From the Editor… The month of October is celebrated as the Economic and community development month by Rotary. Each and every Citizen of India strives to earn a better economic status for himself. But does this urge grow out from oneself and finds shape in society? Sounds sensible right? The growth of a community be it economical or ethical, highly depends on the individual contribution. This contribution must be natural and not forced. As ‘Little drops make the mighty ocean’, ‘every penny counts to a crore’ so is every small act of deed. The urge of this service which sparks from within is capable of brining wonders in the community one lives in. We, The Rotaract Club of Coimbatore Vadavalli, have taken a step forward in this mission and have been accomplishing events towards this mission. As Vivekanandha says, “All the power is within you. You can do anything”, we believe in that urge as the power to achieve our goals for the betterment of this community. I assure that you’ll get to taste that essence of service when u dive in through this bulletin. Have a great read!! - Rtr. Candida Heissel A Director of Publications 2

Vice – President’s Voice Rtr. Balaji I am Rtr. Balaji, the Vice President of the club. First of all, I'm very proud to be Rotaractor and happy to be a part of Rotaract Club of Coimbatore Vadavalli. I can't even imagine the day I joined in the club to being a vice president now. It's almost been 2 years of being a part in our club. I've learned a lot and changed myself. Every change happened to me with love and support from my club members who always used to encourage and support in all situations. My favourite thing in our club is the bond that everyone share as their own brothers & sisters. I feel like home when I stick around with our club members. In this year 2021-2022, I've thought of making some changes within our club but the growth is going like peak and it feels so good to see our club in this stage. Lets keep rocking as always, Vadavallians! As my president says \"There won't be any inactive members in this year\" let's be positive & hope for the best year. 3

World Food Day 16th October October 16, every year, is celebrated as World Food Day to mark the founding of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, which was established on the same day in 1945. The main goal of World Food Day is to promote the message that food is a basic and fundamental human right. In line with this objective, the day aims at promoting awareness about food, nutrition, and healthy eating practices across the world and urges people to take action against world hunger and unfair allocation of resources. The theme for this year’s World Food Day is, “Our actions are our future. Better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life.” The food we choose and the way we consume it affect our health and that of our planet. It has an impact on the way agri-food systems work, says a statement by FAO. 4

Hunger In India The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2- Zero Hunger aims to end all forms of malnutrition, including stunting and wasting in children under five years of age by 2030 and address the nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women, and older persons. According to The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World, 2020 report by FAO, 189.2 million Indians or 14 per cent of the total population in India are undernourished. Furthermore, 51.4 per cent of women in reproductive age between 15 to 49 years are anaemic in India. The report also states that 34.7 percent of the children aged under five in India are stunted (too short for their age), while 20 per cent suffer from wasting, meaning their weight is too low for their height. Report underlines the fact that malnourished children have a higher risk of death from common childhood illnesses such as diarrhoea, pneumonia, and malaria. 5

Fable of the High Seat A major part of my day in the first year of College life was commuting to college using public transport. 3 whole hours of a day, observing different kinds of people, while holding on for dear life during the rush hours. Like most colleges, my college is situated on a bustling highway where everyone is in a rush to reach places. Picture a buzzing road with plenty of signals, hospitals and colleges. The kind of road that they would show if they are introducing a city in a movie, imagine a narrator saying \"This is Bangalore!!\" or \"Yeh hain apna Mumbai!!\" or \"Ithu thaa namma Chennai!!\" They'd show this road for my city. Traffic moves at a snail's pace and even though everybody's in a rush, nobody seems to move. How would you if 20 buses are standing at a signal? I spend a lot of time struggling with my entangled earphones while my friend uses my shoulder as a pillow. We always sit on the highest seat so that he can either doze off on my shoulder or on the \"very clean\" high window of the bus. Sitting on the highest seat has its own benefits. 1) The bus doesn't launch you into space when it goes over a bump, 2) They are mostly empty because people are scared of tearing a hole in their pants trying to reach it. (Good thing my jeans are stretchable) 3) You get a full view of the bus and you can observe people. It isn't all roses and chocolates though, there are certain things you would encounter. Getting into that spot is easy but stand up 6

