Behind Piazza del Plebiscito, a stone’s throw from the Royal Palace and the San Carlo Theatre, not far from the Quartieri Spagnoli and very close to the elegant Chiaia district, the Neapolitan architect Giuliano dell’Uva has just inaugurated his new headquarters. “It was not easy to find it and equally complex to bring it back to life and to this function”, the designer explains. “The flat is on the main floor of the 17th-century Palazzo Caracciolo di Sant’Eramo (now Mirelli di Teora) which, during the Belle Epoque, was home to one of the most sought-after cultural salons. A representative location, chosen not only to meet the needs of an evolving studio — Giuliano has a staff of around twenty collaborators working with him — but as a real calling card, the place where the architect’s design style and passions can be displayed. “The previous studio was next my home, so it often happened that clients were welcomed into my living room, to get a preview of how their project would develop”. The idea was therefore to organise a workspace with the necessary workstations, but at once recreate a domestic atmosphere. The same that we find in each room, in sequence, starting from the entrance hall and ending in the large workspace, once a gallery overlooking the historic Palazzo Serra di Cassano. “The dialogue between past and present is the hallmark of our studio. Often when we intervene, our aim is to enhance the best portions of a historical place, linking it to a new spatiality and contemporary furnishings”. A year and a half of work has eliminated old false ceilings to give new light to frescoes hidden by time; total white rooms emphasise the new furnishings; satin-finished steel walls, surprisingly arranged, give a new twist to otherwise historicised corners. Everywhere there is design, of yesterday and today, with pieces from Caccia Dominioni to Gio Ponti, from Gae Aulenti to Draga & Aurel. “The choice of objects and the selection of materials is a fundamental component of our work. Here we have highlighted the layering of eras, emphasising quality details and eliminating less valuable elements in favour of the new”. The external gallery, once used as a service passage, bordered by a 19th-century stained-glass window, now becomes a scenic material library. “To show our passion for ceramics, a material we often use, but also for wood, marble and metals, we tactically set them up in the veranda to make them more exposed to the light”. Contemporary art, among the designer’s interests, could not be missing either, with important works by Vera Lutter, David Tremlett and William Kentridge. “These are world-renowned artists who have established virtuous relationships with the city. They represent the commitment of gallery owners such as Lia Rumma and Alfonso Artiaco, with whom I love to collaborate, who are very attached to Naples while maintaining an open, international perspective”. An approach to life and profession that we also perceive in Giuliano dell’Uva’s work. Tied to Naples, its beauty, its history, but profoundly topical. — 155 ELLE DECOR","In the room devoted to meetings and calls, large T17 table designed in 1972 by Luigi Caccia Dominioni for Azucena, vintage chairs by Cassina with Kvadrat fabric.
