole myself with the fact that I’m sav- ing money on expensive airfare, but it’s not easy. At least I get to indulge in my guilty pleasure of eating turkey-shaped chocolates while binge-watching Friends during Thanksgiving break. Struggling with the job hunt hustle because of the immigration status. Finding full-time employment can be incredibly daunting. Even with impressive academic credentials and work experience, I often find myself struggling to secure a job due to limited opportunities and a narrow pool of companies willing to sponsor my OPT/CPT visa. It’s frustrating to know that my immigration status is the reason for my limited job search. But with resilience, determination, and creativi- ty, I am confident that we will overcome this obstacle and achieve our career aspira- 10tions. 35
