Cullman Furniture Market: Generations in the Making By: Kristine Bullock Through generations of expertise, years of experience, and a true desire bring an unmatched shopping experience to Alabama residents, John Launius and Reggie Watts have partnered to bring a new furniture store to Cullman. Cullman Furniture Market will be opening in April 2019. The former Tractor Supply Co. building located on U.S. 31 South will provide space for a large show room, with 6,500 square feet designated to La-Z-Boy alone. Upon opening, Cullman Furniture Market will become the only La-Z-Boy dealer in Cullman between Warrior and Huntsville. Right to Left: Reggie Watts - Co Owner Alisa Thompson - Store Manager John Launisu - Co Owner 60 | smithlakeliving.com

Neither Launius nor Watts are strangers to the furniture business. Launius operates Lau- nius Furniture in Warrior, Alabama, which is a 4th generation, family owned furniture store. Their promise of unmatched customer service has enabled the store to be in business since 1934. Watts operates High Point Furniture in Jasper, Alabama, which has been in business under the same ownership since 1983. Over the years, High Point Furniture has been focused on becoming a premier furniture dealer in Jasper. Launius and Watts have known each other for the past 10 years. While neither of them thought that they would one day take over their family businesses, their ventures led them both to looking at Cullman as a possible location for expansion. Initial impressions indicated that the project was too much for one person to tackle alone. So, early last year, Launius and Watts decided to commit to a joint venture. Together, they hope to build off their reputations from their respective stores to bring a one of a kind shopping experience to Cullman residents. Continued on Page 62 smithlakeliving.com I 61

Cullman Furniture Market Cullman Furniture Market will bring the largest furniture showroom to the area at just about 20,000 square feet. Showrooms will be filled with beautiful home furnishings from the best brands in the market including Rowe, Hooker, Basset and more. In keeping true to the strong family history that both Launius and Watts have in the furniture business, Alisa Thompson, Watts’ sister, will serve as general manager. Alisa worked as a service manager for Eckenrod Ford for 15 years, and has lived in Cullman all of her adult life. “Our desire is to bring a great shopping atmosphere to Cullman residents while continuing to offer small town prices without having to leave Cullman”, Launius explains. Cullman Furniture Market will continue with their relationship-driven approach to customer service. Their friendly, knowledgeable, low-pressure style of business is sure to appeal to Cullman shoppers. Once doors open in April, Cullman residents will be greeted with experienced sales and service staff who will treat them with a kindness that will leave them feeling like family. g hSmith Lake Livingtm 62 | smithlakeliving.com

The Relocation of HydroHoist® of Alabama By Eddie Hand HydroHoist® of Alabama has operated out of Duskin Point Marina for the past 30 years. Last year, after Harold Beasley sold Duskin Point Marina, HydroHoist® of Alabama constructed a new facility for its operation. Harold commented, “The new facility gives us a large storage area for more inventory, an office featuring a show- room for product displays, and a shop for technicians to build our boat lifts”. The new location, which is located on Smith Lake Dam Road, gives easy access to Smith Lake and surrounding areas. The accessibility of this location will allow customers to view different boat lifts in the show room, or pick up accessories and parts for their existing boat lifts. Harold Beasley has long been involved in the boat lift business. He remembers, “I bought three boat lifts in 1988, and put one in my dock on the lake. Then, it took me two years to sell the other two. In the old days, I would travel to Oklahoma to pick up boat lifts, and haul them back to Smith Lake”. Harold remarks that one of the major changes in the boat dock business over the years is the size of boats. Up until the mid 1990’s, boats were only 20 feet long and weighed 2000 to 3000 pounds. Last year, HydroHoist® of Alabama installed one of the world’s largest boat lifts that can hold up to 30,000 pounds! Approximately 30,000 Lbs. Boat Lift 64 I smithlakeliving.com

