ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM Module 3: Post-task Group 1 from 11-HUMSS-A
The group has conducted a social experiment where each of us was assigned to talk to a person we know and compliment them by using the phrase, \"You look like an elephant/Alam mo, mukha kang elepante.\" An elephant is considered the largest living land animal, it has long trunks, wide flat ears, and a gigantic head that goes along with its body.
In Thailand, elephants are highly valued and are considered a symbol of beauty. “The elephant, as a national treasure of Thailand, is a sacred symbol of the Thai people.” (Han, 2019).
On the other hand, people in the Philippines may have a different reaction. Receiving a phrase such as \"You look like an elephant/Alam mo, muka kang elepante\" can most likely come off as an insult and offend the person receiving the phrase since generally comparing someone from an animal will result in a negative connotation.
Commupneicrastoinontodaifnfoetrhsefrrom one That is why we must consider certain factors before saying certain sentences such as the one used in the social experiment. Your relationship with the recipient The overall personality of the recipient The ethnicity or culture of the recipient The supposed to be compliment used in the social experiment have different connotations depending on where the person you're saying it to is from. That is why being aware of the basic information of the person you're talking to is important in order to have a conversation with no one being offended.
In communicating, the responses we get are also dependent on our way of delivery. We must be mindful of our tone because what we 1say can be misunderstood and come off as rude, condescending, or offending to others. In saying phrases similar to \"You look like an elephant,\" we must at all times explain the context or meaning behind it because the data gathered showed how most people thought of this phrase as something negative. Explaining to them that is indeed praise in another culture, Thailand specifically, shows that we are being sensitive to their emotions.
conclusion It is important for us to practice the proper or different types of strategies when it comes to communicating because it helps us deliver our message with clarity to avoid misunderstandings. Learning these strategies can also help us build confidence when it comes to speaking or communicating with others and makes us become more sensitive to the people around us. Most importantly, when we apply these strategies correctly in appropriate situations, it can help widen our social network and build healthier relationships.
