Preserving Alabama’s natural resources starts in our backyard. Did you know longleaf pines are home to roughly 120 endangered or threatened plant and animal species? That’s why Alabama Power is working hard to help them grow. We’ve teamed up with partners across our state to preserve the natural resources that make Alabama a great place to put down roots – especially if you’re a longleaf pine. Lakeshore West The golf cart Fourth of July holiday parade at the Lakeshore West Community was a big success. Approximately 20 golf carts/utv’s, two bicycles, and one motorized skateboard were in attendance. The event was organized by Smith Lake residents Jean- nie and Richard Kessinger, with the start of the pa- rade lining up at their home. Attendees had a great time driving patriot themed carts throughout the neighborhood. Residents that were not in the pa- rade lined up along the roadway decked out in “God Bless America” attire and waved flags. After the parade, residents gathered to have snacks, food, and beverages, and listen to music late into the night. Even a Cullman sheriff deputy attend- ed the event to meet residents. Plans are already underway for next year’s celebration! g hSmith Lake Livingtm Betty Taylor 95 years young- made the parade with son Ty Taylor driving. 62 | smithlakeliving.com

“Smith Lake ... is a Lake for All” By Kristine Bullock We are living in a time now, more than ever, where people are seeking common ground. Deep rifts can be found in the social, political, and economic landscapes of our country, that a deep yearning can be felt for unity and peace. It is not unrealistic to think that Smith Lake can offer a pocket of solitude for those needing refuge from the unrest that is currently troubling our nation. Lewis Smith Lake was created in 1961 by the Alabama Power Company, and is one of the largest earth and rock filled dams in the Eastern United States. It was named in honor of Lewis Martin Smith, who was president of the Alabama Power Company from 1952 to 1957. The project cost $29 million dollars, and was thought to create a new source for electricity, a new recreational asset, better navigation downstream, and an additional source of drinking and industrial water for homes and businesses in Birmingham. Smith Lake is 35 miles long, and has 642 miles of shoreline. Until the 1980s, the land bordering the lake remained relatively undeveloped. In the past thirty years, the lake’s beauty has generated an increase in both residential and commercial development, and its recreational attractions compel people to visit from all over the country. Now, Smith Lake is a place that can be shared by people from all walks of life. Anglers, kayakers, boaters, water enthusiasts, swimmers, and campers can all enjoy Smith lake for everything it has to offer. Smith lake has become a place where everybody has something in common, and its beauty and magnifi- cence creates an atmosphere that we can all call home. g hSmith Lake Livingtm smithlakeliving.com I 65

The annual 4th of July Celebrations - Fredricks Outdoor at Devil’s Branch ! The Rock the Boat 2020 concert and fireworks show hosted by Fredricks Outdoor at Devil’s Branch Smith Lake was one event that did not get cancelled this summer. Attendees enjoyed the music of Par- malee and Lee Gibson from their boats, as well as an impressive firework show which followed. The boat flotilla was made up of single boats with individual groups to abide by the ADPH Safer at Home order. This fun annual event is a draw for lake folks to enjoy good music and fun times in a laid-back environ- g hment. Look for details for next year’s sixth annual 4th of July event.. CHURCH ON SMITH LAKE Church on Smith Lake happens every Sunday at 8 a.m. at the Lakeside Pavilion Smith Lake RV Resort located at 800 County Road 202, Crane Hill, AL. At- tendance has recently increased because the service offers the ability for people to be outdoors and social distance. Greg Aldridge, the pastor at Church on Smith Lake, remarks, “I can see a church without walls growing and expanding. Having a core group come together to get the word out is the answer to increasing attendance”. Lar- ry and Sandy Harris are the owners of the Smith Lake RV Resort, and have challenged Aldridge to begin preaching at Church on Smith Lake for many years. “I believe it was orchestrated by God”, Aldridge shares. Aldridge is from the eastside of Cull- man, and attended Fairview High School. He met his wife through a singing group at his church. “I reached out for the advice of elder men and women, and yielded to the spirit of God to become a pastor”. Aldridge shares, “I think a lot of people are seeking God, and I told Larry and Sandy to not get ahead of God. Let God open doors. If we try to manufacture it, it’s going to be of man and it’s not going to bear fruit for the kingdom”. Church on Smith Lake hopes to see you in worship Sunday morning. g hSmith Lake Livingtm Greg Aldrigde - Pastor smithlakeliving.com I 75
