Summary Major evolutionary trends: • Transition and adaptation to land • Structure: vascular tissue, leaves and roots • Reproduction: reduced dependence on water for fertilisation, increased efficiency of gametophyte dispersal (pollen, flowers, dispersal of progeny (from spores → bare seeds → seeds within fruits) • Life cycles: dominant gametophyte generation (bryophytes) → dominant sporophyte generation (vascular plants) → reduced gametophyte (seed plants)
