LAKE FASHION... LAKE FASHION... LAKE FASHION... ly swimwear is this summer’s big new trend, specifically brightly colored sparkly bikinis. Whether it’s pink, blue, or metallic, you can be sure to make a statement with a sparkly swimsuit at the lake this summer. As far as swimsuit styles go, there are three main trends to follow: asymmetrical, ribbed, and cut-outs. A solid colored swimsuit can instantly become more fun and fresh when given an asymmetrical style. A summer 2021 favorite seems to be the one shoulder swimsuit. It might not produce the best tan lines, but adds shape to a fairly simple, solid swimsuit, and can achieve a desired boldness without patterns or bright colors. Another way to make a solid colored swimsuit stand out is with texture, specifically with a ribbed fabric. You can also incorporate ribbed fabric into your summer wardrobe with ribbed tank tops. They are super soft and comfortable making them an easy option to throw on with a pair of shorts. Correctly placed cut-outs can also make a swimsuit more flattering while adding detail. Cut-outs along the ribcage of a one piece, or a keyhole cut-out on a bikini top can take a basic swimsuit and make it special and memorable. Anything goes at Smith Lake from denim to sundresses, but these new swimwear styles can easily elevate your summer style while spending time on the lake. g hSmith Lake Livingtm 58 I smithlakeliving.com

Cullman Economic Development Agency By Rachel Sweigard Industry is often the driving force behind the success of a community, yet it can be a challenge to bring industry to an area. The Cullman Economic Development Agency (CEDA), a division of the City of Cullman, provides assistance to new and existing industries and developers, encouraging positive economic growth in the community. Their goal is to create jobs and investments that propel the econo- my. CEDA is the lead contact agency for industrial development, according to Dale Greer, the director of the CEDA. The Agency works to expand and support existing industries in the area, as well as recruit re- tail shops to come to Cullman City. It is an extension of the City of Cullman, like the police and other agen- cies, and started in an attempt to create jobs and draw businesses to the area. Greer states that they are the “go-to office for recruitment and projects.” The Agency also works to improve quality of life by investing in local projects unaffiliated with the Agency, such as various fishing tournaments on the lake. CEDA has many projects currently at work to better the City of Cullman. For example, there are two hotels currently under construction, and one in negotiation. These hotels will bring around 300 jobs, and will enhance economic growth by providing accommodations to travelers. Greer reports that there are also a variety of homes and apartment buildings being built, which reflects the growth that Cullman has seen over the last few years. Greer states that in the last year, there has been a huge increase in employ- ment in Cullman County, with approximately 3,000 more people working compared to last year. Greer remarks that it is the residents of Cullman that make the Agency great, and what draws in- vestors to the area. When investors are looking to invest in an area, they look at the overall quality of life, which includes parks, roads, and schools. Greer is grateful for the relationship between the CEDA and their Cullman County counterparts as they often work alongside one another on various projects. Greer states that Cullman County is an area with an outstanding quality of life, and he hopes that future inves- tors will see the value in the area to help it grow. g hSmith Lake Livingtm 60 | smithlakeliving.com

“I remember dad bought a large Belgian Tom with his FARMALL Tractor... black horse. He weighed 1000 pounds with the harness. His name was King. smithlakeliving.com I 63 King was a great horse. We cleared land, plowed, tilled, and planted hay for the farm animals. In the winter-time, we worked in the woods with King. King would pull a large dray full of wood all day. King always managed to get his knees hurt, and always slept standing up. When he would fall down, he would hurt his knees. At times, you could hear King fall in the barn. Many times, while working in the woods, King would fall down with the harness on. Dad had to do something! So, Dad bought a 1947 Farmall “A”. I plowed with a single bottom plow that was pulled behind the “A”, the same plow that King used to pull. My brother George also drove the tractor. Plowing with a trac- tor sure beats plowing behind a horse. Shortly after we acquired the tractor, King was sent to the mink farm for mink food. We were all saddened because King was a part of our lives. An event worth mentioning took place one Saturday afternoon. The entire family was working in the woods, and the skies started to darken, and a storm was brewing on the horizon. We told Dad that we had to get home before the storm. We always tried to get out of work. Dad said OK, and my brother and I left the woods. My brother had a bright idea; take off our shoe laces and tie them together, and tie it to the engine governor of the tractor. We could then go faster pulling on the governor rod. When we got to the highway, my brother shifted into 4th gear. We were going wide open down the highway when my brother all-of-a-sudden decided to make a sharp right turn, and locked the right rear wheel break. I don’t know how we avoided a tragedy. We both jumped off the tractor before it rolled over on its side. Somehow, we were unscathed. I don’t know why, but to this day my brother always exhibits unex- plainable, irrational behavior. After high school graduation, I went to work at P&H Crane Company as a machinist in Escana- ba, MI, using my Dad’s precision tools that were painted olive drab, which I still have. LTCV Cullman County - Litter Cleanups Smith Lake area residents may have seen volunteers wearing bright yellow vests with a LTCV logo pick- ing up litter on the side of the roadways. Do not be surprised! The Litter Trash Clean-Up Volunteers (LTCV) of Cullman County is a new group that is working with the Cullman County Sheriff ’s Office, the Cullman County Sanitation Department, the Cullman County Commission, and Alabama People Against A Littered State (PALS) to help clean-up roadways in the Smith Lake area. LTCV is well organized under the direction of Tom Miller. Missy Jones manages the groups social media accounts, Betty Bissot is the Roster Coordinator, and Jim Eason is in charge of supplies. The group has team captains that hold cleanups in various regions around the lake, and have a target goal of one major cleanup a month in high traffic areas. The group has hosted three major cleanups: one on County Road 109, another on County Road 222 near Guthrie’s Crossroads, and one on County Road 940 starting at County Road 222. Approximately 700 pounds of litter were collected at each cleanup. Interested in joining the efforts? The LTVC Cullman County Facebook page contains information about how to sign up. The annual Smith Lake Park Fourth of July Fireworks and Music Festival will make its long awaited return after being cancelled last summer due to COVID-19. While it was imperative that the festival be cancelled to maintain the safety of citizens and prevent the spread of the coronavirus, it was a much missed part of the summer. Thankfully, residents can now gather safely and celebrate as a community this Fourth of July. The festival will take place on July Fourth from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. , and tickets can be purchased for $5 per person. There will be numerous arts and crafts booths, live music, delicious food, and many family activities, including the much loved golf cart parade, for attendees’ en- joyment. Other activities include putt-putt golf, swimming in the pool, kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding.
