“Enhancing business and personal performance by using brain science” WHAT DOES PRISM DO?The role of PRISM Brain Mappingis to explain behaviour in termsof the activities of the brain -how it marshals its billions ofindividual nerve cells to producebehaviour, and how those cellsare influenced by theenvironment. “Enhancing business and personal performance by using brain science” THE BRAIN AND BEHAVIOURPRISM Brain Mapping is based onthe unchallengeable fact that thebrain is the source of all humanbehaviour. Everything we knowabout the world around us,including what we know about ourown bodies, comes from our brain. It processes all this informationand chooses the appropriateresponses (behaviours). “Enhancing business and personal performance by using brain science” NEUROSCIENCE AND PSYCHOLOGYPRISM and psychometric instruments stem from twodifferent sciences and direct comparison is akin tocomparing apples and oranges; they have somefactors in common, but also some very fundamentaldifferences. Copyright: The Center for Applied Neuroscience 2002
“Enhancing business and personal performance by using brain science” WHY PRISM IS DIFFERENT - 1‘Plasticity’ is the neuroscience term for the brain’s ability to change. At one time, it was believed, and widely taught, that the adult brain could not change once a certain level of development had occurred. This ‘cradle to the grave’ approach taken by many traditional psychometric tests is now impossible to sustain in the light of neuroscience discoveries. Your brain is physically different today from how it was yesterday. That difference results from the effect of yesterday’s and today’s experiences, as well as the thoughts and feelings that you have entertained during the past 24 hours. “Enhancing business and personal performance by using brain science” WHY PRISM IS DIFFERENT - 2Adapting behaviour: Brain research hasshown that people function best when theyare able to make the most of their naturalpreferences and abilities. Adaptingbehaviour is the extent to which the personfeels it necessary to modify their naturalbehavioural preferences on occasions whendealing with day-to-day life e.g. when theyare at work. By comparing how the personprefers to behave and the extent to whichhe or she sometimes modifies thatbehaviour, the PRISM system can calculatehow the person consistently tends tobehave most of the time. “Enhancing business and personal performance by using brain science”WHY PRISM IS DIFFERENT - 3Dichotomous profiling. The BEHAVIOUR IS NOTinadequacies of dichotomous(contradictory) views of behaviour have EITHER – ORlong been recognized. Despite thebest intentions of test publishers, manypsychological instruments are used todescribe people in terms of “either/or”e.g. Introvert v Extrovert. PRISM showsthat human behaviour is not“either/or”, and that people can, anddo, exhibit opposite behaviours. Forexample, the way in which peoplebehave at home is often very differentfrom they way they behave at work.
“Enhancing business and personal performance by using brain science” BEWARE OF LABELSOne problem with many profilinginstruments is that they can be used, deliberately, or unwittingly, to putpeople into hard and fixed categorieswhich often make those individualslabelled, typecast or judged. It appearsa simple matter to communicatethrough labelling. Labels are often notonly misleading shortcuts, but alsothey can create resentment, thusdistancing us from others, includingwork colleagues and customers. “Enhancing business and personal performance by using brain science” WHY YOU SHOULD USE PRISM\"I have been working with PRISM for over 6 years in totally differentbusinesses. It is, quite simply, the most effective and versatile profilingtool I have ever come across. In recruitment, one of the most common failings is to mismatcha person to the behavioural requirements of the job. PRISMallows you to avoid that pitfall completely. It is also a powerfultool when coaching individuals because it provides insights forexploration which are not always obvious to the coachee, particularly in the area of un-tapped potential and this hasproved really useful for developing talent. Finally, the ease and speed of use is a major benefit, coupledwith the quality of reports and value for money it provides. Iwould certainly recommend the use of PRISM to any business orHR professional.\" Brian Benneyworth FCIPD FIoD MCIH Group HR Director Member of the Membership and Professional Development Committee The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development Board.
