First Month In Pictures... 2
Bjerkreim Idrettslag Bjerkreim IL is a club that covers not just football but also athletics, cross country skiing, gymnastics and handball. Idrettslag literally means ‘sports teams’. The club is actually owned by its members across all sports, and the head of the whole club is Kari Hilde Hellestø. The football section of the club comprises of the Men's Senior side, which Paul Wandless is the manager of, and then with a massive youth programme that contains 8 different aged teams for boys and another 8 for girls. There is now no longer any reserve side or other adult team. Leader of the football section is Asgeir Osland and next month we’ll have an interview with him on his role and what he does at the club. We had a brief chat and here is a snippet from the interview where he describes the youth set up and the club's history: The youth system is very important for the club and is seen as one of its main purposes. It follows that as Bjerkreim’s youth players grow older and have their own children, they then bring them to the club to train their sons and daughters, and so repeating the cycle. The club's best period was around 1520 years ago when they played in League 3 (4 from the top) but now we are unfortunately in League 6 and the worst patch was probably the last three seasons with hardly any points. Vikeså (pronounced Vikesaw), the village where Bjerkreim IL are based is small with just around 1000 inhabitants, and a surrounding population of around 2500. 3
The Manager’s April Review... Bjerkreim 1 1 Lye. 4th April. This was a game I was looking forward to, my first competitive game as Bjerkreim IL manager, we had only been together as a team for 2 weeks so I knew it was going to be tough but I felt that the players have taken to my ideas well, we wanted to play how we did against Gjesdal FK and be very solid defensively and make sure we kept the ball down as much as we can. The game started and I noticed from the start we had some issues, some players were not controlling the game how I had hoped and it could not continue like that, early into the game I decided to make a tactical change as we went 10 down before 20 minutes had been played. After the change we started to come into the game and we started to control more and more and we ended up getting back into the game with a great set piece goal from Ole Harald Sandstøl, a goal we tried to recreate in the last match to little success. The final 20 minutes of this game were one I want to forget, the team did not have the legs anymore and we were holding on, the focus and calm attitude on the ball was lost and we were playing long balls and inviting them back on to us. We did hold on and got away with a 11 draw which after only a two week pre season was a positive. The disappointing note from the game was an injury to Roger Brattebø who has come in since as my assistant. Bjerkreim 1 1 Hellaland. 18th April. This was going to be an interesting game. Before the match in the training sessions, the players had said that we can not lose this game, it was a local derby, to spice things up, Helleland had played two league games scoring 10 goals so we knew it was going to be a tough. I wanted to continue to implement my ideas of being a side who played football, getting the ball down and trying to work through teams. I was delighted with the change compared to the game against Lye with the fitness improvements clear to see. Helleland started as a team who expected to roll us over but very quickly they struggled to get control of the game and we started to play some nice passing with the link up play starting to take effect, an injury to Steffen Slettebø during the game hit the team hard and you could see it was affecting them for a period during the game. Helleland went on to take a 10 lead which was upsetting to see as they had not had a shot on target before that which I could recall. We continued to play our game and managed to get a goal back to make it 11 and from then on the game went to an end to end game but with little end product. A 11 draw against a team who started with 10 goals in two games is something to take pride from and we move on from there. Paul Wandless 4
Meet The Player… Name? Ole Harald Sandstøl Age? 24 Position? CM Birth place? Bjerkreim Previous Clubs? Bjerkreim IL and NyKrohnborg IL Favourite memory from your playing career? Favourite memory is when we reached the quarter final with our youth team in the multinational cup called DanaCup. We went on a brilliant undefeated run that year where we had some great teamplay and team cohesion before we sadly lost on penalties to a german team that would eventually go on to play in the final. Club supported as a child? Manchester United Favourite player as a child? Paul Scholes Player you would love to meet or play against? Eric Cantona What do you hope to achieve with Bjerkreim IL? My hopes would be to one day experience a promotion. Other than that my more immediate goal is to be our topscorer this year! Bjerkreim have had an undefeated start to the season this must give the squad a lot of confidence for the season ahead? Most certainly, defensively we have been solid. When we now can get our fitness and offensive work sorted i think we will be golden. The team did not have a lot of pre season training do you feel as you learn the new manager's tactics and fitness improves that there is more to come in future matches? Paul has brought a lot of enthusiasm and good ideas and we have been improving steadily under his reign. As we continue forward i believe this trend will keep on continuing Your performances of controlling the midfield and your goal against Lye have drawn comparisons with Paul Scholes, is this a playing style you try to copy or is there another midfield great you hope to play like? Haha, comparisons to Scholes is certainly a loooong stretch, but he had a playing style that i really do love. His vision and ability to dictate games was always a pleasure to watch. Your twin brother is Jan Martin Sandstøl who is our solid centre back, this must be useful on the pitch and a bit confusing for the opposition at times?? We have been playing together for many years now so it helps in the sense that we know our strengths, weaknesses and movements on/off the ball. When it comes to the opposition there probably have been times where players have wondered if our team has a player with super stamina, haha. 5
Assistant Manager's Report….. The season so far has gone in a very positive direction. I have both been at the team as a player and as an assistant. At the beginning even before Paul came along, the guys wanted to prove that we didn't belong in such a low division. A new coach came in as a replacement for last years coach. After some time, him and Paul made the decision to make Paul the head coach as he had more time. With Paul's help you can already see a good change in the spirit of the team, they are all working very hard to be a better team, and I can see a great difference now rather than just a couple of months ago. We have been working a lot on both fitness and formation and the guys are really improving. So i'm both excited and really look forward to the time to come! And i'm confident that this will be a very good season for Bjerkreim IL. Roger Brattebø April in Division 6 6
