The first thing you should know is this: Not all sex parties are alike, says Zachary Zane, an expert for Momentum Intimacy and the author of Boyslut: A Memoir and Manifesto. Just like regular shindigs, they come in all forms, from laid-back get-togethers among intimate groups of like-minded folks to upscale, Eyes Wide Shut–style masquerades. The one thing most have in common is the fact that they are, first and foremost, parties, says Robert Artés, director of experience at Snctm, an exclusive private members club that hosts erotic events around the world. But unlike the free- for-all eff-fests you’re probably picturing, sex parties aren’t just big orgies—they’re actual social functions that require a certain level of decorum. Not decorum as in rigid etiquette (obviously), but as in you gotta know the general rules lest you risk seeming sorely out of place. Dear Reader, What seems to be happening here is something called comparative suffer- ing. It’s when we measure someone else’s pain, decide their problems are bigger than ours, and start to suppress our own emotions to tend to theirs. It’s a mindset that isn’t helpful for you, your friend, or your relationship. Yes, it is important to recognize what your friend is going through and to have compassion for her, but in order to have a sound bond, you have to show up as your full self. If you’re dimming your light in an attempt to be supportive, your own needs aren’t being met—and reciprocity is part of what makes a friendship a safe space to begin with. I know your friend’s lack of follow-up might hurt. But it sounds like she is honoring the relationship by being excited for you, and she doesn’t seem to be downplaying anything, which is great. This is evidence that she’s mindful of your feelings (also great). She might not be actively digging deeper into your love life or career now because (1) she doesn’t know you want her to, (2) she’s super focused on figuring out how to get on track herself, or (3) she feels a sense of jealousy (which isn’t a bad thing!) or grief about her own job or breakup. Any or all of these motivations are totally normal. Whatever her reasons, try not to take it personally. Instead, remind yourself that your friend needs time to process how your conversations make her feel. Hiding your achievements doesn’t give her the tools she needs to overcome any of her own uncomfortable emotions. If you’d like to have a heart-to-heart and you’re truly cool with whatever feedback she gives you, go ahead and ask her how your news makes her feel. Say something like, “I care about you and I know all the things you’ve been dealing with, so if it’s ever difficult to hear any of my updates, let me know.” If she admits it’s tough, try to appreciate that she’s comfortable enough to be real, and remember that her feelings about this actually have noth- ing to do with you. From there, you might choose to hold off on day- by-day updates and share your You’re not doing good news with other friends for a while. Then check in with your her a favor by best friend in a week or a month keeping your to see how she’s doing. You’ll be accomplishments able to hear about her progress and decide if it makes sense to try secret. again. Remember: Relationships are a dance between compromise and boundaries. In general, though, and for what it’s worth, your exciting news might actually be helpful to her. Being exposed to joy and rewards is a huge moti- vator, and it fosters a feeling called co-regulation. That’s when one person’s steady nervous system (in this case, yours) helps regulate another’s (your friend’s). Meaning you can serve as an emotionally stabilizing force even if you’re just hanging out and catching up. You’re doing okay, and by proxy, she could see herself getting there too. Sharing the happy stuff deposits into the relationship—it doesn’t withdraw from it. The bottom line: You’re not damaging your friend’s mental health. Sharing your success is part of being in a friendship, and even though she’s going through a tough time, you’re not doing her a favor by keeping your accomplishments secret. And it never hurts to ask how she really feels. If you don’t let this period of your lives taint your history together, your friendship can be as close as—or even closer than—it once was. Not that I’d expect her to remember it—after all, this is a woman who oversees hundreds of cast and crew members on any given day, whose hit show is currently three Emmy wins and two record-breaking seasons into its run, and who has the massive responsibility of keeping our country laughing through whatever fresh hell the world brings next. Honestly, it’s a minor miracle she’s managed to squeeze me in today at all, even if she’s already multitasking: At this moment, she’s getting ready to head to set, a plush towel swaddling her freshly (finally!) washed natural hair, when...boom. “Broadnax!” Quinta laughs. “Zion Broadnax. I know my kids!” Unlike folks who might’ve mistakenly equated the meteoric rise of a fresh Black face with overnight success, I first peeped Quinta’s unstoppable grind way back in 2014, when my friends and I obsessed over her video series The Girl Who’s Never Been on a Nice Date, aka “He got money!” And then again in her iconic BuzzFeed Video era. It was that specific moment in internet history when the rapidly growing media company’s video series were truly inescapable, and her unique brand of humor was right at their core. I started working at BuzzFeed not long after, and although we never got a chance to collab— she was in L.A.; I was in NYC—I watched closely as she dropped banger after viral banger. I learned that she’s been funny, unsurprisingly, since childhood, when she’d crack up her family with spot-on impressions, and since her college years at Temple University, when she’d skip 76 Cosmopolitan I S S U E 8

I just wanna make sure people feel supported, taken care of, heard. I wanna have an open relationship with the cast, and that requires communica- tion and patience. It’s not easy. My writing and production staff often tell me how I’m a very good boss and one of the best ones they’ve had. But I still...I don’t know. I come from a production assistant background. That was my first role on a set before even being an actor, that and writing. I think with Abbott, there’s a possibility that we’re in this for the long haul. I try very hard to treat all the members of my staff—about 200 to 300 people—equally, and we try to put that ethos into the production, treating everyone with care and respect. C-SUITE Our second annual class of female entrepreneurs of color has come for—and earned—the corner office. Want to do the same? Right this way. BY ANNABEL IWEGBUE PHOTOGRAPHS BY TYLER JOE
News flash that’s less of a news flash and more of an are-you-freaking-kidding-me-still: In 2021, women of color held just 4 percent of C-level roles at U.S. companies. That number looks even worse when you narrow it down to C-level women of color founders, who—in addition to breaking down representational barriers in the country’s highest executive positions—*also* take on all the entrepreneurial grunt work while **also** setting new standards of excellence. And then there’s the fact that fewer than 1 percent of all venture capital dollars are going to these founders! It’s maddening. Which is why Cosmopolitan and digitalundivided (a nonprofit that focuses on catalyzing economic growth for Latina and Black female entrepreneurs) are beyond excited to do something positive: to celebrate the New C-Suite Class of 2022, 10 women who are redefining their industries while redirecting workplace culture. Prepare to be very, very inspired.
