Updates Veterinary Association about Equine Microchipping in Jamaica Dr. Sophia Ramlal, Senior Veterinarian at Jamaica Racing Commission, was among a slate of international presenters at the recently held 32nd Conference of the Caribbean Veterinary Medical Association (CbVMA). The topic of her presentation was \"Harnessing the Benefits of Equine Microchipping. JRC is the equine microchip register for race horses in Jamaica. Since 2007, microchipping has been a requirement for all horses racing in Jamaica, replacing lip tattooing. The chips used are smaller than a rice grain and are implanted in the neck of the horse. Implantation is done exclusively by JRC vets. Each microchip has a unique 15digit (numeric) code which included the Ja country code (388) and is also used to determine equine temperature. The chip information is transmitted by radio-frequency detection technology and is detected by scanning the neck of the horse. The chips are non-migratory, incapable of being manipulated externally and remain detectable for the life of most horses. The microchips used for horses are approximately the size of rice grain. Implantation, done exclusively by JRC Vets, is performed on the left side of the neck of the horse.
