Between the extensive de Gournay library, her a short distance from the de Gournay London showroom and lifelong love of fabrics, and the huge range within the archives of houses such as Pierre Frey, Clarence House, Dedar, Bennison, the list goes on, the room for creative freedom was limitless. ‘For years, I’ve requested samples of all fabrics that have inspired me. YAYOI KUSAMA, 2000 The house was the home and studio of James Rannie Swinton, a Scottish society portraitist who commissioned the architect George Morgan to design it. Completed in 1860 on an empty plot of land that James bought on Warwick Square in Pimlico, it shares a lovely big communal garden near the river. The whole building was designed around the north-facing window in James’s painting studio. Leading to the studio is a typical Victorian gallery space with a domed glass roof, designed so his visitors could walk past his paintings on their way through. Off the studio was the room where his paints were mixed and stored. James’s living quarters were at the back of the house. The last owner ran the building as an exhibition space for 30 years and with the adaptations for public visitors and heavy white paint covering up much of the original detail, it had taken on the feeling of an institution. A lot had disappeared, but some really superb work had survived – plasterwork, in particular. Layers of thick whitewash had been applied over and over for years and never sanded, so everything was horribly lumpy. It took a great deal of time to dry-scrape the house to reveal the finer details – we even found hints of red silk on the library walls, on which James’s paintings were probably hung. I wanted to assess everything in its rawest form before deciding on the concept and feel. Once we had stripped it, the house was sublime. It felt like an abandoned palazzo with extraordinary volume in the rooms and wonderful layers of distressed colours from years of decoration. I thought if we did a little bit of work, we could simply live in it, but as we started to restore and refresh everything an interesting and exciting energy started to develop, and the restoration work became really important.","HOUSEANDGARDEN.CO.ZA | H&G MARCH/APRIL 2023 69","IN THE KITCHEN, ’30S SYRIE MAUGHAM CONE PENDANT LIGHTS AND AN ARTWORK BY RYAN SULLIVAN","‘PLAIN space can be sad, but it can also be very POWERFUL, uplifting, or SOOTHING and RESTFUL’ ROSE UNIACKE BELOW IN ROSE’S RIGHT HOMEOWNER BEDROOM, A PAIR AND DESIGNER ROSE UNIACKE, SEATED OF 17TH-CENTURY ON AN OAK BENCH LACQUER CUSHION BY WILLIAM BURN, MIRRORS (ABOVE ONE OF A PAIR MADE THE FIREPLACE) AND FOR FONTHILL NEW A 20TH-CENTURY ABBEY IN 1860, THE PIECE BY CARLO YEAR THE HOUSE SCARPA (ON WAS COMPLETED THE MANTLE) HOUSEANDGARDEN.CO.ZA | H&G MARCH/APRIL 2023 71","THE WINTER GARDEN THAT GREETS YOU IMMEDIATELY IS THE SURPRISE AND ENTERTAINMENT OPPOSITE PAGE IN THE STUDY (THE BALLROOM IN SWINTON’S ORIGINAL HOUSE), AN ANTIQUE OCTAGONAL PARTNER’S DESK, EBONISED REGENCY CHAIRS, A LAMP (ON DESK) BY POUL HENNINGSEN, MUGHAL RUG AND SELF-PORTRAIT ARTWORK BY SARAH LUCAS 7 2 H&G MARCH/APRIL 2023 | HOUSEANDGARDEN.CO.ZA","It took three months to clean and entire volume of a room matters. The design had to address the incline and an excavated section with high retaining walls by the basement gym. It also needed to provide separate seating areas to be used at different times of the day. Marcus’ solution was to create a series of terraces in various sizes of hand-split Yorkstone radiating from the apron of pavers around the house. Closest to the house is the dining terrace, large enough to seat 22 people under the canopy created by two rows of umbrella- trained Malus ‘Evereste’. A steel-edged, slate-lined pool contains the terrace on the southern side, creating a still surface for reflections of the surrounding plants and sky. Three years after planting, the garden forms an undulating band of sculptural trees, grasses and perennials, which sweep around the house to the south and southwest, and the steeply banked grassy terraces to the north. ‘The aim was for it to look as if it has been here for decades, so we used mature trees and plants,’ Marcus says. He did not want it to be a garden of disparate parts or rooms. The exception is the recessed area outside the gym, to which he has given a separate identity with cloud-pruned Fagus sylvatica underplanted with textural plants in tones of green and white. The rest of the garden is a flowing space. This is achieved partly by the network of paths – some grass, some gravel – that traverse it. The flow is further established by the repetition of key plants, particularly multi-stem Japanese pagoda trees, Phlomis russeliana, Sisyrinchium striatum, Deschampsia cespitosa ‘Goldtau’, Dianthus carthusianorum, Thalictrums, Salvias, Achilleas and Geraniums and by the gently rolling rhythm of the planting. Multiple breaks between these beds provide opportunities for focal points. In mid-summer, paths are cut through the wildflower meadow when it is in full bloom, extending the journey through the garden for a few weeks. The grasses in the boundary beds are robust enough to cope with prevailing winds and stand firm in winter, providing a beautiful band of tawny and golden stems. Marcus prefers plants that flower into autumn, such as Asters, Penstemon, Agastache, Erigeron karvinskianus and Gaura, and those that ‘die well’, such as Phlomis russeliana, Rudbeckia subtomentosa ‘Little Henry’ and Veronicastrum virginicum f. roseum ‘Pink Glow’. In early spring, once the dried stems have been cut down, bulbs take over in the ornamental beds, along with the fresh green of grasses, such as Hakonechloa macra and Sesleria autumnalis, and spring perennials, including Aquilegias and Epimediums. Then, the summer-flowering perennials and grasses slowly take off, creating the rich tapestry of shapes, textures and soft colours that the owners delight in.
