Y3S2 – LASALLE COLLEGE OF THE ARTS Week 14 – Catching Up Loose Ends 6th April 2020 Ive used the weekends of Week 13 and the start of Week 14 catching up on loose ends. A quick talk with Stan postured the view that I might as well use the time (should there be ample) to work on an ‘exhibition’ plan and not sit on doing nothing. I also coordinated with my friend Daryl and proposed for the models to be rendered and modelled. I have also worked on the illustrations styles. These will be described in detail on the next few pages. WFH – DAY 1 201

CREATIVE PROCESS JOURNAL WEEK 14 Catching Up Loose Ends 1. Tidying up Illustrations: I have been endlessly contemplating the alternatives to which I can do to improve on the state of the illustrations to steer away from the references that were made earlier. The key idea here is to visually represent the idea of a ‘glare’ in a different visual form, that still aligns with the collaterals that were proposed before. I tried out a few styles to see what worked best – note that here, aesthetics play a role as the specification of a glare being used and represented is the hinging factor. Below are some try-outs of how the glares could’ve manifested, but ultimately the black bevels were decided as most visually appropriate in terms of matching the rest of the visuals. They are also similar to the treatment used in the title of the key visual. 202

CREATIVE PROCESS JOURNAL WEEK 14 Catching Up Loose Ends 2. Models I have contacted my close friend Daryl in an attempt to convey the ideas of the models for him to help with the modelling and rendering of the objects that accompanied each key illustration. (these serve as actual artefacts that provides a deeper point of engagement with the audience that engages with the work.) The sketches (shown below) were proposed and the results came back more than promising (on the right). 204

CREATIVE PROCESS JOURNAL WEEK 14 Catching Up Loose Ends 3. Mockup ‘Exhibition’ I initially did a mockup of what an imagined exhibition space would look like in Cinema 4D. Due to my limits about the knowledge of the programme, I was only able to structure how it looks, without an actual render of the gallery space together with the works. I happened to speak to my friend Daryl again, and he mentioned that he might be able to do it provided the assets are all provided for. The two references below are lighting examples, while the sketch on the right is a current look of where assets will be in the exhibit- ion space. LIGHTING REFERENCES INTERIOR RENDER 206

CREATIVE PROCESS JOURNAL WEEK 14 – Working From Home Thoughts and Reflections The Hungry But Not Satiated As I write this, it is the start of the week whilst working from home. I have a check-in with Daryl (model-making friend) at the end of the week with regards to the interior render of how the gallery (exhibition) would look like with the works in place. As I am figuring all of these out step by step, I realised that there are actually plugins available on the net to help display .obj file objects: meaning I can actually have the render of the gallery be displayed as an interactive model to show how it would look like in a pseudo- exhibition format! (exciting) However, the details to which the writeups would be accessed will still be read as a still (2D) via some forms of PDF sharing site. (like PUB HTML 5) I am slowly trying to see what are the gaps in which I can have further intervention in my work process right now, as much of it is done. But ideally I do not want to waste the next two weeks just slugging out on netflix and doing nothing: doing something actually keeps my alive, my passion afoot. Having some sort of loose structure to the day with small milestones help to clear my mind a whole lot too, with me being less focused on my internal thoughts. I definitely would strive further in this last leg of the FYP journey. I wouldn’t want any chance of making the work better to go to waste, as much as the situation now is uncertain as heck. STRIVE ON, JUSTIN NOAH. Do things restfully, steadily, quietly. You can do this! 208

Y3S2 – LASALLE COLLEGE OF THE ARTS Week 15 – Second Circuit Breaker (cb!) 14th April 2020 Ive used the weekends of Week 14 and the start of Week 15 working on resting up in an attempt to recuperate and finishing tidying up the necessary files that are required for submissions. The following pages are details of deeper depth about what went on in the week. These include the proceedings of the 3D exhibition model, the 3D renders in 3D printed formats, the incident of the Macbook crashing, and some reflections on the current condition with the WFH measures. WFH – Week 2 209

