นายมนทกานต์ จติ ภริ มย์ รหสั นกั ศกึ ษา 5904023271 วชิ า English Literature for Classroom Teaching (CEN4103) Analyzing meaning and using ‘cried, whispered, shouted’ from the context Terms cried (130-B1), whispered (21-B2), shouted (81-A2) Collocation - Grammar ‘cried’ is more used in a quoted speech to express the idea’s character Style ‘whispered’ is some used in exclamatory sentences (!), and sometimes, it can be used as a main verb in the sentences as found in ‘Charlie leaned over the bed and whispered to the two old women.’ ‘shouted’ is some used in quoted speech and it can be used with exclamation sentences (!) to express the strong emotion. Cried is used when someone replies the questions loudly or emphasizing the situation before. E.g. (1) ‘Is it really true that Wonka’s Chocolate Factory is the biggest in the world?’ ‘True?’ cried all four of them at once. (2) …or are you pulling my legs?’ ‘It’s true!’ cried all four of the old people at once. (3) ‘Shall we move on?’ Mr Wonka asked. ‘Oh, yes!’ cried Charlie and Grandpa Joe, both together. (4) ‘Do you love it too, Charlie?’ he asked. Oh, yes, cried Charlie, ……. (5) …….. Augustus Gloop! Augustus Gloop!’ ‘Grandpa!’ cried Charlie. ‘Listen to them, Grandpa! ……. (6) ‘You’re pulling our legs, Chralie, aren’t you? You’re having a little joke?’ ‘I am not!’ cried Charlie ………… (7) Not people, Charlie. Not ordinary people, anyway.’ ‘Then who?’ cried Charlie. Whispered is always used when someone speaks softly or low noise. E.g. (1) ‘Listen to them, Grandpa! What are they doing?’ ‘Ssshh!’ whispered Grandpa Joe. (2) The other three were all snoring loudly. ‘Ssshh!’ whispered Grandpa Joe, and he beckoned Charlie to come closer. (3) In five minutes, he was back. ‘Have you got it?’ whispered Grandpa Joe, his eyes shining with excitement. (4) Charlie leaned over the bed and whispered to the two old women. (5) ‘You’ll just love it!’ ‘Yes,’ Charlie whispered. ‘I know.’ (6) And to Charlie, as he led him to the door, he whispered, Don’t you let anybody have it! (7) ‘It my secret hoard,’ he whispered. ‘The others don’t know I’ve got it.’ 1

E.g. (1) ‘Are you crazy?’ shouted a woman who was standing equally close. (2) ‘The one I want to see is Veruca Salt!’ shouted another voice in the crowd. (3) The squirrels rushed up behind him. ‘Help!’ he shouted. (4) ……pressing another button. ‘No!’ shouted Charlie ‘Stop’ shouted Grandpa Joe. (5) ‘But Mr Wonka,’ he shouted, when someone tried to ask him a question. (6) ‘Daddy’ shouted Veruca Salt (the girl who got everything she wanted) (7) ‘Yippeeeeeeeeee!’ he shouted. ‘Three cheers for Charlie! Hip, hip, hooray!’ To provide the students using different words, but sometimes it’s similar meaning in a particular situation. To provoke the students noticing why the same words can give different expression. To encourage the students differentiating words. Which one is commonly used in some situation? 2
