For the Love of Bells By Samantha Acton For those who love to decorate, a nautical theme will not only highlight the surroundings of the lake, but can be inspiring as well. One way to incorporate a nautical feel into home décor is by adding one simple piece of decoration - a bell. There are so many different kinds of bells that can be featured in a nautical wonderland. From fish bells to dinner bells, vintage brass metal bells to nickel brass ship wall bells, bells can add an authentic touch that will bring out a distinctive style and unique flare to any lake home. A large cast iron dinner bell on a wooden post mount can be placed as a decorative piece outside, in front of a patio, on a boat dock, or even in a garden. These bells were once used to alert children and other family members out working in the yard to come home for dinner. A fishing style bell is a great accessory to any lake home. Whether it be featured on a dock, or placed at a doorway entrance, it makes for a beautiful addition to any space. A dinner bell is also a great feature for a lake home, and brings forth Continued on Page 58 an old fashioned look. Rather than a standard door bell, this bell will add a distinct look to any front door, and will ring when someone walks into the room. 56 | smithlakeliving.com

An anchor ship bell can be hung on the inside walls of a home with a rope lanyard. This bell will stand out, and make for a great conversational piece. And finally, the best thing about any of these bells is that they can be personalized to include a family name, a lake house nickname, or even a picture. Hopefully these bells have offered some fresh and new decor ideas! g hSmith Lake Livingtm 58 I smithlakeliving.com

The day camp is held Monday through Thursday. It starts at 8:00 AM and ends at 1:00 PM, and can hold up to five kids. The camp consists of learning sessions about animals and covers animal health care, including feeding and brushing, animal safety, and horsemanship. The horsemanship session enables the kids to ride on a horse, and teaches them how to handle the horse appropriately. Private individual horse- manship lessons are held on Fridays, and are taught by Jesse. Shelby plans to get back to offering trail rides, and hopes to get the Country Store fully stocked and operational after a break during the COVID-19 pandemic. SShheellbbiiee Z Z By Rachel Sweigard While it can be a bit of a hidden gem, Alabama boasts countless talented people. Shelbie Z, a local singer, brought some notoriety to the Jasper area with her powerful voice, and continues to enter- tain countless people with her music while staying true to her roots. Shelbie Zora James Panter, better known as “Shelbie Z,” grew up in Sumiton, Alabama, and graduated from Hope Christian School. She has been singing her entire life, and comes from a mu- sical family as her dad played music. Her grandmother was also an avid fan of the Grand Ole Opry, and Shelbie would frequently watch performances with her. Shelbie discovered her love for singing in public when she was young. One day, her mom was singing a special at church on Sunday, and Shelbie wanted to sing too. Her mom eventually agreed to let her sing, and the rest is history. In the years that followed, Shelbie gained notoriety by singing in various venues in the Jasper area. In 2013, Shelbie competed on The Voice, and in 2016 she appeared on American Idol. In 2020, she was named the 2020 BAMA Female Breakout Artist at the Alabama Music Awards. Shelbie currently resides in Jasper with her husband and son, and runs a company called Junking Divas which refurbishes and repurposes heirlooms. Since appearing on The Voice and American Idol, Shelbie has continued to write and record music. Currently, she has a single out called “Love You Anyway”. She has recently started a new group called ‘Shelbie Z and the CB3’. She continues to sing at various venues in the area. Shelbie will be performing at Hideaways Marina on Smith Lake on August 6, and at Trident Marina on August 21. Shelbie is active on social media, and loves to engage and interact with fans. Fans can “like” her “Shelbie Z.” Facebook page, and follow her on Instagram @shelbie_z. g hSmith Lake Livingtm 66 | smithlakeliving.com

BMS Marine moves to new location. By Rachel Sweigard It is always great to hear that a long time, locally owned business has moved their location to a larger facility. In a world where everything seems to be outsourced, and small businesses have to compete with gi- ants in the consumer world, it has become increasingly important to shop small and local whenever possible. BMS Marine Inc., a longtime business on Smith Lake, has recently expanded to a new location to better serve its customers. BMS Marine Inc. specializes in many services that are vital to homeowners on Smith Lake. They are a dealer for EZ Port floating docks, and can install virtually any type of boat dock, including docks that have slips for jet skis or other watercraft, a full range of lifts, and docks with swim decks that can contain walkways from the shore to the dock. BMS Marine Inc. also offers repairs to ensure that docks reflect the quality of lake properties, and continues to remain safe over time. Lake properties frequently have to manage erosion around the waterline, and BMS Marine Inc. specializes in rip rap shoreline work to help slow erosion and boost the aesthetics of a property when viewed from the water. In addition to rip rap work, they can also build steps from the shoreline to the back of a home using rocks creating a natural walkway to the water. BMS Marine Inc. builds customized fire pits and patios so that customers can enjoy their time outdoors in the summer. All of the services that BMS Marine Inc. provide have contributed to their need to expand to a larger location, which they did in June of 2021. They intend for this larger location to allow them to better serve their customers and the community. BMS Marine Inc. is now located at 295 Clubhouse Road in Jasper, AL. They can be reached at (205) 265-2690 for quotes on any of their services. They also have a website, www.bmsmarineinc.com, and a Face- book page that people can “like” to receive updates. g hSmith Lake Livingtm Harbison Self Storage ,LLC ICE VENDING STORAGE UNITS & LAUNDRY MAT 6526 COUNTY ROAD 41 Contact info: P.O. A con- cept was generated whereby a number of zones would be formed to facilitate small groups of volunteers to take on the responsibility of removing litter from coun- ty roadways. An overriding consideration was imple- mented that volunteering with this organization was not going to become a fulltime undertaking or commitment. Currently, five zones around Smith Lake have been des- ignated to help retain the part time participation concept. LTCV has partnered with other organizations to assist with the removal of litter on our highways. Shortly after LTCV organized, they became affiliated with People Against A Littered State (PALS). Members are indebted to Cherrie Haney and PALS for their assistance and guidance during the early days of their existence. LTCV contacted Gary Marchman at the Cullman County Commissioner’s office. Marchman and his as- sistants were very helpful and supportive. With their assistance and knowledge, the organization has been able to secure and mount “Do Not Litter” signs at various locations around the county. The Cullman County Sign Shop has also provided the LTCV with two sets of roadside “Litter Crew” signs. Commission Chairman, Jeff Clemons, offered his full support and was instrumental in expediting the recent installation of signage. Phillip Patterson with the Cullman Solid Waste Department and his staff have been support- ive of the organizations efforts. Their hauling away of collected litter in a timely manner is much appreciated. LTCV would like to acknowledge the efforts of many individual citizens who, of their own initiative, keep the roadways in front of their property and adjacent areas devoid of litter and trash. The organization appreciates their involvement in helping make our roadways clean and attractive. LTCV would like to give a special thank you to LTCV members Missy Jones, Betty Bissot, and Jim Eason for all their “active volunteerism” to make the pro- gram successful. Without the combined participation of all those mentioned above, it is hard to imagine what our roadways might look like today. Looking forward, as increased awareness develops, there are more individuals coming for- ward to volunteer their time and to interact with others to continue improving the cleanliness of our roadways in Cullman County. In 2021, the efforts of LTCV and the Cullman County Sheriff’s Litter Pick Up Crew have combined to col- lect approximately 2695 pounds of litter from Cullman County Roadways. “Its Not Who.....But You, Who Can Make A Difference” 75 g hSmith Lake Livingtm smithlakeliving.com I
