Motifs of the One-eyed Goblin that likes to eat a lot and the Food Monsters (inspired by popular Korean street foods and dishes) used in the banner design. Adapting the colour palette and linework style of the curated moodboard as seen later on.

DOKKAEBI (도깨비) also known as Korean Goblins, are DOK mythical creatures found in the Korean folklore. Known to be KAE mischievous in nature, they reward the good and enjoy playing BI mean tricks on the bad. Formed through the spiritual possession of inanimate objects such as old discarded household tools like brooms or objects stained with human blood, the Dokkaebis do not have an actual form. People divide them into types with different character traits: Cham (Michievous), Gae (Evil), Gim Seobang (Dumb and looks like a farmer), Nat (Appear in the day), Go (Good at fighting and handling weapons), Gaksi (Attract humans), Oenun (One-eyed and eats a lot), Oedari (One-eyed and likes to play Korean folk wrestling).

The various types of this mythical creature and the vibrant artwork by Korean illustrator Dayoung Cho based on the Oenun Dokkaebi sparked the idea to have my banner design be a take on the same Dokkaebi. Conveying the creature type to be fun and quirky instead of scary. I was going for a cute-grotesque style. With this, the idea of the Dokkae-blin was birthed. Dokkaebi Food Truck by Dayoung Cho

early explorations An inital exploration of the Dokkaebi as depicted on roof tiles to see how I am able to interpret it into the One-eyed Dokkaebi. Based on images of the mythical creature found online, an adaptation to make the creature look less scary than its original look. I rounded the sharp edges of its original features and reduced the details to make it look more simplified. Colour wise was to go way more vibrant.

Another exploration was to use popular Korean foods as motifs for the banner design with the cute-grotesque concept in mind. With the Oneun Dokkaebi’s characteristic of eating a lot, I felt that using these foods would complement the Korean roots of the mythology. Integrating the features of the Dokkaebi being one-eyed into the various Korean foods to form character-liked motifs which were later on refined to the Food Monsters as seen in the banner.

inspiration & Colours The moodboard for Dokkaeblin consists of organic linework and a vibrant/pastel colour palette while staying true to the colours of the Korean foods and dishes
