Looking at it, there's nothing to suggest this bike was born a BMW. The base bike has been covered in hand-formed bodywork built from carbon fibre, milled aluminium and 3D printing. The carbon fibre parts include the stretched tank and chunky fork covers, and those aluminum wheels are milled on a CNC machine. The BMW boxer twin-engine's heads can be seen poking out from the side covers. The bike proudly retains the R18’s 1,802 cc two-cylinder engine and with it its monstrous 116 pound-feet of torque – the highest displacement boxer from BMW. It turns up with 91 horses (68 kW) for a top speed of 190 km/h, with the weight saving from the handcrafted titanium exhaust adding more pop. One of the most eye-raising mods is a Zillers air suspension system that replaces the factory-fitted steel setup. While air suspension systems are common in the car world, they're almost unheard of on motorcycles. You won't see this R18 up on a kickstand, it rests on a pair of spikes MAXIM.COM.AU 11

COVER GIRL elcome to MAXIM Australia, Yana, and congrats on your debut cover. 2 0 MAXIM.COM.AU How do you feel? I feel great and very grateful. Thank you for this opportunity – it is a pleasure. The thing is, this is my first men’s magazine cover so far and MAXIM is a legendary brand – it embodies sexuality and passion. Needless to say, I’m very excited. What did you love most about this photo shoot? For starters, the location was exceptional – we shot this at a ranch in Malibu, California, and the owner of the ranch is Suze Randall, one of the most famous female photographers of the ’70s and ’80s. Although the horses were nice, they were quite challenging to handle at first but the team was super professional and the vibe was very special. Well, you look beautiful. What would you say is your best asset? I’m able to style out absolutely everything and I’m an incurable optimist. Long legs are also very helpful – I mean, helpful in being an optimist. Haha! When do you feel sexy? There is no “when” for me. When it comes to sexuality it’s either there, deep inside, or it’s not. My feeling of being sexy doesn’t depend on a setting, occasion or an outfit. What would people be most surprised to know about you? Maybe the fact that I really come alive at night time. I mean, I really feel a rush of energy in the evening and it needs to be released. Tell us a bit more about yourself and your life story so far. I was born in Siberia, Russia – there’s six months of winter and snow there, so it’s is not a piece of cake to stay a hot girl, even for the hottest ones –haha! I became a model when I was 13 and for several years modelling was the main part of my life. It was hard work but it was a joy as well. I happened to be engaged in many international projects but had to pause my career when my first son, Mark, was born. I wasn’t even thinking about relaunching it and considered participating in photo

shoots only as a hobby. Then I met Vladimir, we got married and I moved to the USA. Now we have three kids, a house, a dog and many plans together. And, you know, my modelling career seems to have a fresh start now and I’m receiving many interesting offers! As the partner of NHL champion Vladimir Tarasenko, who won the Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues in 2019, what are the pros and cons of being a “WAG”? I absolutely love it! It might be emotionally overwhelming sometimes because, you know, it’s sport – there are highs and lows – and the schedule during the season is usually very tight. But professional athletes always impress me with their strength, endurance and audacity – I like being part of this world. How did you meet Vladimir? You’re anticipating a great story, aren’t you? Well, it developed into a great story, eventually, but it started quite ordinary. We’re both from Novosibirsk – the city in the centre of Siberia – and we had several mutual friends. We would go to the same events but were never officially introduced to each other. Until one day I accidentally put a like on one of his photos on Instagram and… he proposed to me three months later. Was it love at first sight? For sure it was! It felt like it was meant to be. What did he do to win you over? Vladimir is a very romantic guy. In the very beginning of our story he would have flowers delivered several times a day wherever I was. I mean, we are talking about absolutely random spots in our city. I still have no idea how he managed to organise it. But neither romantic gestures nor his name were the key to winning me over – it was his maturity and responsibility. How big an ice hockey fan are you? I am a huge one, now! And, of course, first and foremost I’m a huge fan of my husband. I love everything about the sport except the injuries – ice hockey injuries are the worst. You’re the owner of Italian beauty centre Aldo Coppola. Tell us more about this gig. It started from my loyalty to the Aldo Coppola brand. Being a client of this centre I fell in love with its product, concept and approach. So, I was very determined to bring it to Novosibirsk and the centre celebrated its 11th birthday last year. I couldn’t have imagined myself being anything but a model or a businesswoman. As an entrepreneur and model, you’re also a mum and WAG. Which of these roles do you enjoy the most? I love the mix. This combination works perfectly for me. MAXIM.COM.AU 23

Gym, boxing and other activities are for staying healthy and fit, but pole dancing is always for pleasure. It does make the body more flexible and strong, though. What have you learned about men over the years? Even the toughest of them sometimes need a hug. What’s one thing men should always remember about women? Oh, that’s an easy question to answer. Women are always right. Haha! Finally, have you ever been to Australia? Unfortunately, I’ve never been to Australia, but I’ve always wanted to! And who doesn’t? My sons play tennis – I’m really into this sport – and, of course, the Australian Open is a very significant tennis event which I would really love to see. It’s on this month, so you never know, I might come! T 2 4 MAXIM.COM.AU

