CAMPUS OPPORTUNITIES CENTRAL REGION

WELCOME! Thank you for considering becoming a campus staff with InterVarsity! 18 yearsago my campus staff sat across from me in a booth at our student union and askedme to pray about coming on staff. All I knew then was that I loved Jesus, that Heloved my campus, and that being a student leader with my chapter was the best \"job\" (aka. unpaid internship!) I'd ever had. Nearly two decades later I still find myself falling more deeply in love with our Lord alongside some of the most inspiring missionaries and dearest friends I know, all the while experiencing the gift of deeply meaningful work in what still is the best job I've ever had!Whether you are on your journey of vocational discovery seeking your first job or your third, we are honored to join you as active participants and champions foryou in this adventure. We pray that many of you will find your heart beating a little harder and your missional imagination stoked as you learn about God's movement on the campuses of the Central Region. It is a place where people areprofoundly transformed by the gospel and sent into a lifetime of fruitful Kingdom service. It is a dynamic training ground for missionaries and a joyful crucible forself-, skill-, and soul-development. We are expectantly searching and praying for faithful men and women who will call this mission field their own, perhaps forjust one student generation, perhaps for many. We pray that many of you will be these sought-after fellow laborers, but regardless of the adventure you embark upon, we are confident that God will be guiding you well for His Name's sake as together we seek His Kingdom. MINISTRY PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT The development of a ministry partnership team, including raising financialsupport, is an essential responsibility for CIs and CSMs. Campus Volunteers may also raise financial support for ministry expenses and conference scholarships. We refer to this process as Ministry Partnership Development (MPD). Philosophy and Approach MPD is Biblical. Jesus, Paul, and many other \"full-time ministers\" of the gospel were funded and encouraged by a partnership team. MPD is mutual ministry. We bless our partners with an opportunity to invest their time, talent, and treasure. We in turn are blessed by their generosity, love, and prayers. MPD is relational. We are not out to sell candy bars or guilt-trip people into giving us money. We engage them as partners and friends. MPD is vision-driven. We invite partners to support our ministry because of our vision for the campus, not just because we need a salary. MPD is spiritual formation. We find ourselves changed as we learn dependence on God, experience interdependence with others, and reframe our view of money and security. The Relational MPD Process Identify: Determine who could become your partners in ministry-- make a list of everyone that you already know Engage: Create interest in the ministry with an introductory letter Ask: Invite individuals/churches to partner by sharing vision, generally in a face-to-face appointment Follow Up: Bring closure to an ask and help partner begin giving, often with monthly gifts Thank and Report: Express gratitude and share the impact of the ministry with partners Training and Materials We equip you for MPD. InterVarsity provides extensive training and coaching for campus staff. Paid staff will attend two overnight MPD trainings in late spring and summer and will receive ongoing coaching and encouragement from an MPD supervisor. We provide MPD materials. InterVarsity provides professionally designed ministry brochures and templates to assist you in your MPD. These materials demonstrate to partners that InterVarsity is a respected, credible organization that they can trust with their money.

THE MYTHS OF MPD One barrier that keeps potential staff candidates from joining staff or evenapplying is MPD. The idea of raising money as part of the job is unappealing andcan be scary. There are a number of myths about MPD that need to be debunked so we can have a healthy view of developing partners in our ministry. Myth: MPD is just another way of saying that I’m asking people for money. Truth: MPD is fundamentally different from merely asking people for money. We are not just inviting people to send us a check so we can go do ministry. Instead, we are inviting them to engage actively in the ministry that we’re doing on campus. Our ministry partners are co-laborers with us, not just check writers. Myth: I don’t know enough people to do MPD well. Truth: You know more people than you think. There are dozens, if not hundreds of people you know from church, family, social networks, and beyond who would love to partner with you. You may not know who they are yet but they are out there. You can learn how to find them and invite them to partner with you. Myth: MPD is too hard. Truth: MPD is hard but it isn’t impossible. Staff have been doing MPD with InterVarsity for decades. Those staff will tell you that MPD isn’t easy but it is possible. We provide you with the coaching, the training, and the materials you need to get started. Ultimately, God is the one who is our provider and He will provide. \"Fundraising is, first and foremost, a form of ministry. It is a way of announcing our vision and inviting other people into our mission....As a form aministry, fundraising is as spiritual as giving a sermon, entering a time of prayer, visiting the sick, or feeding the hungry....To raise funds is to offer people the chance to invest what they have in the work of God.\" - Henri Nouwen

