What is Slipform? Slipforms are a temporary works self climbing formwork system and they are a specialist sub contractor activity within that sector of operations. For service cores traditional forming methods are achieved with crane lift options, self climbing options or simple traditional systems cast from each floor slab as it cycles. Whichever method is adopted the fundamental process of casting the concrete is the same. Slipforming is different, it does not cast concrete, it extrudes it. When used correctly it is presently the fastest method of constructing in-situ vertical concrete structures available on the market. However, this is not its only advantage, in simplistic terms Slipform offers the principles and benefits of single sided formwork, steel formwork shutters, self climbing formwork, more controllable concrete pour heights to enable improved placement control and most important of all one of the safest methods ofconstructing vertical cores for low to high rise structures. The fundamental principles of Slipform enable the concrete to be poured within the formwork shutter whilst the system is relocating itself in the vertical plane. As the concrete is placed, in accordance with the required placing technique, a staggered set time is created through the pour height enabling the concrete to achieve initial set at the base of the formwork shutter whilst remaining fluid at the top. The Slipform \"slide\" is commenced and maintained to expose the concrete beneath the bottom of the shutter as it reaches initial set, ie in a state where it can retain its own shape and support the wet concrete on top of it. From developments in Slipform design and relocation mechanisms the modern day Slipforms can be used on a multitude of structures and are no longer restricted to pure monolithic profiles. The traditional concept of working the Slipform 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, is still considered appropriate on silos and chimneys, however, developments in methodology have resulted in discontinuous Slipforming techniques proving to be of most benefit when Slipfonns are utilised for service core construction.
