Heading in the right direction... sometimes! There has been a real increase in the skills of conceiving, implementing and delivering culinary services in Indonesia over the last ten years, led by Jakarta and Bali but with some notable hot spots elsewhere. Why? Probably because of competition and certainly because of communication and the two are very much linked. You cannot just start a restaurant now without expecting serious competition within the locale you are operating in - and in the genre - often both! And people talk! Not only do they talk they also tweet, post and message, and a lot of it is about food. There must be 200 million food photos in the ether - most of them from Indonesia! So tough competition improves standards and communication reinforces who is doing things well and who is doing things not so well! That’s why we made this competition and made it open and transparent so that everyone can see - and judge for themselves - who is doing well and is winning the hearts (and wallets!) of Jakarta’s diners. Congratulations to all the restaurants who competed and all the diners who voted, you stand a chance of some good prizes - courtesy of Qatar Airways who have come in to make these awards really fly... and you fly too! So the industry is really heading in the right direction but what is the government thinking? To effect an outright ban on alcohol would kill this industry - and tourism - stone dead within months, and honestly, the minuses outweigh the plusses by, well a thousand to one. So let’s hope this is just a misguided step that will lead nowhere and we can continue to develop our wonderful dining scene undisturbed. Congratulations to all. Alistair G. Speirs.
