Smith Lake RV & Cabin Resort By Kristine Bullock Smith Lake RV & Cabin Resort is a private neighborhood community that is unparalleled, and offers exclusive access to experience stress free lake living. Ownership enables residents the opportunity to invest in lake property through the purchase of a lot to park an RV or build a custom lake cabin or home. Larry and Sandy Harris bought the property that has now become Smith Lake RV & Cabin Resort in 2005. The 60 acre piece of land was home to long horn cattle, and was undeveloped, wild, and unkempt. The water views were completely hidden by the overgrowth, and the land has unsurprisingly taken a lot of time and energy to be transformed into what it is today. Larry and Sandy began development of the RV & Cabin Resort in 2008. The couple outlined a four phase expansion plan, and presold all of phase one in 2010. Because they did not have a big marketing budget, Sandy traveled up and down the highway to gas stations and businesses to spread the word about lot ownership. Development is now half way through phase three, and the resort currently has 155 lot own- 14 | smithlakeliving.com

LARRY & SANDY HARRIS ers. Phase four lots, which will all contain lake views, are planned to open at the end of the year. Full devel- opment will include a total of 230 lots. With the purchase of a lot comes access to all of the resort amenities including saltwater pools, a poolside clubhouse, stocked fishing ponds, a private boat launch and slips, pickleball and basketball courts, outdoor ping pong, a playground, laundry and bath facilities, a lakeview boardwalk, a natural waterfall, and two saferoom storm shelters. All lots are developed with AT&T all fiber U-verse capability, 10 x 50 RV pad with full hook up and lighted pedestal, underground utilities, stained and stamped concrete pad and drive- way, and sod. The resort also includes a lakeside pavilion, which is home to Church on the Lake, a true church without walls, which is run by residents who live on the property. Development of custom homes and cabins LAKE VIEW & BOAT LAUNCH AREA on the resort has really taken off in the last five years. Lot procurement through Smith Lake RV & Cabin Resort provides owners with access to full construction plans, or the ability to design a custom home of their own to fit their family and lifestyle needs. Upgrades including guest houses, private fishing piers, covered Pergola’s, storage rooms, and decks are also available. Larry and Sandy have truly created a unique opportunity for people to enjoy their own little piece of paradise at Smith Lake RV & Cabin Resort. Not only are residents surrounded by magnificent beau- ty, but they are also welcomed into a community where neighbors become lifelong friends. The Seed, The Tree, and Uncle Sam receive donations directly from your most taxable retirement accounts and withdraw the assets income tax free. Therefore, if you are inclined to leave some of your assets to a non-profit organization (e.g., church, charity, etc.) at your death, consider leaving it your most taxable assets. Designate your Tradi- tional IRA (or part of it) to be what you pass to the non-profit and leave less taxable assets to your living beneficiaries. That’s a no-brainer. As you can see, financial planning in retirement can certainly involve a Roth IRA. The more money you convert into a Roth IRA before reaching age 73 (currently), the less you are forced to take out of your Traditional IRA under the required minimum distribution (RMD) rules. RMDs can sometimes force retir- ees into higher tax brackets when they fail to fill up the lower bracket(s) in the years before the money was required to come out. Remember, the goal is tax control (how much, when, and by whom). Harvesting taxable income and the Roth IRA conversion strategy for people in retirement is com- plex, but it is not impossible. For purposes of this article, I have oversimplified things a bit. Yes, there are some other factors to consider when you elevate income in retirement (triggering Social Security taxation, increasing Medicare premium expenses, knowing how much to harvest without slipping into the next marginal tax bracket, etc.). Yes, Roth IRAs are only 100% tax free if you hold them for certain time frames and/or until age 59.5. Yes, there are other factors that may need to be considered as well (liquidity, health conditions, retirement projections). And, yes, tax laws are always changing, making the tax time bomb a moving target. Confused? Not to worry. You are not alone. These are all factors you should be discussing regularly with your CPA and your financial advisor. My entire point is this . . . . Have the conversation! Uncle Sam hopes you don’t.