Phillip Beasley, President of HydroHoist® of Alabama, is excited about their new facility. The company has grown to an operation employing 12 people, and they except to see an increase in business of about 30 to 40 percent over the next three to five years. HydroHoist® of Alabama has 12 sub-dealers, and their district now encompasses the state of Mississippi. Phillip has been in the boat lift business for over 26 years, and has the distinguished honor of being a leading dealer for the company. Harold & Phillip Beasley HydroHoist of Alabama “30+ years in business on Smith Lake” New innovations have changed boat lifts over the years. One major improvement is that the metal com- ponents of the lift are out of the water, and tanks are now made of molded plastic. A new popular product is the shallow water lift, which can operate in just 26 inches of water! The technology and advancements that have been developed by HydroHoist of Alabama have increased the life and quality of boat lifts for customers. If you are interested in purchasing a new boat lift, PWC port, power pedestal, parts or accessories, drop by and visit HydroHoist of Alabama at their new location: 2784 Smith Lake Dam Road, Jasper, AL. Black Warrior Waterdog How will this endangered species impact Smith Lake? By Rachel Sweigard Smith Lake is a national treasure when it comes to clean, clear water and recreation oppor- tunities in the summer months. However, it is also home to many species of wildlife, some of which can only be found in the Smith Lake area. One such animal that can only be found in the Smith Lake area is the Black Warrior Waterdog. The Black Warrior Waterdog, also known as a mudpuppy, is extremely rare and can be found in Smith Lake. Despite its canine-sounding name and nickname, the Black Warrior Waterdog is a salamander that spends its entire life underwater. It is native to Alabama and can only be found in the Black Warrior River basin, which includes streams in the Bankhead National Forest, which are headwaters to the western portion of Smith Lake, according to Allison Cochran, a wildlife biologist at Bankhead National Forest. The Black Warrior Waterdog can grow up to 9 inches long and has external gills since it lives exclusively underwater. Since it lives in rocks and boulders and has to swim, its head and body are flattened and its tail is compressed. Cochran states that the Waterdog lives in clean, clear, flowing streams and requires rocky areas for shelter and to lay eggs. Over the last few years, a team of biologists from Auburn University, Alabama Power Com- pany, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the US Forest Service have been trying to learn more about the Waterdog. A new technology that they have been trying, according to Cochran, is that of environmental DNS (eDNA) detection. If an animal is present in a stream, it sheds DNS into the 70 I smithlakeliving.com

Black Warrior Waterdog Historic Range water, which scientists then can collect and detect the DNA present. Currently, scientists have found Black Warrior Waterdog DNS in new sites that were previously not known to be home to the animal. After this discovery, scientists have been following up at these sites to confirm the presence of the animal and determine which parts of the stream are being used. The Black Warrior Waterdog has been detected at four sites in the Bankhead National Forest, one of which is a tributary to Smith Lake, which was previously undocumented. The Waterdog is not a heavy presence in the Black Warrior River basin, so biologists are studying this animal and its habitats to find ways to conserve its habitat and ensure the presence of this animal for years to come. The Black Warrior Waterdog was added to the endan- gered species list in 2018. g hSmith Lake Livingtm AddGasAndGo Watercraft LLC Mobile Repair Service & Sales 256-590-5369 Greg Huffman Owner Certified Mechanic smithlakeliving.com I 71

The Alabama Bass Trail Tournament was scheduled to be at Smith Lake on Saturday, February 23, 2019. However, due to inclement weather, the tournament was postponed until the next day. Kay Donald- son, executive director of the Alabama Bass Trail Tournament remarked, “Anglers were ready, but the safety of our participants comes first. We made the right decision to postpone the event”. When the weather cleared up on Sunday morning, anglers were able to launch off to compete for the $10,000 first place prize. Not only did anglers have to face adverse weather conditions, but high water levels also made the tourna- ment challenging. Due to heavy rain, the water level at Smith Lake was approximately eight feet above full pool. These high levels created difficulties for the Chamber of Commerce volunteers from Jasper as the boat ramp was under water requiring volunteers to wear waders to get the boats in and out of the lake. Donald- son offered a special thanks to all of the dedicated volunteers. These less than ideal conditions made anglers unsure of their ability to bring in a winning catch. After the results were in, everyone was surprised with the winning five fish total weight of 19.19 pounds, and a big fish winning at 4.26 pounds. Tim Griffith from Centre, Alabama and David Eyrse from Collinsville, Alabama took first place and walked away with $10,000 in prize money. Coming in second and winning $5,000 were Mark Meyer and Ty Campell from Cullman, Alabama, who had a five fish total of 18.62. Jamie Smith and Michael Rains from Albertville, Alabama came in third place winning $4,000 with a five fish total of 17.13. Smith Lake Driftwood Art Creations by Price Abbott Everyone knows Price Abbott as your friendly E sales agent behind the counter at the Country Mall. Price is more than willing to help you with pumping supplies, fishing gear and bait, gas, grocer- ies, and more. He always wears a smile on his face, and will make time to tell you a joke or fill you in on the latest happenings around Smith Lake in the Crane Hill area. Price has recently retired from his career as a painter, and has now taken up a new creative endeavor making beautiful art out of driftwood. Price has been making art out of bent wire for over 30 years. “Now,” he remarks, “I am combining bent wire and driftwood from Smith Lake to make art sculp- tures.” The driftwood takes time to cleanup because part of the wood is usually buried in mud or sand. Once the driftwood is clean, a sealer is applied which brings out the natural colors of the wood. Finally, bent copper wire is added. The final creation is a stunning piece of art that can be displayed in your home directly from the shorelines of Smith Lake. Contiued on page 77 3746 | smithlakeliving.com

Price has been surprised by the success of his art, and has even sold artwork to some high-end design stores for resale. The next time you stop by the Country Mall, be sure to allow some extra time to check out his latest masterpieces. If you are interested in purchasing one of Price’s unique cre- ations, you can contact him at (256) 620-5010. g s l lmith ake ivingtm h Driftwood from Smith Lake and bent copper wire sculpture by Price Abbott makes for an impressive work for your lake home. smithlakeliving.com I 77
