Training the Team: Being able to sit down with the manager of a team is something many social media workers want for their club, here at Bjerkreim we are lucky that the manager helps and manages the social media himself. Defining what lower league clubs do, many jobs for one man, people helping in different areas… So the question we wanted answering this month; Give us an insight into what happens at training… Training is always going to be different, I personally spend my weekends planning the following weeks training, looking at my notes from previous weeks, previous sessions and previous drills, some drills do not go well with the players, some do not suit our styles so they get black marked as such. Drills I do not feel we should use often as they were maybe not as beneficial as I wanted or hoped. Every session starts with a general warm up, with light jogging, dynamic stretching before doing some quick sprinting drills mixed in with jogging. The warm up ends with a ladder set up for players to run sideways over before accelerating forward over 5 steps before a 5 meter sprint over the line. This drill gets the blood pumping ready for the players to train. The following drills are some examples just to go through what a normal session would be like. I like to get the lads working with the ball close to their feet, some short passing but quick and drilled so with them forming a circle we play a clockwise passing game which involves narrow triangles. Using the circle to the side, I focus on play from 1786453423128 and so on, keeping the ball moving quickly to work on foot work as well as getting them warmed up with the ball at their feet. Following this we will look at drills depending on a recent game or previous training sessions, for example this week we have worked on passing and making the moves on the edge of the area, 12 passing, with players lined up along the box and the attacking player running across the pitch playing a 12 ball with each person before reaching a tighter angle to release a shot. All about working on 1: The footwork whist running at pace and linking with another player. 2: The layoff ball from the second man, helping him work on that cushioned pass back that could create a goal scoring chance in a game. We will then work on set piece structure, how we will set up in games, defending and attacking. Looking for gaps, players to utilize as well as looking at where we are weak and improving that for future matches. All training sessions will include numerous drills to improve footballing skills before we end a session with a mini match, normally under my instructions throughout, looking for issues we could look at fixing before match days but the most important thing about these matches is that it gives players time together. Players form links in games and training and mini matches to end the sessions I am finding is a great way to 1: see the links be formed. 2: See how drills we have been doing are working, the quick 12 passing as an example. 3
The Manager’s May Review... Bjerkreim 2 2 Tonstad. 2nd May. The Month started with the final of the three home games to start the season and it was a game that we left disappointed. Leading the game 20, we managed to throw the lead away, with poor defending and fitness being the main issues. Falling deeper and deeper we invited them on to us and throughout the second half it was only a matter of time before they got the goals which finally came for Tonstad in the 53rd and the 83rd minutes. This was a game which showed me just how much fitness was a worrying factor of the early stages of the season. Something we as a team needed to build on. Moster 3 0 Bjerkreim. 7th May. The game I never want to see again, Moster was an away trip to forget. As a manager one of the main things I always demand from my team is determination and it was disappointing to leave the game thinking that was not given. We were second to every ball and throughout the game we looked like a team who were just wanting to leave the pitch. We travelled up with a small squad and we were missing many from the first team which did not help the original plans but it did give players a chance to make a claim for future matches. We also went down to 10 men during the game with Kim Rune Kastet picking up two yellows, two of Mosters goals coming after the incident with one of them from the resulting free kick. Undheim 4 1 Bjerkreim. 12th May. This match could take up a magazine on its own… A match where I must watch what I give my report on. With us taking the lead with Andreas Slettebø getting to a rebound from a set piece, within one minute of this goal, Undheim found themselves with a chance due to a mistake in defence. This was collected by our goalkeeper but through a sliding tackle from Undheim he spilled the ball, surely a free kick? But no and with the match continuing, Undheim tucked the ball into an empty net. Not long after this we had a chance to get back into the lead, with a ball over the top, we were in on goal. 1v1 and Kjell Arve Refsland is brought down, a tackle from behind without playing the ball, this was when we were all thinking, including the opposition bench, that it’s now a red card for his defender but no, the referee waves playon to the shock of the whole ground. Moving into the second half of the game our keeper was still carrying a knock and after the second goal we had to take him off with our sub striker Per going in goal. We then had Torbjørn Solberg receive a red card due to a sliding tackle, another questionable decision but one we had to handle. 4
With the game ending 41, it was a result that was tough to take. Now I will add that Undheim played some great football but I think if they lost a man early on for the 1v1 incident, I think we would have gone on to dominate the game and the score could have ended as 41 to Bjerkreim. Riska2 2 0 Bjerkreim. 18th May After two defeats, many would see us with our heads down, a team who can be rolled over but that was not the case, we went into the game against Riska 2 with belief. I wanted the players to believe in themselves, trust in the methods and keep playing football. Now first views show a 20 defeat but coming up against a very good Riska team, we controlled large periods without being under much pressure, missing the final ball on many occasions, our build up play was solid and we were settling into the game. A penalty in the 81st minute was the turning point, no question about it, a coming together which could have gone either way so it was now time for Darren Ross to make himself a hero and he did!! Saving the penalty but only for the referee to pull it back, claiming he came off his line. Nothing we could do on this and on second attempt they scored the goal. The hard work away from home resulting in no points but a lot of positives to take forward to the next match. Bjerkreim 0 v 6 Våganes. 30th May Two steps back and one step forward was complete when we ended the month with the worst defeat of the season. Falling to a 60 drumming to Våganes, a defeat that left me apologising to the fans who came out to watch the game in the worst conditions of the year as well as the fans around the world who were awaiting the result, breaking the news of a 60 defeat was something I do not wish to do again. We conceded a very early goal which put us on the back foot, a cross in which took a flick into the back of the net. Våganes tried throughout the game to put Darren in goal under pressure and it was a plan that worked well resulting in many goal scoring chances. We as a team were missing a yard during the game from minute one to ninety. Finding ourselves second to everything and when we did have possession, it was a struggle to get composed. Something which was disappointing due to the time we had spent on passing and structure to get time to compose ourselves before the next pass. Losing is always tough but to lose in the manner we did was very upsetting, but helps me learn a lot about the club and what we need to focus and develop on to take the club forward in the future years to come. The versatile andadaptable Scottish shot stopper arrives with an impressive footballing CV thatincludes Scottish Premiership side Inverness Caledonian Thistle and StJohnstone. He made his debut against Helleland when he came on as asubstitute, but not in goal - he was brought on as a defensive midfielder! Sincethen he has made the long awaited debut in goal when we traveled to Riska. ● Name:Darren Robert Ross ● Age:32 ● Position:GK (Capable of playing anywhere along the back 4 and also CM most favourably the Claude Makelele Role) ● Birth place:Aberdeen (Brought up in Pitlochry all my life) ● Previous Clubs:Bankfoot JFC, Dundee University AFC, Kelso AFC, St Johnstone, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Vale of Atholl, Star of Atholl, Breadalbane AFC, Vaulen B, Ganddal IL. ● Favourite memory/incident from your playing career:Winning my first Amateur cup at McDiarmid Park when I was 13 and keeping a clean sheet VS a team that had put 19 goals past me in 2 meetings earlier that season. I was also scouted for St Johnstone that day as well. A close 2nd was being told by Alan Main (ex Dundee united and Scotland) that I was the most talented goalkeeper he had ever worked with and if I was 1ft taller I would be playing in a 1st team squad at 16 easily. ● What do you hope to achieve with Bjerkreim IL:Promotion (as a minimum) ● Club supported as a child:Dundee United & Tottenham Hotspur ● Favourite player as a child:Jorge Campos (Mexico) or Zinedine Zidane (France) ● Player you would love to meet or play against and why:I would love to meet Diego Maradona simply because he is a legend of the game and must be great to share a beer with ;).
