A PUBLIC NOTICE FROM ALABAMA POWER PROTECTING THE LAKES WE LOVE. You’re a lake lover, and so is Alabama Power. We’re committed to preserving the scenic, environmental and recreational value of our lakes. And one of the most important ways we do this is by administering our shoreline permitting program. The last time we adjusted our permit fee structure was 2005, nearly 15 years ago. A lot has changed since then, which is why we’re updating the process and related fees. If you are considering projects along the shoreline, please contact your local Alabama Power Shoreline Management office and apply for a permit before the fee changes take effect on January 1, 2020. Alabama Power’s Shoreline Management team is dedicated to serving our lake communities. It’s part of our commitment to you — protecting the lakes we all love. By Rachel Sweigard Grocery stores in small towns are often the lifeblood of the area. In many small towns across the country, the locally owned grocery store saves residents from a long drive to a not-so-local chain store. When people visit Smith Lake, especially around Dodge City, they often find themselves at S&S Foods purchasing groceries to take on boat rides or to grill out for dinner. S&S Foods has two locations in the Smith Lake area, which include Dodge City and Holly Pond, and a third location in Cleveland. Each location sells a wide variety of groceries, including fresh produce and dry goods, and has a full-service meat department as well as frozen foods, a dairy section, and a deli counter. The Dodge City location also has a post office in the store, which saves many customers from stopping at an extra location on their way home. Michelle invites you to visit the Take & Bake Section ! 58 I smithlakeliving.com

The deli at the S&S Foods in Dodge City is more than just a typical deli. Fresh sliced deli meats and cheeses are not the only items sold. The deli has premade sandwiches and snacks offered as a healthy lunch option. It also includes a hot bar that offers a large variety of entrees and sides that change daily. These items include BBQ chicken, lasagna, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, and beef roast. The hot bar also has seasonal items such as green beans, sweet potato casserole, and chicken and dressing around holidays such as Easter. All of the items sold can be packaged to take home, and are served hot. Continued on page 60 smithlakeliving.com I 59

S & S FOODS The Dodge City deli also makes freshly baked bread. Many people believe that having freshly baked bread with dinner requires a long drive to the closest grocery store. However, Smith Lake residents need to look no further than S&S Foods. S&S also sells homemade cakes and pies, and bakes birthday cakes decorated to the customer’s liking. For more information about the Dodge City deli, please call S&S at (256) 287-2663. Williams Hardware & Building Supply By Rachel Sweigard One of the few drawbacks of living in the Smith Lake area is the fact that it can be a lengthy drive if you forget a specific item from the hardware store. One of the perks that come with living on Smith Lake is that there are multiple stores in the area that carry essential items for lake living. These stores are often owned by “lake people” who have called the area home for many years, even for generations, and for whom the area holds a special place in their hearts. Williams’ Hardware, located in Arley, is one such store. Williams’ Hardware has been in the area since 1993, and carries virtually any sup- ply needed for a DIY weekend project, a long-term building project, or items needed for rou- tine maintenance. The hardware store’s location saves residents the long drive to Jasper or Cullman to retrieve that one little part needed for a project that they might have forgotten. What sets Williams’ Hardware apart from the “big box” chain stores is that it comes with the Southern hospitality that the area is known for, as well as a personable staff who can offer endless help no matter what the project. Williams’ Hardware carries a wide variety of items including: materials for home renovations such as paint, stain, and painting supplies; plumb- ing fixtures, whether they are needed for a DIY project or a plumbing repair; building materials for any project imaginable; and the tools necessary to do many odd jobs around the house. Williams’ Hardware has a reputation of giving outstanding service with reasonable prices, and they boast a large inventory of necessary supplies for various projects. In fact, a quick Google search reveals a five-star rating, which speaks volumes for how they treat their customers. Continued on next page 62 | smithlakeliving.com

The second annual Poor Man Poker Run was held on Lewis Smith Lake on August 3 to support The Smith Lake Task Force and Wake the World Alabama. The event was a success, and included 19 stops located all over the lake. Approximately 300 participants entered their poker hands to win prizes and gift cards. Dave Dempsey, the event organizer, reported that sever- al individuals donated their winnings back to the charities. We want to thank all of our sponsors, poker stop docks, and all of the wonderful volunteers that helped to make this a fun event for a worthwhile cause. If you were unable to attend the event this year, be sure to make plans to come to the third annual Poor Man Poker Run next year! “Mr. Smith Lake” & Crew having a fun day running the POOR MAN POKER RUN Poker Run brings out the Performance Boats 64 I smithlakeliving.com