Describe your perfect date with David? We’d start off with a game of tennis, with the loser buying the winner dinner, then go home, get dressed up, and go out for a nice dinner, followed by some Cold Rock ice cream, then back home to watch a good movie. In this edited extract he shares the discipline, courage, sacrifices and perils required to be an international extreme sports athlete… 3 2 MAXIM.COM.AU

LOGAN’S RUN Gold Coast’s Logan Martin started freestyle BMX at the age of 12 after following his brother, Nathan, to the Crestmead Skate Park. Spending most of his spare time there, Martin started showing real talent at the age of 15, entering competitions with his parents, Donna and Sean, taking him to the events and buying bikes and parts. Logan first travelled overseas in 2012, where he won the first international event he entered. Martin won the International Festival of Extreme Sports (FISE) World Series title in both 2015 and 2016, following those titles up by claiming the inaugural BMX Freestyle world title at the UCI Urban World Championships in China in 2017. A stellar 2019 followed, which saw Logan win dual X Games gold, the Urban Games gold, and a World Championship silver behind teammate Brandon Loupos. He also built a BMX ramp in the backyard of his home to prepare for his Olympic run during lockdown. At the 2020 and 2021 National Championships in Melbourne, Martin won gold, and added a second career rainbow jersey when he took out the 2021 UCI World Championships in France. The culmination of Logan’s career so far was claiming gold at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games. He still lives on the Gold Coast with his wife, Kimberley, and their two children, Noah and Luna. If I do crash my mindset isn’t, “What if I get hurt again?” Straightaway I’m thinking, “When can I get back into it?” I’m aware of the risks. I know what can go wrong, but I prefer to look at it in a positive light: what can go right. That is a better way to look at life and the precarious situations that I’m constantly confronted with in BMX. People often ask what I’m thinking about during tricks. Because I’ve been doing this for 17 years – professionally for nine years – I’m a lot more conscious of what’s going on in the trick or in a spin. As soon as I take off from the ramp I can feel if something is about to go wrong, or I can feel if something is about to go right. I know how to control things to a point. If I need to I can correct it in the air, or if I’m going to crash, I can slide out a little bit more smoothly than I would have 10 years ago, because I have more awareness of where I am and how the trick has gone wrong. When I first learned backflips I would shut my eyes in the middle of the trick, only opening them to see the landing. That was because I was scared to do the trick for a long time but, like a lot of things, the more you do them the more comfortable you become. I’ve found that the more relaxed you are on the bike, the more in control you are of what is happening around you. But sometimes it doesn’t work out that way. My first competition of 2018 was a small dirt contest over in America at a Supercross event. I lost my bearings on a jump and paid a hefty price, landing face-first on the ramp, which I then slid all the way down. It was a solid crash but I came away relatively unscathed – just a bit of whiplash. Unfortunately, it was a sign of things to come. When I got home my focus turned to the opening FISE World Series event of the season, which was in a new location: Hiroshima, Japan. I’d been focusing on a couple of new tricks, including a frontflip flair, which had a high degree of difficulty. FITNESS MAXIM fitness guru, Alexa, gives you the lowdown on training for endurance and preparing your body to pound the pavement… By ALE X A TOWERSE Y 4 0 MAXIM.COM.AU

They say that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to master a skill. If you want to be a good runner, then you need to run. Unfortunately, when it comes to training for endurance, it’s very easy to get caught up in an endless cycle of “chronic repetitive motion” while neglecting all the other stuff that actually keeps your body road worthy. Strength training plays a vital role in preparing your body for running. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW You can use weight training to address structural and strength imbalances and prevent injury, to improve power to weight ratio, to reinforce optimal posture and breathing and to develop athletic potential and speed. INJURY PREVENTION Addressing the most common structural and strength imbalances 1is key when it comes to bulletproofing the body against injury. ANTERIOR vs TOP TIP POSTERIOR CHAIN Always work to the weakest link. Start your reps on the weaker side, and whatever number you fail on, you repeat that number If you’ve ever been injured and spent time at on the stronger side. That will work to physio, you’re probably familiar with the old chestnut that “your glutes just aren’t firing”. 3even out the imbalances over time. An easy way to add in some direct work is by including seated straight leg lifts TOP TIP 2and banded mountain climber variations. Spanish Squats are a phenomenal exercise SIDE TO SIDE to isolate the VMO, and are often used in IMBALANCES knee rehab. Essentially you’re using the premise of the terminal knee extension in Given that running is essentially the squat movement. FITNESS IMPROVING POWER THE WORKOUT TO WEIGHT RATIO Here is one of my favorite Muscle mass is not necessarily synonymous run-focused unilateral with strength. Having an optimal power to weight ratio means you have the right amount strength based workouts of muscle to carry your engine for the duration for you to try… of your task.
