WHY PRISM IS DIFFERENT - 1‘Plasticity’ is the neuroscience term for the brain’sability to change. At one time, it was believed, andwidely taught, that the adult brain could not changeonce a certain level of development had occurred.This ‘cradle to the grave’ approach taken by manytraditional psychometric tests is now impossible tosustain in the light of neuroscience discoveries.Your brain is physically different today from how itwas yesterday. That difference results from theeffect of yesterday’s and today’s experiences, aswell as the thoughts and feelings that you haveentertained during the past 24 hours.

WHY PRISM IS DIFFERENT - 2Adapting behaviour: Brain research hasshown that people function best when theyare able to make the most of their naturalpreferences and abilities. Adaptingbehaviour is the extent to which the personfeels it necessary to modify their naturalbehavioural preferences on occasionswhen dealing with day-to-day life e.g. whenthey are at work. By comparing how theperson prefers to behave and the extent towhich he or she sometimes modifies thatbehaviour, the PRISM system cancalculate how the person consistentlytends to behave most of the time.

WHY PRISM IS DIFFERENT - 3Dichotomous profiling. The BEHAVIOUR IS NOTinadequacies of dichotomous EITHER – OR(contradictory) views of behaviour havelong been recognized. Despite the bestintentions of test publishers, manypsychological instruments are used todescribe people in terms of “either/or”e.g. Introvert v Extrovert. PRISM showsthat human behaviour is not “either/or”,and that people can, and do, exhibitopposite behaviours. For example, theway in which people behave at home isoften very different from they way theybehave at work.

BEWARE OF LABELSOne problem with many profilinginstruments is that they can be used,deliberately, or unwittingly, to putpeople into hard and fixed categorieswhich often make those individualslabelled, typecast or judged. Itappears a simple matter tocommunicate through labelling.Labels are often not only misleadingshortcuts, but also they can createresentment, thus distancing us fromothers, including work colleaguesand customers.