vigorously, and the next morning you would find a mound of pain protruding from your head. 2) People will use your legs as seats or bag stands. This happens a lot when school children barge in and hit you in the head with their large and heavy rucksacks. Then with sheer innocence, they will ask you to hold onto their bags until their stops come. Once the bag has been unloaded on your legs, they will proceed to chatter and exhibit stunts inside the crowded bus. A conductor is another person who would position himself on your knee while performing database management with his fingers. You are tempted to look inside his leather bag of riches even though you know there would only be bundles of 10 rupee notes. Yes, we have all peeped. Now the transport corporation has replaced all the old, majestic buses with flashy red ones which have the seats at the same height. These new buses don't have the personality of the old ones. Their puny new horn reminds me of a new born child who hasn't seen the world yet. The old ones with the raunchy horn and vibrant orange signs remind me of grandpas waiting to tell you stories. Well, the high seats are gone and all that remain are memories of my long legs hitting the front seat… 7 - Rtr. Rahul B Nair

Find of the Month Born in Pazhangarai, a small hamlet in Tirupur district, Mr. Balusamy S was born in a family with high farming background. He attended a local school for his primary and secondary education. Owing to the financial struggles faced by his family, He decided to stop his education when he was doing his 7th grade and started to work as a labour in a Mr. S Balusamy private garment factory. Switching his workplace to a garment and a vessel vending store, He always stayed focused in what He was Proprietor –SRV Knits determined to do. His desire even at that young age was to raise to an and Exports independent business magnet someday. He also developed the qualities like simplicity, tonnes of hardwork towards every work committed and sheer straight- forwardness. These innate characters developed has brought him to the height of being the founder and Proprietor of SRV Knits and exports, Tirupur where around 500+ workers are employed. His career graph in the field has grown from renting a godown for his factory to establishing his own units in three own places now. When enquired what the reason for his success is, he replied with a gentle smile, “ Its nothing but trust; The trust the labours have on the management, the trust the management has on me and the 16

trust I owe back to these people”. He often recognized the seamless work and unity among the workers and their commitment towards the firm. He neither cares about the future nor worries about the happenings of the past rather believes in making wonders in the present. He dates back to memories where he has worked more than 16 hours a day and would still strike the workplace with full of enthusiasm the following day. He also was reminded of the golden political days of Dr. Narasimarao, the then Prime minister of India who formulated a new policy to improve exports and thereby the financial status of districts in Tamilnadu namely, Tirupur, Karur and those of the southern belt. He firmly believed that growth of Tirupur was only because of the new policy which stated “jdpahH ikak;;;> jhuhs ikak;”. He also holds an important position in the Tirupur’s Exporters Association. I was very much awe struck by the way he spoke about all the political leaders and his idealogy towards each action that were performed by them. He is a passionate reader who would read the newspaper completely from head to toe. He also listed a number of books written by Karl Marx, Rustle Bond and few international authors to my surprise. His favourite book is jpUf;Fws;> which he would gift to every person. He believes that education is the only tool in the world that could find solution to every problem that arises. Though he was deprived of education, He has played a very major in ugrading the three secondary schools to higher secondary school in Perumanallur belt. His approaches towards inculcating education in the younger generation definitely requires huge applause. He firmly believes in the youth of today to make more wonders and make 17

this Earth a better place to live in. His one advice to young entrepreneurs and budding business magnets is “Believe in what you do and trust the process. Hard work and determination will never mislead”. He being an optimistic and person with full of vigor hopes the best from the upcoming generation. “Today’s younger generation who have the facility of conquering any part of the world, must try to be better version of themselves everyday. When given an opportunity, they should never fail to prove themselves. Only then, they can make them sustainable in any field they choose to work”, he said. His knowledge be it on any recent issue or old history is something that we all should learn to acquire and treasure. He is a man who respects education and believes that learning has no barrier of age. We, The Rotaract Club of Vadavalli feel immensely elated in featuring him as the ‘ Find of the Month’. We salute his hardwork and determination and wish him best of luck for his future ventures. 18
