By Rachel Sweigard Homes in the Smith Lake area are known for being mag- nificent and unique. Linda Hopper, who lives in Cold Springs, has a home that stands out from the rest. It is not the magnifi- cent views or gorgeous interior that makes this home exception- al, but is instead the private barn that makes this property truly one of a kind. Recently, Linda had an open house for her neigh- bors to showcase the barn and introduce them to the world of horse jumping. Linda, a Florida native, and her husband Keith, who is an Alabamian, built their home in Cold Springs six years ago. Shortly after, Linda desired to expand their Smith Lake footprint, and the couple purchased ten acres near their property when it came up for sale. They soon built a barn, and designed it with the comfortability of both horses and people in mind. There are four stables that can house two horses, as well as a tack/ dressing room and stalls to wash and tack the horses in. In the front of the barn, there is a bar, seating area, fire table, and an observation deck that overlooks the jumping ring. Continued on Page 62 smithlakeliving.com I 61
Linda has been involved with horse keith & Linda Hopper jumping for over twenty years, and owned a barn in Tampa, Florida that focused on teaching traditional English riding. Linda shares that she wasn’t allowed to have animals as a child, so once she became an adult, she was deter- mined to have as many animals as she could, no matter the size. Soon, Linda fell in love with horse jumping. She explains that horse jump- ing is a unique sport because it requires two living beings, the rider and the horse, to work together to do one job. The open house that Linda held in April 2022 was mainly an exhibition with a local sister barn, Fu- ture Performance Horses, to introduce horse jumping to neighbors since horse jumping is not a prevalent sport in the area. At the open house, Linda had a few friends jump horses to show the beauty and talent of the sport. Guests also enjoyed dinner to go along with the show. Linda remarks that she has transitioned out of the teaching side of jumping, and now is only involved for enjoyment. Tow BoatU.S. - SMITH LAKE By Rachel Sweigard When people think about lake life, one of the first past times they think about is boating and other water sports. Boating brings a lot of fun and excitement to the summer, but it also comes with a good deal of responsibility as even the most experienced boaters are likely to encounter issues on the water during the summer season. When needs arise, the Tow Boat US Service on Smith Lake is there to assist boaters. Tow Boat US was founded in 1966 to offer service to recreational boaters around the country. Today, the company is nationwide and ensures over $9 billion of boats through GEICO Insurance and offers towing and other services to mem- bers. They also operate a nonprofit organization called BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water to provide tools such as boating safety courses and education to keep the waters clean. BoatUS memberships start at $99 per year and, among other benefits, provide the member with no out-of-pocket expenses for towing within at least 25 miles from the port responding to the incident. Mem- berships also cover incidents such as ungrounding, jump starts, and fuel delivery. Memberships provide services to all inland lakes, rivers, and waterways, with the exception of Florida. Treau Water Towing and Salvage, owned locally by Terry Russeau and locat- ed in the Crane Hill portion of the lake, offers towing, battery jumps, soft unground- ing, and fuel delivery to members of BoatUS. Treau Water Towing and Salvage’s services are 24/7 and they are here to serve customers in what is usually a very stressful time. Customers can rest assured that they are in excellent hands as all of the captains are knowledgeable about Smith Lake and boating in general. The business also offers repairs, salvage of damaged vessels, spill cleanup, and trans- portation to a local hotel or other destination if needed.