Sipsey Fork Trout Unlimited By: Kristine Bullock For 60 years, Trout Unlimited (TU) has worked to conserve, protect, and restore North America’s cold- water fisheries and their watersheds. As a national nonprofit with nearly 300,000 members, TU’s staff and volunteers work all across the country to protect, reconnect, restore, and sustain trout and salmon habitat to ensure that robust populations of native and wild cold-water fish can thrive for future generations of sports- men and women. To find more information about TU’s conservation efforts, please visit www.tu.org. About 18 months ago, Virgil Stephen Jones began the process of forming a Trout Unlimited chapter for the Sipsey Fork, which flows into Smith Lake. Within six months, the chapter was officially chartered and recognized by TU as Sipsey Fork 636 (SF636). The Sipsey Fork chapter was ultimately formed to conserve, protect, and improve the cold-water tailrace fishery and watersheds below Lewis Smith Hydroelectric Dam in north central Alabama. SF636 is currently the only TU chapter in the state of Alabama. Their mission is to promote good stewardship of the Sipsey Fork so that Alabama’s only year-round trout fishery can continue to support a healthy cold-water habitat, and therefore be enjoyed by anglers and recreationists for years to come. Sipsey Fork Trout Unlimited meets on the bank of the Sipsey River smithlakeliving.com I 67

The Sipsey Fork is the only national wild and scenic Sipsey Fork river in the state of Alabama. The Sipsey Fork of the Black TU Warrior River is 71 miles long, and originates at the conflu- ence of Thompson and Hubbard creeks in the Sipsey Wilder- ness in the William Bankhead National Forest. The tailrace begins at the cold discharge of Smith Dam, which is oper- ated by the Alabama Power Company, and flows southeast for approximately 12 miles before converging with the warming waters of the Mulberry Fork. This tailrace is the southern-most cold-water fishery east of the Mississippi, and is one of the few places in the state that can sustain a rainbow trout popula- tion. On July 15, 2019, SF636 applied for an Embrace the Stream (EAS) grant through TU. EAS is a matching grant program that awards funds to TU chapters and councils for cold-water fisheries conservation. The chap- ters drive to apply for an EAS grant stemmed from a desire to create an entity that would help manage and protect the Sipsey Fork. Their conservation effort ideals pre- scribe that the Sipsey Fork chapter be stewards from the headwaters to the confluence of the Mulberry Fork. “You cannot conserve a part of the whole, you have to conserve the whole thing”, Jones explains. “We need to embrace the whole watershed, not just the cold water”. As president, Jones would like for the chapter to be stewards of the entire water system, which would include Smith Lake. EAS grant awards will be announced this fall. Despite the strong leadership that the Sipsey Fork chapter has assembled, Jones explains that logistical issues have made engagement difficult. There are over 500 TU members in the state of Alabama. If you are a TU member and live in the state of Alabama, you are also considered a member of the Sipsey Fork chapter. However, there are currently only about 30-40 active mem- bers. “It is difficult to organize a tight-nit group of people that are so geographically spread out”, explains Jones. 68 | smithlakeliving.com

Through outreach, SF636 hopes to pro- mote education that will encourage people to take interest in the efforts that the chapter has embraced. “The state of Alabama needs to recognize that the Sipsey Fork is a resource that could be improved to promote tourism in the fish- ing industry”. Many anglers choose to travel out of the state to enjoy idyllic trout fishing locations such as Yellowstone or the Colorado River. Jones believes that the tailrace of the Sipsey Fork has the potential to be a top grade trout fishery if there is an increase in the management and stewardship of the water. To become a member of Trout Unlimited and help in the conservation efforts of the Sipsey Fork chapter, readers should visit www.tu.org. Membership costs $35 a year. Be sure to list the Sipsey Fork as your home chapter. Chapter meetings are currently being held bi-monthly in the Birmingham area. “If we can’t motivate people to engage in this chapter, the chapter will fail”, warns Jones. “Coldwater fisheries everywhere are in danger, and habitats are being compromised. The tailrace of Smith Lake will continue to promote a trout population despite environmental issues, and it is important now more than ever for people to get involved!”. Please visit https://sipseyforktu.org for more detailed information about the Sipsey Fork chap- ter. To get a local insiders scoop, be sure to visit Brandon and Mary Carole Jackson who are owners of the Riverside Fly Shop in Bremen, Alabama. Brandon is the Vice President of SF636, and Mary Carole serves on the Board of Directors. Together, they have an enormous amount of experience and knowledge about trout fishing on the Sipsey Fork. g hSmith Lake Livingtm smithlakeliving.com I 69