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS1. What does a typical InterVarsity workday consist of? There is no typical day! In campus ministry, every day looks different. But generally, you will be doing a combination of the Visionary Guide, Structural Architect, and Missional Developer roles. Besides actual campus ministry (e.g. evangelism, discipleship, leadership development), you may also engage in admin/prep time, MPD, team meetings and conferences, spiritual formation, and personal/professional development.2. How do I know if I am called to InterVarsity? Two main questions to ask yourself: 1) Am I drawn to ministry with college students? 2) Do I love the university? InterVarsity’s calling is to the university; if you can say yes to these two questions, it is worth pursuing a campus staff position with InterVarsity.3. If I am hired, how will placement be determined? Placement is generally a mutual process between the staff candidate and InterVarsity. For Campus Volunteers, your placement will be in a location near your job. For CIs, the priority is where you can receive the best development and training. For CSMs, the priority is a combination of regional needs and \"best fit\" scenarios for your giftings. We will take your preferences into account, but where there is compelling reason, we may offer you a placement in a different geographic location. In such cases, we will generally arrange an on-site campus visit to aid in your personal discernment process.4. How does supervision work in InterVarsity? Based on your geographic assignment, you will be assigned a supervisor who is an experienced campus staff or staff director. Supervisors will serve you in several different capacities: trainer, ministry coach, shepherd, mentor, and administrative manager.5. I am considering other career options, grad school, and/or seminary. Whyshould I choose InterVarsity campus staff first? Although some people will find a lifelong career with InterVarsity, many will eventually be called by God to other career paths. Many can attest that the skills and networks you develop in InterVarsity prepare you well for grad school and other opportunities--so you can think of InterVarsity as a developmental investment for your future, wherever God may lead you!6. How do ministry partners give to my ministry? Who handles the money? As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, InterVarsity handles all the financial transactions-- donations, payroll, expenses--from our national headquarters in Madison, WI. Ministry partners can mail a check to InterVarsity headquarters or give electronically via our secure online system. InterVarsity then issues a tax-deductible receipt to them.

7. If I am a CI/CSM, what kind of salary can I expect? Your target salary is set by your supervisor according to a standard scale. As a reference, the full-time CSM position starting salary is roughly equivalent to a school-teacher’s starting salary. You will generally begin receiving a partial monthly salary when you have 50% of your MPD budget pledged. That amount increases proportionally as your MPD pledges increase. (Note: We typically operate on pledges instead of actual gifts received. We recognize that giving will fluctuate from month to month because of one- time or annual gifts.)8. What benefits and perks are available with InterVarsity? All paid staff are eligible for retirement benefits and a flex spending account. Full-time staff are eligible for health benefits, including medical, dental and vision. Full benefits information is available upon request from a Staff Director. Additional perks include seminary education discounts and InterVarsity Press discounts.9. Is InterVarsity employment something you can do long-term? Yes! If God calls you to stay with InterVarsity, there will be opportunities for advancement to managerial or specialist positions. In addition, your target salary will grow commensurate with your skills and experience. Not only will these new responsibilities challenge your growth and development, but the corresponding higher salary levels make it possible to support a family. As you faithfully continue to engage in MPD, your financial support also increases with time, making these larger budgets feasible.STAFF DIRECTOR CONTACT INFOCentral Regional Director: Kathy Haug [email protected] Iowa Area Director: Amy Becker [email protected] Area Director: Tim Lin [email protected] Area Director: Will Chu [email protected] Area Director: Stacy Rafferty [email protected] www.ivcentral.orgwww.intervarsity.org
