Vertical Gardens Raise the bar... There is nothing more beautiful than seeing a sea of flowers in your garden but if you don’t have room for traditional garden beds, why not grow your flowers upwards by using vertical gardening. Here are our tips to help you get the most flowers possible, so that you are looking out onto a hanging oasis. Fertilizing is the Key To help your plants to thrive and thus produce the maximum amount of flowers, you need to make sure that you keep the nutrients up. Depending on the type of vertical garden you have, this can be as simple as adding slow release fertiliser to the soil. Otherwise, if your garden uses mainly water, you can mix nutrient solutions in the water to ensure that your flowers are well fed. Locate the Vertical Garden Correctly Plants need plenty of sunlight to flower properly but at the same time, you don’t want them to have too much sunlight as the plants may get too hot and the soil will dry out. Look for a wall that gets around six hours of full sunlight a day if possible - a north or north easterly aspect is ideal. If you don’t have an ideal wall, make sure that you select plants that can handle the amount of sunlight that the wall gets, as well as the amount of heat that the wall reflects. homeimprovementpages.com Vertical Gardens Magazine spread

& Your Green Thumb Perform Maintenance Regularly While vertical gardening is one of the lowest maintenance forms of gardening, there are some tasks that you will still need to do in order to maximise flowering. The first is dead heading – removing flowers once that have started to wilt and die. Doing this will encourage more flowers to grow. After each flowering season, you should also prune your plants back according to instructions given with your plants. If your plants are annuals, you will likely have to replace them yearly – keep this in mind when selecting them. Choose the Right Types of Plants If you are growing a vertical garden for the primary purpose of getting lots of flowers, it is worth taking the time to select your plants carefully. Your first consideration should be to choose flowering plants that are likely to thrive in your garden’s aspect. The next is to consider the plant’s root system -- you don’t want something that is too vigorous or that develops a large root system. Some flowering plants that do really well in vertical gardens include climbing roses, miniature roses, petunias, marigolds, pansies, sweet pea, nasturtiums, jasmine, wisteria, daisies and so on. Also try and group together plants that have similar watering requirements as this will make keeping the plants healthy so much easier.

HerA DAY IN S H O E S An Interview with art director, Andrea Wagner HILARY SANS Your face to face with someone who’s shoes you would love to walk in, what do you say? What would you ask them? Throughout your lifetime, you meet a vast variety of people. Some that you come across just fade in and drift out, but some that you come across make an impact in your life. Recently, I went on an adventure to find someone that I could learn from in hopes to bettering my future. I wanted to collect information that wouldn’t just sit in the back of my head, but information that I could really utilize and make great use of. Who would have thought that a conversation like this could have taken pace at a coffee shop? I met Andrea Wagner, an art director, at Starbuck’s for a talk about how she got to where she is today and what I could do to achieve the most out of the world of design. There it was in front of me, Starbuck’s cafe. I was plenty early waiting with two coffees in hand, in order to make a great impression. While waiting, I was gathering my thoughts of what to say when the guest of honor arrived. I was so sure that I would know who she was as soon as I saw her walk through those cafe doors. After waiting patiently for about fifteen minutes I took a sip from my coffee and then glanced up to see a sharp pair of heels clicking toward me. Those shoes were so clean cut with 34 Opportunity Magazine “A Day in Her Shoes” Magazine spread

Those shoes had to fit no other position than that of an art director an edginess to them. No other shoes like that would be found on someone casual or someone average. Those shoes had to fit no other position than that of an art director, Art director Andrea Wagner to be exact. The heels approached me and stopped briskly as I said “Andrea?”, and by the bright look in her face I knew that it was her. I was more than ready to soak up every word. Choked up? I was a bit nervous, of course. I’d never been face to face with someone who lived a lifestyle that I could see myself living one day. I was excited and eager, and I didn’t know where to start. The coffee! Offer her the coffee, I thought quickly in my head. A bit shaky, I spilt my own coffee luckily missing my clean, white, button-up shirt. What a great start, let’s hop this didn’t lead to a spiral of my own mishaps. I laughed it off and she also found the humor in my little calamity. From there, the “brain picking” began. There was no heavy-handed moment of silence from the time we sat down and for the next forty five minutes. She was full of guidance for my amateur mind, and organized with her thoughts. At first I didn’t know if I’d design the right questions to ask her or if I could even spit out the words in appropriate A Day in Her Shoes 35

Marimba “A percussion instrument with wooden bars tuned to produce a chromatic scale and with resonators; played with small mallets” Synonyms: marimba, xylophone The creaTion The marimba is also known as the xylophone, which received its name from the Greek word xylon, meaning “wood”, and the word phone, meaning “sound”. It is an ancient instrument that originated in Africa and Asia. Wooden bars were originally seated on a series of hollow reeds, which generated the notes that are produced on modern instruments by metal tubes. For centuries, xylophone makers struggled with methods of tuning the wooden bars. Old methods consisted of arranging the bars on tied bundles of straw, and, as still practiced today, placing the bars adjacent to each other in a ladder-like layout. sound Tools 2000 BC 15 Through the evolution of the xylophone there had also developed many different types of mallets as well although there are three main materials that have become the most used today. Each material used creates a different sound vibration depending on the hardness or density of the material. Marimba Inforgraphic design

Bodyevery portrays the MIND by Hilary Sans Every Body We all seem to live our lives day to day without giving recognition to the simplest things that we should all be grateful for. When we roll out of bed and look in Article Layout the mirror we usually never think twice about how lucky we are to be alive. The body that we live in is one of the most essential gifts that we are given in our lives. I cherish the body that I was given because I know that it is the shell of who I am inside and I know that it will show on the outside as well. My body is what I am most grateful for because it is the key to showing how I feel, it keeps me motivated to live my life to it’s fullest , and it has helped me excel in most of the things that I love to do and want to gain. In this body I feel that there are no limitations of what I can accomplish. When you see someone smile, you know that they feel moved by something. When someone gives you a hug, you know that they care. These are only a couple of reasons that I love my body. I feel as though with it I am able to show people how I really feel without even having to use words. Our bodies are how we communicate and build relationships with everyone we come in counter with. They are the silent poems and the visual understandings between one another. The relationships that I have been able to build have all carved the path to who I am today, and this is a journey that I never want to take for granted. Without having awareness of the health that your body is in, how can one reach all levels of who you truly are? When I feel comfortable with my body, it is easier for me to keep a comfortable mindset in the moments that mean the most. It helps me reach all of my potential to do better, and always keep moving forward in my search to finding who I am and where I want to go in my lifetime. I am constantly striving for that perfect connection between mind and body, and to keep it consistent. My body shows where I have been in my life and where I came from.
