Rules of the Waterway – It Just Saves Lives By Casey Williams The summer boating season is once again in full swing on Smith Lake, and it never hurts to be remind-ed about a few common, but often broken boating laws. A quick refresher for all of us can help ensure a saferboating season for the entire lake community. Just like driving a vehicle on the road, boats are also required by law to keep on the right-hand side ofthe waterway. Smith Lake has many points that jet out into the channels, and if a boat is coming around on thewrong side (left side), then it could be head-on with another vessel traveling on the correct side of the water-way. Even though there is no yellow line running down the middle of the lake, like on a highway, you shouldstay to the right side of the waterway and help to avoid collisions. One of the most commonly broken boating laws at Smith Lake is the use of proper lighting. First of all, while a boat is underway, the only lights that should be in use are the red, green, and white 360 degree naviga-tion lights that are required at sunset and in rainy, low-light conditions. No other lights, including novelty bluelights, are legal by state and U.S. Coast Guard law. Use of these kinds of novelty lights reduces other boaters’ability to see objects besides your boat in the dark-ness. Trooper Williams has seen multiple crashesinto docks and other boats because the drivers’night vision was impaired by unnecessary and ille-gal novelty lights. Boaters need to also be aware and be courte-ous about the wake they are creating, even in areasthat are not designated no-wake zones. One of themost common complaints on Smith Lake and allAlabama waterways is the creation of hazardousand discourteous wake. Please be mindful of others’docks and other property when you are boating. No one wants to have their dock and shorelinedisturbed by unnecessary wake. Keeping these fewsimple but important laws in mind, we can all havea safer boating season. g hSmith Lake Livingtm smithlakeliving.com I 7

The House Once Forgotten By Kristine Bullock While it might seem strange to talk about a house as a character ina legend or fairytale, the story of the beautiful home that sits on the mainchannel of the Sipsey River is just that. A once abandoned home whichlay vacant apart from the woodland creatures and overgrown forest whichsurrounded it becoming transformed into a little piece of paradise can belikened to a real estate Cinderella story. If the walls could talk, the mysteriesthat lay behind the unprecedented tale of why this house was left in disrepairwould be revealed. It takes a lot of bravery to breathe life into a beautifullyforgotten home, but that is exactly what Cary and Brian DeWitte dared toachieve. They chose to restore this home to preserve its place on the re-markable shoreline of Smith Lake, and continue writing the chapters of thisrealty fairytale. Brian and Cary both grew up in Michigan. They were brought to SmithLake in 1996 when Brian began subcontracting for a company in Birming-ham. Their weekends became filled with trips to the lake, and the magneticquality of the miles of shoreline and immaculate waters drew them in andwrote on their hearts that they would one day call Smith Lake their home.In 2000, Brian was offered a full time job in Birmingham, and they boughttheir first property in 2001. Since then, they have helped to restore severalhomes on the water. However, the once forgotten home on the Sipsey Riverwas never far from their minds. They would frequently wonder what the storywas about the vacant house, so when it became available they jumped onthe opportunity and put in an offer. Tax records revealed that the property was purchased in 1976. Con-struction began in the early 80’s but wasn’t completed until 1988. For rea-sons unknown, the house sat vacant from 2013 until Brian and Cary didtheir initial walk through prior to purchase in August 2017. The power andwater had been shut off, and there had been no signs of life aside from the Continued on Page 16 14 | smithlakeliving.com

animals that came to inhabit the home. They began restoring the property immediately after closing pa- pers were signed, and finished in April of this year. The home required complete renovation. Interest- ingly, the house actually sits in a floodplain. So while it may have been more economical to tear down the existing home and build a new one, they would have had to elevate the home, which is something Brian and Cary did not want to do. The renovated property is 3000 square feet finished with two master bedrooms with ensuite baths. There are also two additional bedrooms, a full bathroom, full loft, and an unfinished basement. The home sits on 570 feet of shoreline with views of the water from every room. One of the most idyllic aspects of the house is the pavilion that Brian and Continued on Page 18 Cary & Brian DeWitte16 | smithlakeliving.com

On Sunday, July 1st, Fredricks Outdoor will hold their third annual “Rock the Boat”event, a free concert on the water in Devil’s Branch, right here on beautiful Smith Lake. The event welcomesold friends and “hick hop” group The LACs for an evening of music, fun, and fireworks. A marine and power equipment dealer based in Priceville, Alabama, Fredricks Outdoor has alsobecome a concert venue, holding events twice per year — one in the spring and one in the fall — and bring-ing such artists as The Charlie Daniels Band, Montgomery Gentry, 38 Special, and many more to entertainneighbors at their store on Bethel Road. Event admission has always been inexpensive. In fact, you can getin to any of their Priceville concerts for free if you’re wearing Fredricks Outdoor apparel to the event. The ap-parel, which consists of an assortment of branded t-shirts and hats, can be purchased in their store and hasa lifetime warranty. Tom Fredricks, proprietor of Fredricks Outdoor, wanted a way to give back to the Smith Lake com-munity and show his thanks. So, in July of 2016, Fredricks Outdoor expanded their concert offering to theirsecond home on Smith Lake, with a concert event they called “Rock the Boat”. Using a shoreline pavilionas a stage, the casual event would be free to anyone that had access to a boat. Just drop anchor and enjoythe show. The event was a success and received some great community feedback. They added live video ontheir LED digital display the following year, allowing the entire audience a front-row view of the show, frompractically any vantage point in the slough. This year, the fun continues, withThe LACs and a few of their friends return-ing to provide music from 4:00 PM to 8:00PM on Sunday, July 1st, with a professionalfireworks display to follow. As always, theconcert is free to the public and viewablefrom the water in Devil’s Branch, just northof Duncan Bridge.
