Preserving Alabama’s natural resources starts in our backyard. Did you know longleaf pines are home to roughly 120 endangered or threatened plant and animal species? That’s why Alabama Power is working hard to help them grow. We’ve teamed up with partners across our state to preserve the natural resources that make Alabama a great place to put down roots – especially if you’re a longleaf pine. Soaring forSmiles By Kristine Bullock In the midst of worldly chaos, it remains important that av- enues exist where people can find joy. Riding high above the crystalline waters, or landing tenderly in the slews and channels of Smith Lake, residents may be lucky enough to delight in the sight of Marty Roberson. Rob- erson has devoted his years in retirement to rebuilding and customizing seaplanes. His most recent projects will soon make their debut appearances on lake, and are sure to make anybody who is witness to this great sight smile from ear-to-ear. Roberson has been a full-time resident of Smith Lake since 2002. He has been instrumental in several notable projects which have raised the level of quality of real estate in the area including the development of Waterford Condominiums and Windemere Lakeside Garden Homes. These endeavors took up much of Roberson’s time until 2010. A few years later, he decided to revisit his long-time passion of flying. 60 | smithlakeliving.com

Roberson obtained his private pilot’s license in the 1980s. Knowing that he was not going to pursue a career in aviation, flying became a hobby that was set aside while he was advancing in his professional career. With re- tirement brought space to return to his love of flying. He put in hours to get a new license, and in 2018, Roberson traveled to Orlando to gain his seaplane rating, an endorsement that only three percent of private pilots acquire. Roberson completed his seaplane training on a Progressive Aerodyne SeaRey, which is an American two-seat, single engine, amphibious flying boat designed and manufactured by Progressive Aerodyne. This fixed-winged seaplane allows the plane to land on water. The SeaRey is the world’s most popular and proficient light sport aircraft due to its short takeoff distance, high rate of climb, and tailwheel configuration that makes it effortless to fly. After experiencing flight on a SeaRey, Roberson decided immediately that he wanted on of his own. Continued on page 63 smithlakeliving.com I 61

62 | smithlakeliving.com

With only approximately 1000 manufactured in the world, Roberson finally found a SeaRey to his liking located in Arkansas earlier this year, two years into his search. Much to his wife’s dismay, it was painted purple and gold, the well-known colors of the Louisiana State University football team. Roberson quickly re-painted the seaplane crimson and white in recognition of the Univer sity of Alabama so that it is clear where the fami- ly’s loyalties lie. In addition to the refurbished SeaRey, Rob- erson also has an old plane which he bought in 2015 and converted into a seaplane by installing pontoons. Both should be fully operational by late summer. Smith Lake residents are encouraged to keep their eyes on the sky in search of this air- borne rarity. The magnificent aircrafts will surely be a sight to see! g hSmith Lake Livingtm smithlakeliving.com I 63

Where Have all the Buoys Gone: End of a Smith Lake Landmark For the past three decades on any given Saturday in the Alabama summer, small boats could be seen queuing up in Little Pigeon on Ryan Creek. They were preparing for a run through the slalom ski course. These days, boats are a rare sighting. Due to the necessity for flat water, slalom skiing is largely confined to private lakes. So, the course on Smith Lake provided a rare opportunity for weekend skiers to test their skills. Slalom cours- es are made from a complex structure of PVC pipe that float 6 feet below the water. These pipes are secured in place by steel cables and heavy anchors which are suspended by a network of buoys. The slalom course at Ryan Creek has been funded and maintained for decades by the Smith Lake Ski Club. It has been open for the enjoyment of all levels of skiers. While its location on a public lake has prevented official permitting, the course has largely been a favorable attraction. In mid-May, the course unexpectedly disappeared from the slough. According to information provided by Chad Pate, commander for the North Alabama Marine Patrol Division for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the course was sunk by the Marine Patrol because it was deemed to pose a navigational hazard. Sadly, no warning was given, and the structure was simply sunk by removing Continued on page 72 68 | smithlakeliving.com

Where Have all the Buoys Gone: End of a Smith Lake Landmark the buoys that supported the course. Unfortunately, the PVC pipe, steel cables, and bungee cords were left underwater. The Smith Lake Ski Club is making plans to remove the course in its entirety. Development in the area has considerably changed the landscape of the Smith Lake waters. Understandably, homeowners have concerns about boat traffic. Removal of the ski course may be counterproductive as surfers, wake boarders, jet skiers and tubers still fre- quent the slough. The lake shoreline and dock disturbances from these watercrafts may be far more pronounced than that of the ski boats running the slalom course. The removal of the slalom course at Ryan Creek will leave those who used it disap- pointed, but skiers can remain grateful for three decades of enjoyment. The course will surely be missed by skiers and spectators alike. g hSmith Lake Livingtm 72 I smithlakeliving.com