CREATIVE PROCESS JOURNAL WEEK 15 – Models: 3D Exhibition The 3D interactive model that Daryl has helped me with came back with exceedingly great results. The renders are attached below. I have since gotten the working file from him, and am still in the midst of figuring out how to host the file online (having tried Google Poly, SketchFab, Furioos (all are 3D online streaming websites)). I have since decided that since I have the working files, exporting it in the right format for the digital exhibition would be of a less worry later. I should focus on how the submissions will proceed first; the online mockup of the exhibition space can be figured out later when more details from the agency running the show come in. I also went ahead and did an architectural flythrough video of the render just in case the 3D files really dont work! WOOOO 210

Y3S2 – LASALLE COLLEGE OF THE ARTS WEEK 15 – Models: 3D Printed Artefacts The 3D printed models that Daryl has helped with in rendering, to which was sent for 3D printing after, has came back with good results as well. (Refer to the pictures below). What was left of it was the assembling of the Underwater City modules (which was a nifty job for me as I am not good with intricate parts) but managed to accomplish anyway. These will hopefully be useful should a grad show eventually manifest in any forms. Fingers crossed, I really hope these get to see the light of day some day! WOOOO 211

CREATIVE PROCESS JOURNAL WEEK 15 – (CB!) Macbook Crash In an attempt to figure out how to present the showcase digitally, I went ahead and installed 3D rendering and mockup programmes on my own macbook, which led to an accumulation in disk cache leading to lower performance on the laptop: I couldn’t seem to remove them in the drives, and hence went to factory reset my machine. Unfortunately my macOS failed to install properly due to a software error, and I had to go on the Apple support online page to seek for help. What the facilitator and I tried didn’t work and after 90minutes, I had to send the machine to the service center the following day. Blessed is that I had backed up a large portion of my data prior, and have a friend who could loan me his machine to work on while my laptop was being serviced. It was unprecedented, but I have since told myself to never reset my machine when deadlines are looming, especially now during the CB when I have to make the emergency travel out. 212

Y3S2 – LASALLE COLLEGE OF THE ARTS WEEK 15 – The State of the Nation While travelling out to get my laptop fixed, it worries me that the state of the nation (and the world) is in an extreme state of turmoil now. Things are uncertain, and basic functionalities and getgoes have all been affected. I have been at home prior the CB, and honeestly I am secretly thankful for having a break from staying home when I was ‘forced’ to travel out to the service center to get the laptop fixed. However, it was now that I realised that maybe the graduation show not happening for now is for its best: the general well-being of people and the nation should come first in these trying times. It would be more than selfish to endanger someone else should we hold a show of any measure; I don’t think we can ever forgive ourselves should that happen. But seeing how the state of the nation has quieten down, the pace of life at home and with work has halted.. it does speak of some much required peace, especially after how tumultuous 2020 has begun (and seems to be dwindling in a never- ending route to chaos.) 213

CREATIVE PROCESS JOURNAL WEEK 15 – Taking Time/Things to Myself As I write this, I am closing the CPJ up as I am near completion w.r.t the things that I require for submission, including the making of the Viva Voce video (which was a culminate of all the reports that were done prior) as well as all the files that are required in the assessment briefing. I have since been slowing down on the working pace and taking time to get other parts of my life in order, like spending more time with family, exercising (god I have put on so much weight this sem!) and cleaning up my own room because the messiness was just too unbearable and negative a space to work in. I am thankful that I have these long spreads of time to myself, but such doesn’t mean I stop working. I have since been signing up for digital collaborative design projects on the internet to use my time more wisely, and even considering taking up additional course via Singapore’s SkillsFutures programme. I have also been sending out (albeit seemingly meek) attempts of looking for a job, or an internship, even. Peace out, but I really hope things don’t get any worse as they already are. 214

Y3S2 – LASALLE COLLEGE OF THE ARTS STATE OF ROOM 215 ALSO, PEACE OUT.
