Alabama Vietnam Veterans Memorial By Rachel Sweigard Continued on Page 58 One thing that is not lacking in the Smith Lake community is thankfulness for members of the armed services and veterans of wars. There are many active and retired service members in the Smith Lake area, many of whom are veterans of the Vietnam War, one of the most divisive and complex wars in American history. To honor the Alabamians who sacrificed their lives in Vietnam, there is a memorial at Sportsman Lake in Cullman. There is also an active chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America, which exists to sup- port fellow veterans as well as honor those who gave their life for their country. Ron Becker, the president of Chapter 416 of the Vietnam Veterans of America, explains that the chapter, as well as the organization as a whole, is a resource for all involved in the Vietnam War. This lo- cal chapter is responsible for maintaining the Vietnam Memorial in Cullman. The Memorial was originally built out of wood, and was showcased in the Veterans’ Day Parade in Birmingham in 1992. It was so well received that a more permanent structure was created out of Zimba- bwe black granite, the same granite that the Vietnam War memorial in Washington, D.C. is made out of. The wall was built by a Birmingham company over 56 | smithlakeliving.com

Before it landed at its permanent home in Cullman, it was taken all across the country, and displayed to honor those whose names are on the wall. There are 2009 names etched into the granite to honor the Alabamians who gave their life for their country in the Vietnam War. Thanks to members of the chapter, the wall is in remarkable shape. The chap- ter plans to continue to care for the wall as a way to honor all who served. Continued on Page 60 58 I smithlakeliving.com

Today, the Vietnam Veterans of America are active in the community. Van Hutchens, a Smith Lake local and member of the chapter, cleans the wall once a week to keep it in pristine condition. Becker reports that the chapter also coordinates events, such as a picnic at the memorial in Cullman on March 29th, which corresponds to the Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day as recognized by Congress. For those who would like to learn more about the veterans honored on the memorial in Cullman or Wash- ington, D.C., visit virtualwall.org. The website will allow visitors to search by state to get additional information about those whose names are on either of the walls. The website also allows visitors to get a rubbing of a name if they cannot visit the memorials in person. g hSmith Lake Livingtm 60 | smithlakeliving.com

Cattle and By Kristine Bullock Talent comes in all shapes and sizes. From watching tiny ballerina’s on a high school stage, to witnessing bold determination as athletes compete on an Olympic platform, the talent spectrum is extraordinarily diverse. The one thing talented people have in common is that they make what they do look easy. An abundance of passion paired with a high level of skill is what has come to define talent. It is this passion that drives a person from being good, to being great. Artist Emily Anderson epitomizes how a natural born talent can be fostered into a life-long career of creativity, inspiration, and gratitude. Emily Anderson is the artist behind the new Cattle and Canvas Art Studio at Sullivan Creek Ranch. She grew up in Campbellsville, Kentucky, a small farming community, and learned at a young age how to keep herself entertained by drawing. She possessed a certain propensity to art as many of her family members had created successful careers as professional artists, but she also held an exceptional understanding of business that would propel her into a career of creativi- ty. 62 | smithlakeliving.com

Canvas Art Studio Early memories sketching the cover art of Disney VHS cassette tapes created the foun- dation of Emily’s young art career. She began teaching herself shading and drawing tech- niques, and went on to start her own air brush business in high school. Her business expand- ed to include murals, and this medium is ulti- mately what drove her professional career. She attended Georgetown College in Kentucky on an Art scholarship, and also earned a tennis schol- arship after walking onto the team and excelling her first season. She graduated with a Bache- lor’s degree in Fine Arts and a minor in Business Marketing. Continued on page 64 ART STUDIO & TRADING POST SULLIVAN CREEK RANCH smithlakeliving.com I 63

EMILY ANDERSON shows cow painting in her studio. After college, Emily’s incredible talent as a muralist took a life all its own creating a business she never saw coming. After transforming her own children’s bedrooms into spectacular worlds through art, Emily found herself with a six month waiting list solely through word of mouth. She began to be commissioned to do art in children’s areas in public spaces, like churches. Her aptitude to include different mediums in her work diver- sified her as an artist, and eventually she was traveling out of state every other week for work. Through the twists and turns in life, Emily now has the unique opportunity to showcase her remarkable talent at Cattle and Canvas Art Studio. She has always had a desire to have her own studio to paint when passion drew her to the canvas, and this space has fulfilled that desire. The studio was complete in the Summer of 2021. Her husband Greg, owner of Sullivan Creek Ranch, named the studio space, and together the couple hopes to bring art and culture to the heart of Alabama. They plan to have a grand opening event in early January, 2022. Continued on page 66 64 I smithlakeliving.com

By Rachel Sweigard Coffee is one of the most popular drinks around the world. Many people are unaware that not all coffee is created or sourced equally. De- pending on the location, coffee can have different flavors, or may have been exposed to various fertilizers, pesticides, or other chemicals. Danny San- chez, one of the owners of Los Bomberos Café, sought to make a difference in the coffee made available to the residents of Smith Lake. Sanchez has been a firefighter for several years, and drinks many, many cups of coffee while at work. He and his fellow firefighters all share a love for coffee, so the idea to open their own roasting shop was born. Los Bomberos is Spanish for “the firefighters,” so the name seemed fitting. The business started in September 2020, and has since blossomed. Sanchez and his partners wanted to start the business so that everyone could have access to quality, organic, fair trade coffee. Los Bomberos is a roasting shop. They sell their coffee online, at select Piggly Wiggly grocery stores in the greater Birmingham area, and will deliver to the Smith Lake area. Currently, Los Bomberos offers dock pickup at various locations on Smith Lake. They offer two roasts to choose from: Ethiopian and Peruvian. According to Sanchez, the Ethiopian roast is sourced from Ethiopia, and is a bold, dark roast, whereas the Peruvian roast is sourced from Peru, and is a medium, fruity, and citrusy roast. The altitude differences in these two locations are what changes the coffee’s flavor pro- files. Continued on page 70 68 | smithlakeliving.com

Sanchez has plans to expand Los Bomberos in the future, and offer a coffee trailer for pickups. The coffee trailer will operate similarly to a food truck, and should be finished by November 2021. Los Bomberos is very active on Instagram. They also have a Facebook page and a website, https://www.losbomberoscafe.com/. Instagram is the best place to learn more about this wonderful initiative. Los Bomberos posts their pickup locations on Instagram, and the locations vary from week to week. g hSmith Lake Livingtm Harbison Self Storage ,LLC ICE VENDING STORAGE UNITS & LAUNDRY MAT 6526 COUNTY ROAD 41 Contact info: P.O. BASSMASTER OPEN October 7th – 9th, 2021 Lewis Smith Lake By Eddie Hand 216 boats set out from Smith Lake Dam boat launch on October 7, 2021, to complete for three days TM in the Bassmaster Open fishing tournament. Nick Lebrun, from Bossier City, Louisiana, was in the lead after two days of fishing with a total weight of 27 lbs. 15 oz. Nick remarked, “the majority of the fish I caught were spots. Fishing back home, we would leave a place catching spots because they would be small fish. On Smith Lake, that is a different story.” The final day, Nick could not pull out the win, but placed second with 33 lbs. 6 oz., and went home with $24,480 in prize money. The winner of the first-place prize money of $50,400 in the three-day tournament was Jacob Powroznik from North Prince George, Vir- ginia, with a total weight of 37 lbs. 9 oz. Jesse Wiggins, professional angler from Smith Lake, finished third receiving $17,280 in prize money. g hSmith Lake Livingtm NICK LEBRUN Bossier City , Louisiana 72 I smithlakeliving.com
